War Services of the Majors.
and was present at the battle of Yimiera ; on the expedition to Walcheren in 1809 ; and subse¬
quently in the Peninsula, including the defence of Tarifa, battles of Barrosa (wounded), Vittoria,
and the Nive, and blockade of Bayonne. He has received the War Medal with four Clasps.
34 Major Stack served in the Peninsula with the 24th from June 1809 to Feb. 1813, and again
from 2nd Dec. 1813 to the end of that war in 1814, including the battles of Talavera (wounded)
and Busaco, actions at Espinal and Foz d’Arouce, repulse of a sortie at Ciudad Rodrigo, battle of
Salamanca, capture of the Retiro at Madrid, taking of the hills and outworks before Burgos, siege
of Burgos and storming of the breaches (severely contused), various skirmishes with the rear¬
guard and covering party at the bridge over the Carrion on the retreat, and battle of Orthes,
where he was severely wounded by a ball, which shattered the left elbow-joint, and occasioned
amputation of the arm. Served eight years in Canada, and received a severe contusion on the
head in 1829, when on duty. He has received the War Medal with five Clasps.
35 Major Donaldson served in the Peninsula with the 57th, from June 1809 to the end of that
war in 1814, including the siege of Badajoz in April 1811, battles of Albuhera, Vittoria, and the
Pyrenees.
36 Major Clements served at the capture of the Cape of Good Hope in 1806 ; subsequently on
the expedition to South America; the campaign of 1808-9 in Spain, and extra aide-de-camp to
Sir John Moore at the battle of Corunna. On the expedition to Walcheren in 1809 ; the Penin¬
sular campaigns from 1810 to 1814, including Cavares and Merina, Salamanca, Begar, Vittoria,
Valley of Bastan, and the Pyrenees. He has received the War Medal with three Clasps for Co¬
runna, Vittoria, and Pyrenees.
37 Major Doyle served with the expedition to South America, including the siege of and sortie
from Monte Video, and storm by the enemy of Colonia. Served also in the south of France from
Dec. 1813 to the end of that war in 1814, including the blockade of Bayonne and repulse of the
sortie, where he received a contusion on the left arm.
38 Major Harrison served in the American war.
39 Major Murphy served in the Peninsula from Dec. 1808 until the end of the war, including
actions at Albeigana and Grijo, passage of the Douro, capture of Coimbra, siege and capture of
San Sebastian, passage of the Bidassoa, action at Bidart (wounded); battles of Nivelle, Nive,
9th, 10th (wounded), 11th, 12th, and 13th Dee.; blockade of Bayonne, action of St. Ellemo, and
battle of Toulouse. He has received the Gold Medal for Toulouse, and the Silver War Medal with
four Clasps for the Pyrenees, St. Sebastian. Nivelle, and Nive.
40 Major Hooper served in the Peninsula from 1809 to 1811—when he was sent to England on
account of his wounds—and was present at the battle of Busaco, lines at Torres Vedras, skirmishes
on the retreat of Massena, actions at Campo Mayor and Bella Castel, first siege of Badajoz, taking
of Olivenqa, and battle of Albuhera, where he was severely wounded through the shoulder in a
charee.
41 Major Willats served in the Peninsula from 1812 to the end of the war, including the siege
and storming of Ciudad Rodrigo, siege and storming of Badajoz from 19th Jan. to 6th April 1812;
operations near and blockade of Bayonne. He has received the War Medal with two Clasps.
42 Major Thomas Reid served with the 33rd at the capture of Bourbon and the Isle of France
in 1810; the campaign of 1813 and 14 in Germany and Holland, including both attacks on
Merxem and storming of Bergen-op-Zoom. Also the campaign of 1815, including the battle of
Quatre Bras, retreat of the 17 th June, and battle of Waterloo, where he was severely wounded.
43 Major Cox served at Travancore in 1809, and in Ava in 1825.
44 Major Fox served in the Peninsula with the Royals and was present at the battles of Corunna
and Fuentes d’Onor, for which he has received the War Medal with two Clasps.
45 Major Charters served with the expedition to Hanover, under Lord Cathcart, in 1805 ; the
Walcheren expedition, in 1809 ; and campaign in Holland, under Lord Lynedoch, in 1814.
46 Major Mason served with the expedition to the coast of America in 1813, and was engaged
in several small actions. Present also at the capture of Moose Island, in the Bay of Fundy, in
1814.
47 Major Handcock accompanied the expedition to Hanover in 1805; joined the army in
Sicily in 1806, and was employed with its various operations from 1806 to 1810; went with the
expedition to Naples, and was present at the capture of Ischia and Procida; returned to Sicily
and employed against the French army, in 1811. Served in Spain during 1812 and 13, including
the battle of Castalla, siege of Tarragona, and affair of Villa Franca. Also the campaign of 1815,
and was severely wounded at Waterloo.
48 Major Sutherland served with the 72nd at the capture of the Cape of Good Hope in 1806 ;
and accompanied the force from thence to co-operate at the capture of the Isle of France in 1810.
49 Major Gregory served in the American war in 1814 and 15, and commanded a gun-boat
belonging to the Flotilla under Commander Owen, on Lake Ontario, for which he received the
thanks of the Naval Commander-in-Chief.
50 Major Wright served at the capture of Madeira, in 1808 ; and the campaign in the Penin¬
sula, under Sir John Moore, in 1808-9. He has received the War Medal with one Clasp for
Corunna.
51 Major Stewart served with the 25th at the reduction of Martinique, St. Martin’s, and St.
Eustatius, in 1809; and of Guadaloupe in 1810, and again in 1815.
