Depot Battalions.—War Services.
36 Major Hood was employed in the year 1846 as Secretary on a Special Public Mission to the Argentine
Republic to settle the difference on the part of the combined Powers of England and France, and General
Rosa, the Governor of Buenos Ayres. Served at the siege of Sebastopol in 1855 (wounded), and commanded
the ladder party of the Buffs at the assault of the Redan on the 8th Sept.—wounded (Medal and Clasp,
Brevet Major, and 5th Class of the Medjidie).
37 Major Yonge served with the Queen’s Royals throughout Lord Keane’s campaign in Affghanistan
and Beloochistan,"and was severely wounded at the storming of Ghuznee (Medal). He served also the
campaign in the Southern Mahratta country in 1844 (including the storm of the fortress of Punella), and
that of the Concan in 1845.
38 Major Manners served throughout the Burmese War of 1853-53, and was present with the 51st
Light Infantry on board the E. I. C. steam frigate Feroze at the attack and destruction of the enemy’s
batteries and stockades on the Rangoon River on the 11th April 1852 ; on the following day commanded
the skirmishers which covered the disembarkation and advance of the storming party at the capture of
the White House Redoubt; at the final assault and taking of Rangoon he commanded the Escort of
the Major General Commanding, and at the storm and capture of Rangoon (Medal). Was appointed
Brigade Major to the 1st Madras Brigade in Sept. 1852, and was present at the engagement on the
heights of Prome (Medal and Clasp).-
39 Major Elgee served with the 47th Regt. at the siege of Sebastopol in 1855 (Medal and Clasp, and
Brevet Major).
40 Major Skipwith served throughout the Eastern campaign of 1854-55 with the 41st Regt., including the
battles of Alma and Inkerman, siege and fall of Sebastopol, and repulse of the powerful sortie of 26th Oct.
(Medal and three Clasps, Brevet Major, Knight of the Legion of Honor, Sardinian Medal, and 6th Class of
the Medjidie).
41 Major King served with the 55th Regt. on the China expedition (Medal), at Amoy, Chusan, Chinhaa
(including repulse of night-attack), Chapoo, Woosung, Shanghae, and Chin Kiang Foo. Also the Eastern
campaign of 1854, including the battle of Alma and siege of Sebastopol (Medal and Clasps).
42 Major Drewe served with the 23rd Fusiliers the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, including the battles
of Alma and Inkerman, siege and fall of Sebastopol, attack of the Quarries, also attacks of the 18th June
and 8th Sept.—wounded and mentioned in Dispatches (Medal and three Clasps, Brevet Major, Knight
of the Legion of Honor, and Sardinian Medal).
43 Lt.Colonel Gordon served with the 93rd Highlanders the Eastern campaign of 1854 and up to 11th
July 1855, including the battles of Alma and Balaklava, expedition to the Sea of Azoff, capture of
Kertch and Yenikali, and siege of Sebastopol (Medal and Clasps, Brevet Lt.Colonel, and 5th Class of
the Medjidie). Served in the Indian campaign under Sir Colin Campbell from Sept. 1857 to April 1858,
including the relief of Lucknow, action at Cawnpore, and Anal capture of Lucknow; at the relief ot
Lucknow from 13th to 24th Nov. commanded the 53rd Regt., for which he was made a CB.; commanded
left wing 93rd Highlanders at the storming of the Begum’s Palace, and specially mentioned in despatches
as commanding a part of the 93rd in dislodging the enemy from their last position in Lucknow.
44 Major Elton served with the 55th Regt. the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, including the battle of
Inkerman, siege and fall of Sebastopol, Sortie of 26th Oct., attack on the Quarries (mentioned in
despatches), and assault of the Redan on the 8th Sept, (mentioned in despatches); was wounded in the
trenches on 10th Aug. (Medal and Clasps, Brevet Major, Victoria Cross, Knight of the Legion of
Honor, and 5th Class of the Medjidie).
