481 War Services of the Captains.
42 Captain Crookshank, when proceeding to Van Diemen’s Land in charge of a convict
guard, received several severe wounds by the accidental discharge of a pistol, in an attempt
made by the prisoners to surprise the guard.
43 Captain Curtis served at Walcheren in 1809, and was present at the attack of Ter Vere
and siege of Flushing.
44 Captain Davern served with the 88th at the attack on Buenos Ayres, 5th July 1807. At
the defence of Cadiz in 1809 and 10; subsequent campaigns in the Peninsula, including the pur¬
suit of the French from the Lines of Torres Vedras, action at Sabugal, battle of Fuemes d’Onor,
second siege of Badajoz, action at El Bodon, siege and capture of Ciudad Rodrigo, third siege
and capture of Badajoz (wounded at the assault), battles of Salamanca, Vittoria, Pampeluna, and
the Pyrenees; passage of the Bidassoa, battles of Nivelle, Nive, and Orthes (wounded) ; actions at
Vie Bigorre, Tar’oes, and Hasparen, battle ot Toulouse, and various other minor affairs. Served
afterwards in the American war and was present in the action in Plattsburg. He has received
the War Medal with ten Clasps.
45 Captain Henry John Davies served with the 32nd Regt. at the 2nd siege operations
before Mooltan, including the attack on the suburbs on the 27th Dec. 1848, storm and capture
of the city, and surrender of the fortress. Also present at the surrender of the fort and
garrison of Cheniote, and at the battle of Goojerat (Medal and Clasps).
46 Captain Alfred Davis was present with a squadron of the 22nd Light Dragoons at the
battle of Maheidpore, 21st Dec. 1817 ; and at the taking of Talneir in 1818.
47 Captain Joseph Douglas served as 2nd Lieut. R. Marines on board H. M. S. Hindostan in
the North Sea, off Texel, in 1804, watching the movements of the Dutch Fleet. On 4th June
1805 was employed in the boats of the Loire cutting out the boats of the Confiance, 490 tons,
off Muros Bay, coast of Spain, and storming two batteries under Sir James Yeo (Medal). On
24th Nov. 1805 on board the Loire during the engagement with and capture, off Rochfort, of
the Fxench 44 gun frigate Libre. In 1808 he was gazetted to an Ensigncy in the 32nd Foot,
and the following year served on the Walcheren expedition, siege of Flushing, and ascent of
the Scheldt. In Dec. 1810 promoted to Lieut, in the 45th, with which Regiment he served the
Peninsular campaigns of 1813 and 14, and was present at the battles of Nivelle, Nive, Orthes,
and Toulouse, at which last he was severely wounded in the right arm by a musket ball, when
carrying the King’s color: he has received the War Medal with four Clasps.
48 Captain John Dowman served with the 40th Regt. throughout the operations at Candahar
and in Affghanistan, iu 1841 and 42 (Medal). Served as Aide-de-camp to Major-General
Dennis in the action at Maharajpore on the 29th Dec. 1843 (Medal).
49 Captain Dresing was present at the storming of Kawiti’s Pah at Ruapekapeka, New
Zealand, on 11th Jan. 1846, after which he proceeded to the valley of the Hutt, and served
there during different operations.
50 Captain Duncan served with the expedition to Bremen in Germany in 1805. Also in
the American war, including the capture of Moose Island.
51 Captain Eaton served in the Peninsula, France, and Flanders with the Rifle Brigade, and
has received the War Medal with seven Clasps for Barrosa, Vittoria, Pyrenees, St. Sebastian,
Nivelie, Orthes, and Toulouse.
52 Captain Edwardes served in the Peninsula from Jan. 1813 to June 1814, and was present
at the battle of Vittoria, siege of San Sebastian, passage of the Bidassoa and of the Adour, and
investment of Bayonne : he has received the War Medal with four Clasps for Vittoria, San
Sebastian, Nivelle, and Nive. He served also the campaign of 1815, including the battle
of Waterloo.
53 Captain William Elliott served with the 2nd Life Guards in the Peninsula, France, and
Flanders, and was present at the battle of Vittoria, at Pampeluna, the Pyrenees, Toulouse,
Waterloo, and capture of Paris : he has received the War Medal with two Clasps for Vittoria
and Toulouse.
54 Captain Hercules Ellis served in the Peninsula with the 88th, from March 1809 to the end
of that war in 1814, including the first siege of Badajoz, and battles of Busaco, Fuentes d’Onor,
Vittoria, and the Pyrenees.
55 Captain Emerson served with the 35th at the taking of Santa Maura, storming of the
enemy’s outposts, and at the taking of the Ionian Islands.
56 Captain Enderby served with the 22nd Light Dragoons at Belgaum and Sholapore, in 1818;
and with the 16 th Lancers at Bhurtpore in 1825-6. In addition to the above he served three years
in the royal navy as midshipman, and was on board H.M.S. Defence at the battle of Trafalgar.
57 Captain Fairtlough served with the 55th on the China expedition (Medal), and was
present at Amoy, Chusan, Chinhae (including the night attack), Chapoo, Woosung, Shanghae,
and Chin Kiang Foo.
58 Captain Farmar served on the China expedition, and was present at the battle of Chuen-
pee, attack of the Anunghoy batteries, advance on Canton, capture of the heights of Canton,
capture of Colongso, second capture of Chusau, assault and capture of the citadel and city
of Chinhae, entry into Ningpo (Medal). Served with the Baltic expeditions in 1854 and 1855.
59 Captain Fayerman served with the Royal Marine Battalion in Egypt under Sir Ralph
Abercromby in 1801, and has received the Egyptian Gold Medal and the Silver War Medal
with one Clasp.
60 Captain T. B. V. FitzGerald was present at the bombardment of Odessa 22nd April 1854.
Served during the siege of Sebastopol in 1854-55, and was several times in action with the outer
defences (Medal and Clasp); commanded a Company in the R. battalion at the occupation of
