38th (The 1st Staffordshire) Regt. of Foot.
2 Colonel Sparks served on the N. E. frontier of the Cape of Good Hope against the Kaffirs in 1817 ;
on the expedition into Kaffraria under Col. Brereton in 1818; in the action at Graham’s Town 22nd April
1819, and the campaign of the' same year in Kaffraria under Col. Wiltshire; on the N. E. frontier when, the
Kaffirs invaded,it in Dec. 1834, and during the war which ensued he commanded a local corps—the Graham’s
Town Volunteers—with the Colonial Commission of Lt.-Colonel. In 1848 he was sent from Jamaica to the
Mosquito Coast, in consequence of the death of H. M.’s Agent and Consul-General, to attend to British
interests there, and received the thanks of H. M.'s Government. Served throughout the Eastern campaign
of 1854-55, except from the middle of Feb. to the end of May 1855 (sent to England on duty); succeeded
to the command of the 38th Regt. on the morning of the 18th June when Lt.-Col. Louth was wounded,
was the senior unwoanded officer of the 2nd Brigade 3rd Division at the close of the action, and commanded
it for ten days. Has the Kaffir Medal, the Crimean Medal with three*Clasps for Alma, Inkerman, and
Sebastopol, and the Sardinian Medal, is a CB., an Officer of the Legion of Honor, and has the 4th Class
of the Medjidie).
2+ Lt.-Colonel Kelly served with the 31st Regt. in the Crimea from 22nd May to the end of June 1855,
including the attack on the outworks of Sebastopol on the 18th June (Medal and Clasp, and 5th Class of the
Medjidie).
5 Lt.Colonel Gloster served in the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, including the battles of Alma and Inker-
man, siege and fall of Sebastopol (Medal with three Clasps, and Brevet Major).
8 Major L. H. Daniel served at the siege and fall of Sebastopol in 1855, and at the attack and occupation
of the Cemetery on the 18th June, severely wounded (Medal and Clasp, Brevet Major, and 5th Class of the
Medjidie).
10 Major Vance served at the siege of Sebastopol from Jan. to 15th April 1855 (Medal and Clasp).
11 Captain Craster served in the Eastern campaign of 1854, including the battles of Alma and Inkerman,
and siege of Sebastopol (Medal and three Clasps).
12 Major Snodgrass landed with the army at Old Fort, 14th Sept. 1854, as Aide-de-Camp to Major-General
Sir John Campbell, and was present at the battles of Alma and Inkerman, and siege of Sebastopol, expe¬
dition to Kertch, and assault on the Redan 18ih June (severely wounded); present with the 38th Regt. at
the close of the campaign (Medal and three Clasps, Brevet Major, Sardinian Medal, and 5th Class of the
Medjidie).
13 Major Hon. C. J. Addington served the Eastern campaign of 1854 and up to 26th June 1855, including
the battles of Alma and Inkerman, siege of Sebastopol, attack and occupation of the Cemetery on the 18th
June—severely wounded (Medal and three Clasps, and 5th Class of the Medjidie).
14 Captain Dickins served the Eastern campaign of 1854 and up to IQth July 1855, including the battles
of Alma and Inkerman, and siege of Sebastopol; with Volunteer Sharpshooters from 17th Oct. to 20th Nov.;
repulse of a sortie on 21st Dec.; commanded the Light Company in the attack of the Cemetery on the 18th
June; was severely wounded in the advanced trenches on the 2nd July (Medal and three Clasps, and Knight
of the Legion of Honor).
15 Captain Quicke served in the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, including the battle of Inkerman, siege and
fall of Sebastopol; with Volunteer Sharpshooters from 20th Nov. to 31st Dec., attack and occupation of the
Cemetery on the 18th June (Medal and three Clasps, and 5th Class of the Medjidie).
16 Captain Gaynor served the Eastern campaign of 1854 and until 25th Feb. 1855, including the battles of
Alma and Inkerman, and siege of Sebastopol, and was shot through the leg in the trenches on 21st Feb.
(Medal and three Clasps, and Sardinian Medal).
1/ Lieut. Boyle served with the 38th Regt. throughout the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, including the
battles of Alma (carried the colours) and Balaklava, siege and fall of Sebastopol, attack and occupation of
the Cemetery on the 18th June (Medal and three Clasps).
20 Captain Elies served at the siege and fall of Sebastopol in 1854-55, including the attack and occupation
of the Cemetery on the 18th June (Medal and Clasp, and Knight of the Legion of Honor).
21 Licuts. Snell and Stansfeld served at the siege and fall ot Sebastopol from 1st June 1855, including the
attack and occupation of the Cemetery on the 18th June (Medal and Clasp).
22 Lieut. Eyre served in the Eastern campaign from 10th Nov. 1854 to 10th May 1855, including the siege
of Sebastopol (Medal and Clasp).
23 Lieut. Ewen served at the siege and fall of Sebastopol from 13th Jan. 1855, including the attack and
occupation of the Cemetery on the 18th June (Medal and Clasp, and Sardinian Medal).
24 Lieut. John Evans served the Eastern campaign of 1854 and up to 30th Aug. 1855, including the battles
of Alma and Inkerman, siege of Sebastopol, attack and occupation of the Cemetery (Medal and three Clasps).
25 Lieut. Mayo served at the siege and fall of Sebastopol from 29th Aug. 1855 (Medal and Clasp).
26 Lieut. Hume served at the siege and fall of Sebastopol from 1st July 1855 (Medal and Clasp).
27 Lieut. Wilkie served at the siege and fall of Sebastopol from 23rd July 1855 (Medal and Clasp).
28 Lieut. Caldecott served in the Crimea from 7th Sept. 1855, and was at the fall of Sebastopol (Medal and
Clasp).
29 Qr.-Master Smith served at the siege and fall of Sebastopol, including the attack and occupation of the
Cemetery (Medal and Clasp).
30 Surgeon Wall served at the siege and fall of Sebastopol from IQth Dec. 1854, and at the attack of the
18th June 1855 (Medal and Clasp).
31 Assist.Surgeon Lawlor served throughout the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, including the battles of
Alma and Inkerman, siege and fall of Sebastopol, and attack of the 18th June (Medal and three Clasps, and
5th Class of the Medjidie).
32 Assist.Surgeon Lewis served throughout the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, including the battles of
Alma and Inkerman, siege and fall of Sebastopol, attack and occupation of the Cemetery (Medal and three
Clasps).
33 Assist.Surgeon Wright served with the 20th Regt. the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, including the
