1 Lord Downes was appointed
Aide.de-Camp to Sir John Cradock,
whom he accompanied to Portugal
in Nov. 1808, where Sir John held
the chief command until May 1809,
when he was succeeded by the Duke
of Wellington, with whom Lord
Downes continued as Aide-de-Camp
and Assistant Military Secretary
during the whole war, and was pre¬
sent at the battles of Talavera
(slightly wounded), Busaco, Puentes
d’Onor, and El Bodon; sieges of
Ciudad Rodrigo and Badajoz, battles
of Salamanca, Vittoria, and the
Pyrenees ; siege of San Sebastian,
battles of the Nivelle (horse shot),
Nive, and Toulouse (slightly
wounded). His Lordship has re¬
ceived the Gold Cross & one Clasp
for Vittoria, Pyrenees, Nivelle,
Nive, & Toulouse; and the Silver
War Medal and six Clasps for
Talavera. Busaco, Puentes d’Onor,
Ciudad Rodrigo, Badajoz, and Sa¬
lamanca.
18 Assist.-Surgeon Mackinnon served the
Eastern campaign of 1854-55, with the 42nd
Highlanders, including the battles of Alma and
Balaklava, expedition to Kertch, siege and fall
of Sebastopol, and assault of the outworks on
the 18th June (Medal and Clasp).

2 Colonel Congreve commanded the 29th Regt. in the Sutlej campaign in 1845, and was severely wounded at the
battle of Ferozeshah (Medal and CR). Also throughout the Punjaub campaign in 1848-49, including the passage of the
Chenab, battles of Chillianwallah and Goojerat, and pursuit of the Seik army across the Jelnm (Medal and two Clasps),
Officiated as Adjutant General H. M.’s Forces in India in 1857, and was present with the force which proceeded under
the Commander in Chief against the Mutineers at Delhi; at the battle of Budlee-ke-Serai and the heights at Delhi on
the 8ih June, and subsequent Siege operations until the end of July 1857.
