War Services of the Officers of the Royal Marines.
Rivers (Medal). On the termination of hostilities with China he proceeded in the North Star
to New Zealand ; and was landed with all the detachments of Royal Marines from H. M. ships
present, and appointed to command that force, together with a detachment of the 96th
Regt., with which he was actively employed in the field against the insurgent chiefs, whose
strongly stockaded Pahs, or Villages, were successfully attacked and destroyed: for these
services he obtained the Brevet rank of Major.
45 Captain Fraser landed for the protection of British property at Lima, during the revo¬
lution in Dec. 1835, when in possession of the rebels. For his conduct on that occasion, he
was presented with a piece of plate by the merchants.
46 Captain J. H. Wright served with the Battalion from 1836 to 1840, in co-operation
with the Spanish Army, and was present at the action of Fuenterabia, 11th July, 1836,
the field actions of the 10th, 12th, and 14th March, and Hernani, 16th March, 1837.
47 Capt. Langley served in the operations on the North Coast of Spain in command of
the detachment of Royal Marines of H.M.S. Castor, during 1834 and two following years,
and was severely wounded on the 9th June 1836, defending the heights of Passages against
a very superior force of Carlists.
48 Captain Brittain was presented with a sword by the merchants of Bombay, for services
performed against pirates in the Straits of Malacca.
49 Capt. Simon Fraser served throughout the campaign in Syria, including the storm and
capture of Sidon, the surrender of Beyrout, and the bombard, and capture of St. Jean d’Acre.
50 Capt. Parker was wounded through the arm at Prescott, in Upper Canada, 13th
Nov. 1838.
51 Capt. Maxwell served on the China expedition, and was present at the battle of
Chuenpee, attack of batteries of Anunghoy and North Wantung, advance on Canton,
storming the heights and entrenched camp of Canton, bombardment of Culongso.
52 Capt. Spalding served in command of a Company throughout the operations in
Syria, in 1840, and was slightly wounded at the attack on Gebail. He has received the
Syrian Medal.
53 Capt. Marriott served two years with the expeditionary force in China, and was
present at the first capture of Chusan ; assisted at the demolition of the Bogue Forts in
the Canton River; participated in the actions of the first and second Bars ; was engaged
in the destruction of all the enemy’s sea and river defences, including the fortresses of
French Folly and Hoqua’s Fort; bombardment and taking of Macao Passage Fort;
storming of the Bird’s Nest Batlerv, and finally at the combined attack on the enemy’s
position and entrenched camp on the heights above Canton.
54 Capt. Shewen was employed during the whole of the campaign on the coast of Syria,
including the storming and capture of Sidon, surrender of Beyrout, and bombardment and
fall of St. Jean d’Acre. Served also with the battalion at the camp at d’Jouni.
55 CaptainTimpson served as Adjutant to the Royal Marine Battalion in 1842 at the cap¬
ture of Tscke and heights of Segoan, attack on the hill defences and capture of Chapoo,
capture of the batteries and city of Woosung, capture of the batteries of Le Shau, assault
and capture of Chin Kiang Foo, and landing before Nankin.
56 Lieut. A. J. B. Hambly served on the China expedition (Medal), and was severely
wounded in the attack on the entrenched camps on the heights of Segoan, 15th March, 1842.
He served also in the operations on the Coast of Borneo in 1845 and 46, including the
attack on Malloodoo Bay.
57 Lieut. Adair was slightly wounded in the assault upon Gebail, in Syria, 12th
Sept. 1840.
58 Lieut. Farmar served on the China expedition, and was present at the battle of
Chuenpee, attack of the Anunghoy batteries, advance on Canton, capture of the heights of
Canton, capture of Colongso, second capture of Chusan, assault and capture of the citadel
and city of Chinhae, entry into Ningpo.
59 Lieut. Harrison served in the operations on the Coast of Syria (Medal), including
the attacks on the fortress of D’Jehail, and bombardment and capture of Acre. He served
also in New Zealand, and was present at the taking of the fortified Pah at Ruapekapeka on
the 11th Jan. 1846.
60 Lt. Lawrence acted as Aide-de-camp to Capt. Hotham, R. N. while taking and
destroying the batteries, &c. at Punta Obligada, in the river Parana, on the 20th Nov. 1845.
61 Lieut. J. A. Stewart served on the coast of Syria during the whole of the campaign,
and was at the taking of Sidon, and at the siege of St. Jean d’Acre in H. M. S. Edinburgh.
Served also on the coast of Africa for two years, during which time he assisted at the de¬
struction of several Barracoons on the coast, when about 1200 slaves were liberated.
62 Lieut. Pickard served on the China expedition, and was present at the battle of
Chuenpee, attack of batteries of Anunghoy and North Wantung, advance on Canton,
storming the heights of Canton, bombardment of Colongso.
63 Lieuts. Dyer, J. W. A. Kennedy, and Mansell were present at the attack on and
destruction of Malloodoo, in Borneo.
67 Captain Lawrence served in bomb vessels in 1805 and 6 between Dunkirk and
Boulogne, and was several times engaged with the French flotilla. In 1807 he was present
