1224 IVar Services of Retired Majors.
(i4 Major Gmbbe served with the 43rd Lt. Inf. in the Peninsula during the latter part of 1812,
and was in action on tbe 16th Nov. on retreat from Burgos. Was also at New Orleans.
65 Major Halliday served with the 82nd Regt. at the siege and fall of Sebastopol from 2nd
Sept. 1855 (Medal and Clasp). Served in the N. W. Provinces in suppressing tbe Indian
Mutiny in 1858 and was present at the actions of Khankur, siege of the Jail and subsequent
operations at Shahjehanpore (Brevet of Major and Medal).
66 Major Wm. Henry Hare accompanied the expedition under Sir David Baird to Corunna,
and was present throughout the retreat, and at the battle of Corunna. In Aug. 1809 embarked
with the expedition to Walcheren, and was at the siege and capture of Flushing. Served in the
Peninsular campaigns of 1811, 12, 13, and 14 ; and finally at the battle of Waterloo and capture
of Cambray.
67 Major Herbert served with the 39th Regt. at the action of Maharajporo on the 29th Dec.
1843 (slightly wounded).
68 Major j. M. Hill served in the Kaflir war of 1846-17 (Medal). Served in the Crimea at
the battle of Inkerman and siege of Sebastopol (Medal and two Clasps), after which as Major
in the Turkish Contingent and commanded the Garrison Artillery at Kertch and Yenikali (4th
Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
69 Major Hinchhff served in 1857 with the 64lh Regt. in Persia (Medal), and in India
(Medal).
79 Major J. M. Home served the campaign of 1814 in Upper Canada with the 104th Regt.
71 Major Hopkins served with the 43rd Light Infantry during the campaign in Denmark in
1807, including the siege and surrender of Copenhagen, and battle of Kioge. In 1808 landed at
Corunna with Sir David Baird’s expedition, and joining the army of Sir John Moore was in the
various operations until the retreat. In 1809, landed in Portugal with the Light Division, and
was at the defending of the passage of the Tagus at Almaraz ; in 1810 was engaged in several
affairs between Almeida and Ciudad Rodrigo, action of the Coa (severely wounded), battle of
Busaco, and various skirmishes; in 1811 engaged at Pombal, Redinha, Condcdxa, Miranda de
Coorg, Sabugal, and battle of Fuentes d’Onor; in 1812, was present during both the sieges and
storming of Ciudad Rodrigo and Badajoz, commanding a Company at the assault of the breaches
of each ; present at the reduction of the forts of Salamanca, action at Castrajon, battle of Sala¬
manca, and surrender of the Retire in Madrid; in 1813, action of San Millan, battle of Vittoria,
action with the enemy’s rearguard on entering the Pyrenees, operations therein, action at the
bridge of Yanzi, and attack of the heights of Santa Barbara ; present also at the storm and
capture of Saint Sebastian. Served in the campaign of 1815 and was at the capture of Paris.
Has the War Medal with seven Clasps, and was twice severely wounded.
71+ Major Hume served in the Sutlej campaign in 1846 and was twice wounded, once
dangerously through the right lung at the battle of Sobraon (Medal). Commanded the 1st
European Bengal Fusiliers in suppression of tbe Indian Mutiny, including the Trans-Goomtee
operations under Outram, storm and capture of Lucknow, and subsequent operations in Oude
(Medal with Clasp, Brevet of Major).
72 Major Hutton served with the 4th Light Dragoons. Served the Eastern campaign of 1854,
including the battles of Alma and Balaklava (severely wounded in both thighs), and siege of
Sebastopol (Medal and Clasps, and Turkish Medal).
'73 Major R. Inglis served with the 18th Royal Irish in the Crimea in 1854-55, including the
siege and fall of Sebastopol, assault and capture of the Cemetery on tbe 18th June (Medal and
Clasp, Brevet of Major, and Turkish Medal).
74 Major W. Inglis served in the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, including the battles of Bala¬
klava and Inkerman, and siege of Sebastopol, for which he obtained Brevet rank as Major (Medal
and Clasps, and Turkish Medal).
75 Colonel Jacks served the campaign in Naples under Sir James Craig in 1805, and that in
Sicily and Calabria under Sir John Stuart in 1806; in 1809 he was at the taking of the islands
of Isdua and Procida in the Bay of Naples. Subsequently he served on the Eastern Coast of
Spain, and was present at the actions of Alcoy, Biar, Castalla, Villafranca, and various other
affairs. In 1814 he was at the capture of Genoa. In 1835 he raised the 2nd Lancers of the
British Legion under Sir De Lacy Evans, and was present in tbe various actions and other
desultory operations of the Legion in Spain. For his services there he has received from the
Spanish Government three Crosses of the Military Order of St. Ferdinand (one conferred on
the field of battle), and the Commandership of Isabel the Catholic ; also the rank ot Colonel in
the Spanish Army.
76 Major Jackson served in the Sutlej campaign in 1846 with the 16th Lancers, and was
present at the affair of Buddiwal, and in the actions of Aliwal and Sobraon (Medal and Clasp).
76t Major Jary served with the 12th Lancers in the Kaffir war of 1851-3 (Medal). Also in
the Crimea from 9th May 1855, including the siege of Sebastopol (Medal and Clasp, and Turkish
Medal).
77 Major Judge accompanied the 27th Regt. on tbe expedition to Hanover in 1805. Joined
the army in Sicily in 1806, and was employed with it, in a Grenadier battalion, during its various
operations, in 1810. Sailed with the force for Naples, and was present at the capture of Ischia
and Procida in 1809. Returned to Sicily, and appointed Deputy Assistant Quarter Master
General; employed against the French army in 1811. Served with that department during
1812 and 13 at the battle of Castalla, twice in active siege before Tarragona, in the affair at Villa
Franca, and the pass of Balaguer. Rejoined the 27th Regiment, and sailed from Bourdcaux for
Canada; present at the battle of Plattsburg, and the severely-contested passage of the Saranac.
