152 Major General Gordon was at the capture of Martinique in 1809, and of Guadaloupe
in 1810, for which Jie has received the War Medal with two Clasps.
153 Major General George Elliot served with the Eoyal Marine Battalion in co-operation
with the Spanish troops against the Carlists in 1837, and received the Cross of San Fernando,
1st Class. Served on the China expedition (Medal), and was wounded in the attack on the
intrenched camps on the heights of Segoan, 15th March 1842. Was present at the bombard¬
ment of Odessa, 22nd April 1854 ; landed with the Royal Marines for the defence of Eupa-
toria ; was at the siege of Sebastopol (Medal and Clasp, and 5th Class of the Medjidie),
154 Major General Langford served with the Battalion in Spain from June 1836 to Sept.
1840, and was present in the actions of Fuenterabia and Hernani, besides various minor affairs.
While serving in H. M. S. North Star, from Sept. 1841 to Sept. 1846, he participated in the
operations of the Expeditionary Force in China, including the blockade of the Woosung River
(Medal). On the termination of hostilities with China he proceeded in the North Star to
New Zealand ; and was landed with all the detachments of Royal Marines from H.M. ships
present, and appointed to command that force, together with a detachment of the 96th Regt.,
with which he was actively employed in the field against the insurgent chiefs, whose strongly -
stockaded Pahs, or Villages, were successfully attacked and destroyed: for these services he
obtained the Brevet rank of Major. Accompanied the expedition to the Baltic in 1854.
155 Major General Marcus J. Slade commanded the 90th Light Infantry throughout the
Kaffir War of 1846-47 (Medal).
156 Major General MacKinnon served as Assistant Quarter-Master-General at the Cape of
Good Hope during the Kaffir war of 1846-7 (Medal). Served as Colonel on the Staff and in
command of the 2nd Division from the outbreak of the Kaffir war in December 1850 until April
1852, and received the thanks of the Commander of the Forces, Sir Harry Smith, in General
Orders on fifteen different occasions on which he commanded in operations against the enemy.
157 Sir Edward Lugard served as a Major of Brigade throughout the campaign of 1842 in
Affghanistan under Gen. Pollock, and was present in the actions of Mazeena, Tezeen, and
Jugdulluck, the occupation of Cabool, and the different engagements leading to it (Medal).
He served throughout the campaign on the Sutlej (Medal);—as Dep. Assist. Adj. Gen. to Sir
Harry Smith at the battles of Moodkee (wounded), Ferozeshah (wounded), and Sobraon ;—
as Adj. Gen. of the whole Force commanded by Sir Harry at the affair of Buddiwal, and in
the battle of Aliwal; and he officiated as Adj.Gen. of Her Majesty’s Forces in India, from
the battle of Sobraon to the end of the campaign, when he was appointed Asst. Adj. Gen. to
H.M.’s Forces in India. • He again officiated as Adjt.Gen. throughout the Punjaub campaign in
1848-49, and was present at the passage of the Chenab, and battles of Chillianwallah and
Goojerat (Medal and Clasps). Served as chief of the Staff on the Persian expedition in 1857.
Was promoted to the rank of Major General and nominated a KCB. l;for his services in the
command of a Division at the capture of Lucknow, and subsequently in the command of the
Azimghur Field Force.”
158 Major General Hon. George Upton served in the 1st Battalion of Coldstream Guards
throughout the Eastern campaign of 1854, including the battles of the Alma, Balaklava, and
Inkerman (wounded and horse killed), and siege of Sebastopol (Medal and Clasps, CB., Officer
of the Legion of Honor, and 3rd Class of the Medjidie).
159 Major General T. Simson Pratt served the campaign of 1814 in Holland, as a volunteer
with the 56th Regt., and was present at the attack on Merxem, 2nd Feb, and the subsequent
bombardment of Antwerp. He served with the 26th on the China expedition (Medal), and
commanded the land forces at the assault and capture of the Forts of Chuenpee on the 7th
January 1841, and again at the assault and capture of the Bogue Forts on the 26th February
following. Commanded the 26th at the attacks on Canton from 24th May to 1st June ; also
at the night attack on Ningpo, at Segoan, Chapoo, Woosung, Shanghai, and at Chin Kiang Foo.
160 Major General Felix served the campaign of 1815,,and was slightly wounded at Quatre
Bras.
161 Major General Lockyer served in the Peninsula with the 71st Regt. from Aug. 1813 to
the end of the war, including the battles of Nivelle, Nive, Orthes, Aire (severely wounded on
left wrist and elbow joint) and Toulouse, besides all the minor affairs after the army entered
France. On the 20th May 1854 he sailed for the Piraeus in command of the British
contingent directed in conjunction with a French force for the occupation of Greece. November
following he joined the army in the Crimea, and was placed in command of the 2nd Brigade,
2nd Division, and remained with the army the whole of the winter and spring of 1854-55,
never missing a tour of duty in the trenches. Left the Crimea in Aug. 1855 to take up his
appointment as commander of the Forces in the Island of Ceylon. He has received the War
Medal with three Clasps, the Crimean Medal with Clasp for Sebastopol, is a CB. and K.H.,
Officer of the Legion of Honor, and 3rd Class of the Medjidie.
162 Major General Baynes served as Midshipman in the Royal Navy for three years, and
in 1809 was present at the capture of Ischia, Zante, Cephalonica, and Cerigo; and was in the
action of the Spartan frigate in the Bay of Naples, 3 May 1810 (War Medal). Served in the
Ionian Islands from 1812 to 1817, including the capture of Paxo in 1813, and occupation of
