War Services of the Officers of the Tioyal Engineers. 204c
59 Lt. Colonel Lennox landed in the Crimea on 30th Sept. 1854, and served uninter¬
ruptedly with the army there until it re-embarked in June 185G ; was present at the battle
of Inkerman, attack and capture of the Rifle Pits on 20th Nov. 1854 (Victoria Cross), siege
and fall of Sebastopol (Medal and two Clasps, Sardinian and Turkish Medals, and 5th
Class of the Medjidie). Served in the Indian campaign of 1857-58 ; was present at the
action of Khujwa; commanded the Engineer Brigade at the relief of Lucknow by Lord
Clyde (mentioned in Lord Clyde’s despatch, and thanked by the Governor General in
Council), and against the Gwalior Contingent ending in its defeat at the battle of Cawn-
pore on 6th Dec.; present at the action of Khodagunj ; served at the siege of Lucknow
in March 1858 (mentioned in Chief Engineer’s report, and received Brevet of Major);
commanded the Engineers at the attack on Fort Rooya, and at the action of Allcegunj;
present at the capture of Bareilly, and at the action of Doundeakera; commanded the
Engineers at the attack of Fort Oomreeab ; present at the affair of Burjeedia, the capture
of Fort Musjeedia, and the affair on the river Raptee near Bankee 31st Dec. 1858 (four
times mentioned in despatches, Medal and two Clasps, and Brevet of Lt.Colonel).
60 Major Leahy joined the Army of the East at Varna, and served throughout the cam¬
paign of 1854-55, latterly as D.A.Q.M.G. to the Royal Engineers (Medal and three Clasps,
Sardinian and Turkish Medals, and 5th Class of the Medjidie).
62 Major Stuart served during the operations of 1856-58 at Canton ; was present at
the capture and demolition of French Folly Fort and at the formation of defensive posi¬
tion at the Factories; led the French Storming Party at the assault of Canton, and was
thanked by the French Naval Commander in Chief.
63 Major Cowell embarked on board tho Baltic Fleet with a detachment of Royal
Sappers and Miners in Feb. 1854; in July was appointed Aide de Camp to Brigadier
General Harry Jones, and served as such at the operations against Bomarsund (Baltic
Medal); accompanied General Jones as Aide de Camp to the Crimea in Jan. 1855, and
continued with him until his return to England (Medal with Clasp for Sebastopol, Knight
of the Legion of Honor, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
64 Lt.Colonel Graham served throughout the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, including
the battles of Alma and Inkerman, and served in the trenches throughout the siege of
Sebastopol—twice wounded. Led a ladder party to the assault of the Redan on the 18th
June 1855 (Victoria Cross), and was on duty in the trenches at the final assault of the
8th September. Employed in the destruction of the docks of Sebastopol (Medal with
three Clasps, Knight of the Legion of Honor, 5th Class of the Medjidie, Turkish Medal,
and Brevet of Major). Served throughout the campaign of 1860 in North China, in¬
cluding the assault of Tangku and the Taku Forts, and surrender of Pekin—wounded
with jingall ball (Medal with two Clasps and Brevet of Lt.Colonel).
65 Captain Philips served in the Crimea from Sept. 1854 to Feb. 1855 (Medal and Clasps
6th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
66 Captain Martin served at the siege of Sebastopol from Sept. 1854 to Feb. 1855
(Medal and Clasp, Knight of the Legion of Honor, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish
Medal).
67 Captain Pratt served during the operations crossing the Danube in July 1854, and re¬
ceived theTurkish Gold Medal for that campaign. Servedduring the Crimean campaign until
the end of May 1855 (Medal and Clasp, Sardinian and Turkish Medals, and 5th Class of
the Medjidie).
68 Captain Drake served at the siege of Sebastopol from Nov. 1854 to May 1855 (Medal
and Clasp, Knight of the Legion of Honor, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
69 Captain James served at the siege of Sebastopol from Feb. 1855 until taken prisoner
of war on 2nd July (Medal and Clasp, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal). Was
attached to the Turco-Russian Boundary Commissions in Bessarabia and Asia in 1856-57.
69t Captain Beaumont served with the local rank of Captain in the Turkish Contingent
Engineers in 1855-56 (Turkish Medal). Served on the staff of the Royal Engineers
during the Indian Mutiny—Medal with one Clasp for Lucknow.
70 Major Gordon served in the trenches before Sebastopol from Dec. 1854 to the close of
thesiege (wounded on 6th June 1855). Accompanied the column underSir John Campbell
at the attack of the Redan on the 18th June; accompanied the Company of Sappers attached
to the expedition to Kinbourn, and present at the surrender of that fort. Was employed in
the demolition of the docks of Sebastopol; and subsequently employed on the Turco-
Russian Boundary Commissions in Bessarabia and Asia in 1856-57 (Medal and Clasp,
Knight of the Legion of Honor, and Turkish Medal). Served in the operations against
the Taepings in the vicinity of Shanghae in 1862.
71 Captain Stokes served at the siege of Sebastopol from Sept. 1854 to March 1856
(Medal and Clasp, and Turkish Medal).
72 Major Edwards served in the Crimea from 14th Sept. 1855, and was employed
in the demolition of the Docks of Sebastopol, and has received the Crimean and Turkish
Medals. Served in India in 1857-59, and commanded a Company of the Royal Engineers
throughout the campaign in Central India under Sir Hugh Rose, was present at the siege
and storming of Chandairee, siege and storming of Jhansi, actions of the Betwah, Koonch,
and Goolowlee, capture of Calpee, action before and capture of Gwalior, and capture of Tantia
Topee (several times mentioned in despatches, Medal and Clasp, and Brevet of Major).
73 Captain Donnelly served throughout the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, including the
battles in the Crimea, siege and fall of Sebastopol (Medal and Clasps, Knight of the
Legion of Honor, and Turkish Medal)
74 Captain Scott served at the siege of Sebastopol in June 1855 (Medal and Clasp, and
Turkish Medal).
