employed in the operations against Kurnool, and was severely and dangerously wounded at
the affair of Zorapore on the Z8th of October. He commanded a Brigade in the battle of
Maharajpore (Medal) on the 29th Dec. 1843, in which action his horse was shot under him in
taking the battery at Chounda.
143 Major General Portlock served in the last American War.
144 Sir John Inglis served with the 32nd in Canada during the Rebellion in 1837, and was
present in the actions of St. Denis and St. Eustache. He served also the Punjaub campaign
of 1848-9, and was present at the first and second siege operations before Mooltan, including
the attack on the enemy’s position in front of the advanced trenches on the 12th Sept., where,
after the death of Lieut.-Col. Pattonn, he succeeded to the command of the right column of
attack; commanded the 32nd at the action of Soorjkoond; and also present at the storm and
capture of the city and surrender of the fortress of Mooltan, surrender of the fort and garrison
of Cheniote, and battle of Goojerat, for which services he received the brevet rank of Lieut.-
Colonel (Medal and Clasps). Was promoted to the rank of Major General and nominated a
KGB. “for his enduring fortitude and persevering gallantry in the defence of the Residency
of Lucknow, for eighty-seven days, against an overwhelming force of the Enemy.”
145 Major General Griffin served before Genoa in 1814.
146 Sir James Hope Grant served in China (Medal) as Brigade-Major to Lord Saltoun, and
was present at the assault and capture of Chin Kiang Foo, and at the landing before Nankin.
He served with the 9th Lancers at Sobraon (Medal) in 1846; and he commanded the Regiment
during the greater part of the campaign in the Punjaub in 1848-9, including the passage of
the Chenab at Ramnuggur, and battle of Chillianwallah: he was also present at the battle of
Goojerat (Medal and Clasps). Commanded the Cavalry Brigade as Brigadier-General during
the siege and at the assault of Delhi in 1857, and had his horse shot under him during the
operations of the 19th June. Was promoted to the rank of Major General and nominated a
KCB. “ for his eminent services in command of the Cavalry Division at the siege of Delhi,
and in that of a Division at the relief of Lucknow under Sir Colin Campbell, as also in the
subsequent operations at Cawnpore when the rebel army sustained a total defeat.”
147 Sir Gaspard Le Marchant served as Adjutant-General to the Anglo-Spanish Legion,
and Brigadier-General in the Spanish service during the years 1835, 6, and 7 : was present at
the relief of Bilboa and affair before that town in Sept. 1835, engaged on the heights of Aria-
ban, in Alava, on the 16th, 17th, and 18th Jan.; in raising the siege of San Sebastian, and
storming the Lines 5th May; passage of the Urmea, and taking of Passages 28 th May; in the
general action before Alza Oct. 1836, besides several affairs in Guipuzcoa, as also in the gene¬
ral actions of the 10th, 13th, 15th, and 16th March before Hernani: for these services he re¬
ceived a Medal, also 3rd Class St. Fernando, and Knight of Charles the Third.
148 Major General Wortham served the campaigns of 1813 and 14 in Spain and France,
including the siege of St. Sebastian, from 20th Aug. to 9th Sept. 1813; battles of Orthes and
Toulouse. Served afterwards with the army in America, from 14th Sept. 1814, to 24th May
1815, including the attack on the American Lines before New Orleans, 8th Jan. 1815, and the
siege and capture of Fort Bowyer from 8th to 11th Feb. 1815. He has received the Silver
War Medal with three Clasps.
149 Sir William Mansfield served with the 53rd in the campaign on the Sutlej in 1846,
and was present at Buddiwal, Aliwal, and Sobraon, at which last he acted as Aide-de-Camp
to the Commander-in-Chief (Medal and Clasps). He commanded the Regiment in the Punjaub
campaign in 1849, and was present at the battle of Goojerat (Medal and Clasp). He was also
constantly employed in the operations on the Peshawur frontier in 1851-52, whether his Regi¬
ment was in the field or not, and was present at the affairs of Nawadund, Pranghur, and
Skarkote (horse wounded). Was promoted to the rank of Major General “in recognition of
his valuable services as Chief of the Staff in the East Indies ” having been present at the relief
of Lucknow and subsequent operations under Lord Clyde.
150 Major General Harold served the campaign and battle of Corunna, for which he has
received the War Medal with one Clasp. Expedition to Walcheren and siege of Flushing.
151 Sir Thomas Franks commanded the 10th Regt. in the Sutlej campaign of 1845-6,
including the battle of Sobraon (Medal), where he had a horse shot under him, and was
slightly wounded: nominated a CB. Commanded the 10th in the Punjaub campaign of 1848-9,
including the whole of the siege operations before Mooltan: 17th Aug. 1848 commanded the
troops which repulsed the enemy’s night-attack upon the British camp at Muttee Thol:
12th Sept, commanded the left column of attack at the defeat of the enemy in their strongly-
entrenched position before Mooltan; and after the action succeeded to the command of the
whole of the troops which were engaged, and held the position until relieved the following
morning, although wounded and exposed to the repeated attempts of the enemy to retake it;
7th Nov. in the action of Soorjkoond commanded the right Brigade, and with it led the attack,
capturing the whole of the enemy’s guns at the point of the bayonet without firing a shot:
27th Nov. in the carrying of the heights before Mooltan, commanded the reserve on the extreme
right, and directed the attack of its leading column. On the 18th Feb. 1849 he oined with
the Mooltan force the army under Lord Gough, and commanded the 10th at the battle of
Goojerat, and was specially named for his conduct both by the Commander in Chief and the
Governor General (Medal and Clasps). Was promoted to the rank of Major General and