45 Major Patrick Robertson served in the Cape Mounted Rifles during the Kaffir war of 1850-51
(Medal), was appointed Field Captain in command of the local force of “ Armstrong’s Horse;” in which
capacity he was engaged in many most successful operations against the enemy, including the affair
against Seyola’s tribe, April 16, 1851, where he captured 200 head of cattle, and had his horse killed
under him; and more particularly at the combined attack on the Amatoias June 28, 1851, where he
captured nearly 2000 head of cattle; repeatedly had the honor of receiving the highest commendation
in General Orders, and special mention in the despatches of Sir Harry Smith, then Governor and Com-
mander-in-Chief. Served throughout the Eastern campaign of 1854-55 with the 4th Regt., including the
battles in the Crimea, siege and fall of Sebastopol; was mentioned in the despatches in high terms by
Lord Ragian and by General Eyre, for the “ spirited manner ” in which, on the night of the 22nd Nov.
1854, and following morning, he twice repulsed the Russian attack upon an advanced position before
Sebastopol; served as Aide-de-Camp to Sir William Eyre since 17th April 1855, including the attack
and occupation of the Cemetery on 18th June (Medal and Clasps, Brevet Major, Knight of tire Legion
of Honor, and 5th Class of the Medjidie).
40 Major Hon. D. G. Finch served with the 68th Light Infantry throughout the Eastern campaign
of 1854-55, including the battles of Alma and Inkerman, siege and fall of Sebastopol (Medal and Clasps,
Brevet Major, and 5th Class of the Medjidie).
47 Major Appleyard served with the 80th in the Burmese war of 1852 (Medal), and was present at the
capture of Martaban, operations before Rangoon on the 12th, 13th, and 14th April, and capture of the Great
Dagon Pagoda with the storming party; also at the capture of Prome. Served the Eastern campaign of
1854-55 with the Royal Fusiliers, and was present at the battles of Alma (wounded) and Inkerman, and
siege of Sebastopol, including sorties on 5th April and 9th May, defence of the Quarries 7th June, and
assault on the Redan 18th June—wounded (Medal and Clasps, Knight of the Legion of Honor, and 5th
Class of the Medj idie).
Adjutants.
1 Captain Young served with the 98th Regt. in the Paiijaub campaign of 1848-49 (Medal).
2 Captain Buchanan served us Adjutant with the 47th Regt. the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, including
the battles of Alma and Inkerman, sortie of 26th Oct., siege and fall of Sebastopol—appointed Town
Major (Medal and Clasps, Sardinian Medal, and 5th Class of the Medjidie).
3 Captain Hon. B. M. Ward served with the 47th Regt. the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, including the
battle of Inkerman, siege of Sebastopol, and sortie of 26th Oct. (Medal and Clasps, and Sardinian Medal).
4 Captain Coxon served in the Orange River Sovereignty, Cape of Good Hope, in 1851, where he was
dangerously wounded (shot through both thighs) in an encounter with Boers and Hottentots.
5 Captain Hanham served the Sutlej campaign of 1845-46, including the battles of Moodkee (wounded),
Ferozeshah, and Sobraon (Medal and Clasps).
6 Captain Roney served as Major in the 1st Jager Corps, British German Legion, from its formation,
accompanied it to the East, and was eventually appointed to the command of the corps.
7 Captain Padfield served the Eastern campaign of 1854-55 as Adjutant of the 20th Regt., including the
battles of Alma, Balaklava, and Inker naan (wounded, and horse shot ui*der him), and siege operations against
Sebastopol—severely wounded (Medal and Clasps).
8 Captain Hughes has the 4th Class of the Medjidie for Service with the late Turkish Contingent.
10 Captain Little served in the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, including the siege of Sebasumol (wounded
28th March), attack on the Quarries 7th June, and on the Redan 18th June ( Medal and Clasp).
11 Captain Sidebottom served with the Butts at the siege of Sebastopol in 1855 (Medal and Clasp;.
12 Captain Bell served the Eastern campaign of 1854 55, including the baitles oi Alma and Inkerman,
siege and fall of Sebastopol, and affair in the Cemetery (Medal and three Clasps, and Sardinian Medal).
14 Major Welman commanded a detachment of the 80th, embarked in the private schooner Ariel, at
the capture by surprise of the piratical schooner Hannah in a harbour of the Mercury Islands on the
26th Oct. 1843, for which he received the thanks of the Governor of New Zealand, and the approbation of
the Duke of Wellington. He served the campaign on the Sutlej in 1845-6 as Adjutant of the 80th, in¬
cluding the battles of Moodkee, Ferozeshah, and Sobraon (Medal and two Clasps).
