TVar Services of the Battalion Field Officers.
1 Colonel Jervis served in the 72nd Highlanders the Kaffir campaigns of 1834-35 (Medal).
2 Colonel Phillips served with the 43rd Light Infantry in the Kaffir war of 1851-3 (Medal), and was
promoted Brevet Lt.-Col. for his services.
3 Major Wombwell served with the 46th Regt. at the siege of Sebastopol in 1854-55 (Medal and Clasp,
Brevet-Major, and 5th Class of the Medjidie).
3f Lt.-Colonel Whitmore served the Eastern campaign of 1854 as Aide-de-Camp to Sir George Brown
including the battles of the Alma (horse shot) and Inkerman,and siege of Sebastopol (Medal and Clasps,
Knight of the Legion of Honor, and 5th Class of the Medjidie).
4 Major Ellis served with the 33rd Regt. at the siege of Sebastopol in 1855 (wounded 15th Aug.), and at
the assaults of the Kedan on the 18th June and 8th Sept, (wounded) (Medal and Clasp, Brevet Major, and
5th Class of the Medjidie).
5 Colonel Armstrong served the Eastern campaign of 1854-55 (during 1854 as a Major of Brigade in
the 2nd Division), and was present at the battles of Alma, Balaklava, and Inkerman (horse killed), and
siege of Sebastopol, sortie on 26th Oct.(horse shot); commanded the left column of the storming party at
the capture of the Quarries—twice severely wounded, first by a grape-shot in the thigh, and afterwards by
the explosion of a Fougass (Medal and four Clasps, Brevets of Major and Lt.-Colonel, Knight of the
Legion of Honor, and 4th Class of the Medjidie).
6 Major Dowbiggin served the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, including the battles of Alma and Inker-
man, and siege of Sebastopol (Medal and Clasps, Brevet Major, Knight of the Legion of Honor, and 5th
Class of the Medjidie).
7 Colonel Street served in the 98th Regt. with the expedition to the North of China in 1842 (Medal)
and was present at the attack and capture of Chinkiangfoo, and at the landing before Nankin. Embarked
for the Crimea 18th Sept. 1854, as Brigade Major, 1st Brigade, 4th Division ; was present at the battles of
Balaklava and Inkerman, siege and fall of Sebastopol, and expedition to Kinbourn (Medal and three Clasps,
Brevet Major, CB., Sardinian Medal, and 4th Class of the Medjidie).
8 Lt.-Colonel Wright served during the Kaffir war of 1846-47; also that of 1852-53, on the staff ( Medal). Was senior sur¬
viving officer of the troops embarked in H.M.S. Birkenhead, which vessel was wrecked off1 Danger Point, Cape of Good
Hope, on the night of the 26th Feb. 1852. Promoted to the rank of Major and awarded a pension of 100/. per annum for
"distinguished services;” and subsequently promoted to the rank of Lieut -Colonel for *' service in the field.”
9 Colonel Borton served with the 9th Regt. the campaign of 1842 in Afghanistan (Med»l), and that of
1845-46 on the Sutlej, including the battles of Moodkee and Ferozesbah (Medal and Clasp)—in the latter
he succeeded to the command of the Regt. and was severely wounded. Served also the campaign in the
Crimea, in command of the Regiment, from 27th Nov. 1854, including the siege and fall of Sebastopol, and
