War Services of the Medical Officers.
Inspectors- General.
1 Dr. Bone’s services:—Expedition to South America in 1807; campaign of 1808 and 9, in¬
cluding the battles of Roleia, Vimiera, and Corunna,—for which he has received the War Medal
with three Clasps ; expedition to Walcheren ; Peninsula from May 1812 to the end of the war.
2 Mr. Draper served in Sicily in 1806 ; in Egypt in 1807 ; the Corunna campaign ; in
Portugal in 1811; in Holland in 1814. He has received the War Medal with two Clasps for
Maida and Corunna.
3 Sir James Fellowes served in the Peninsula and has received the War Medal with one Clasp
for Barrosa.
4 Dr. Gillkrest was present with the expedition in the West Indies in 1801 under Sir Thomas
Trigge, including the capture of the islands of St. Martin, St. John, St. Bartholomew, St.
Thomas, and Santa Cruz. Served as Surgeon of a regiment in the Light Division throughout
the war in the Peninsula, including the battle of Yimiera; retreat to, and battle of Corunna;
retreat from Burgos, actions of the Coa (near Almeida), Busaco, Sabugal, Puentes d’Onor,
Salamanca, Vittoria, the Pyrenees, Nivelle, Nive, and Toulouse; and the sieges of Ciudad
Rodrigo and San Sebastian, at which latter he accompanied the storming party. Served also at
New Orleans in 1815. He has received the War Medal with twelve Clasps.
5 Sir James Grant served as Hospital-Assistant in the campaign of 1793 with the army
under the Duke of York. In 1795 he was senior Staff Surgeon to the expedition for the cap¬
ture of the Cape of Good Hope. In 1809 he served thr oughout the Walcheren campaign, in
which he was appointed Inspector to the Forces in the Field, having the charge at the bombard¬
ment of Flushing, and in South Beveland. He served the campaigns of 1813 and 14 in Holland
and Belgium as chief of the department. In 1815 he served the campaign of Waterloo as chief
of the medical department of the Duke of Wellington’s army ; and he continued as medical
chief of that army during the three years’ occupation of France.
6 Mr. John Gunning served in Holland and Flanders in 1793, 94, and 95. Embarked with
the Peninsular Army in 1808 as Surgeon to the Commander-in-Chief and Staff Surgeon, and
was afterwards made Deputy Inspector and Surgeon-in-Chief, and served until the close of that
war in 1814 : he has received the War Medal with eleven Clasps for Roleia, Yimiera, Talavera,
Busaco, Puentes d’On r, Ciudad Rodrigo, Badajoz, Salamanca, Vittoria, St. Sebastian, and
Orthes. He was also at Waterloo as Snrgeon-in-Chitf of the Army, and was honored with the
Order of the Netherlands Lion by the King of Holland, for his attendance upon the then Prince
of Orange who was wounded on the Field of Battle.
8 Doctor Hume served in Egypt in 1801. Also in the Peninsular war and has received the
War Medal with nine Clasps for Corunna, Barrosa, Sa'amanca, Vittoria, Pyrenees, Nivelle, Nive,
Orthes, and Toulouse.
9 Doctor Kidd served in Ireland during the rebellion in 1798; on the Expedition to North
Holland in 1799 ; at the Ferrol in 1800; on the expedition to South America in 1806 ; in the
Peninsula from 1807 to March 1813; campaign of 1813 and 14 in Germany and Holland. He
has received the War Medal with two Clasps for Roleia and Salamanca,
