War Services of the Officers of the Royal Artillery.
I Sir Thomas Downman served in Flanders in 1793 and 4, including actions at Cateau,
Lannoy, and Roubaix, at which last he was taken prisoner. Commanded a troop of horse
artillery during the Corunna campaign. Served in the Peninsula from Sept. 1810 to May
1813, including siege of Ciudad Rodrigo, and battle of Salamanca. Sir Thomas has
received the gold Medal for Salamanca, and the silver War Medal with three clasps for
Sahagun and Benevente, Corunna, and Ciudad Rodrigo.
3 Lieut.-General Evelegh served the Corunna campaign, and has received the War Medal
with one clasp for Sahagun and Benevente.
4 Lieut.-General Hon. W. H. Gardner accompanied the expedition to Walcheren, and
was present at the siege and capture of Flushing.
5 Lieut.-General Walker served on the Continent in 1794 and 5, and received three
wounds in the retirement of the army across the Rhine near Arnheim, viz. one severely
through the right arm below the elbow; the others above the elbow, and in the right hip.
6 Major-General Brough was at the capture of St. Lucia in 1790, and that of Guadaloupe
in 1815.
7 Major-General Smith’s services: — attack of Minorca in 1798; siege of Malta, 1800;
defence of Porto Ferrajo, 1802; expedition to Waleheren, and siege of Flushing; Peninsular
campaigns from January 1813, to May 1814, including the battle of Vittoria, passage of the
Bidassoa and Nive, and siege of St. Sebastian. Campaign of 1815, including the battle of
Waterloo. He has received the gold Medal and one clasp for Yittoria and St. Sebastian,
and tlie silver War Medal with two clasps for Nivelle and Nive.
9 Sir Hew Ross served in the Peninsula and France from 9th June, 1809 to Feb. 1814,
including the action of the Coa, battle of Busaco, actions of Pombal, Redinha (wounded in
the shoulder), Casal Nova, Foz d’Arouce (wounded in the leg), and Sabugal; battle of
Fuentes d’Onor, action of Aldea de Ponte, sieges of Ciudad Rodrigo and Badajoz, (dangerously
