1 Sir Ralph Darling’s servicesin 1793, the slaves in the island of Granada, assisted by the French from Guadaloupr,
having revolted and murdered the Governor and upwatds of forty of the principal inhabitant.-, he was employed w ith his Regt
(the 451h) in quelling the insurrection, in Jan. 1797, volunteered on the expedition against Trinidad, and was present at the
liestruction of the Spanish ships of war, and at the surrender ot the island. In July 1799. proceeded with the expedition against
the Dutch settlement of Surinam, and was employed in the arrangements for the capitulation, and present at the surrender of
that colony. In April 1801, proceeded w ith the expedition aga.nst the Danish and Swedish islands, St. Croix, St. Thomas, St.
Martin, and St. Earthoiomew , and was present at their reduction. In Seplember 1808, his Uegt (the hist) being ordered on
active service, he resigned h is stalf employment ( Principal Ass is. Adjt. General) and took the command of it. Joined the army
under Sir John Moore, in Spain, and was present during the advance and retreat, the action at Lugo, and battle of Corunna,
for which last he received a Medal. In July 1809, was appointed Dep. Adjt.-General to the Force
the Earl of Chatham, and was present at the siege and surrender of Flushing. " *
