War Services of the Colonels.
operations of that campaign. Served afterwards in the Peninsula from Feb. 1809 to the end of
tLat war in 1814—either in command of a regiment of Portugese or a brigade—and was pre¬
sent at the action of Grijon, passage of the Douro, battle of Fuentes d'Onor, first siege of
Badajoz, siege and assault of Ciudad Rodrigo, battles of Yittoria, the Pyrenees, Nivelle, and
Orthes. Sir John has received a Medal for services in Egypt; and the Gold Cross and one
Clasp for Fuentes d'Onor, Ciudad Rodrigo, Yittoria, the Pyrenees, and Orthes.
14 Colonel John Hamilton served the Egyptian Campaign of 1801 with the Coldstream
Guards. Accompanied a detachment of that regiment to the Pen'nsula in March 1810 ; and in
April was appointed Deputy-Assistant-Quarter-Master-General at Isla de Leon. Went to
England in March 1812; rejoined the regiment in the Peninsula in July 1813, and served there
until the end of that war in 1814. He has received the War Medal with two Clasps for Barrosa
and the Nive.
15 Colonel Raikes served with the Coldstream Guards on the expedition to Hanover in
1805-6 ; and at Copenhagen in 1807. Embarked with the re giment for the Peninsula, 31st of
Dec. 1808, and served there until 26lh of January 1812 ; and again from August 1812 to 16th
May 1813, and was present at the battles of Talavera, Butaeo, and Fuentes d Ouor, for which
he has received the War Medal with three Clasps.
16 Colonel Keate served in the Peninsula from Dec. 1808 to Jan. 1813, including the passage
of the Douro, affair near Salamanca, battle of Butaco, siege of Ciudad Rodrigo, covering the
siege of Badaji z, battle of Sa'amanca, capture of Madrid, and siege of Burgos. He has received
the War Medal with three Clasps for Bu. aco, Ciudad Rodrigo, and Salamanca
17 Colonel Ward served in the Peninsula, and has received the Gold Medal and two Clasps for
Salamanca, Badajoz (severely wounded at the assault), and the Pyrenees ; and the Silver War
Medal with one Cla*p for Busaco.
18 Colonel B'ake served with the 20th Dragoons at the capture of the Cape of Good Hope in
1806 ; proceeded from thence to South America, and was in the action at Maldonado and siege
of Monte Video. Served in Portugal in 1808 and 9, including the battles of Ruleia and
Vimiera (Gold Medal); also at the passage of the Douro. In Sicily in 1810 and 11; subse¬
quently on the eastern coast of Spain, including the battle of Castalla, and action at Vil'a Franca.
19 Colouel Jodrell served in Sicily in 1806 and 1807. He went to Cadiz in March 1810, and
remained there till April 1811, having been present at the battle of Barrosa. In Sept. 1812 he
joined the Duke of Wellington’s army in the Peninsula, and served there until the end of that
war in 1814. He has received the War Medal with three Clasps for Barrosa, Nivelle, and Nive.
20 Colonel Henry Dawkins served in the Peninsula with the Guards, from Feb. 1810 to the
end of that war in 1814 : Major of Brigade from June 1810, including the battle of Fuentes
d’Onor, siege of Ciudad Rodrigo, battle of Salamanca, siege of Burgos, battles of Vittoria, Ni¬
velle, and Nive ; passage of the Adour, blockade of Bayonne and repulse of the sortie, on which
last occasion he was severely wounded. Served also the campaign of 1815, including the battle
of Waterloo. He has received the War Medal with five Clasps.
21 Colonel Peter Brown served with the 82nd on an expedition to the coast of France early
in 1800, and subsequently in the Mediterranean. He served with the 23rd at the siege and
capture of Copenhagen in 1807 ; afterwards in North America ; also at the siege and capture
of Martinique in 1809 ; and in the Peninsula from 1810 to the end of that war in 1814. As
Commandant of detachments at Belem he established a school upon the model of the Royal
Military Asylum at Chelsea, for the numerous children of the soldiers’ families left at that
station. He also served on the Staff in the Netherlands, as Commandant of Ghent, and sub¬
sequently with the Army of Occupation in France. He has received the War Medal with one
Clasp for Martinique.
24 Colonel Fielding Browne accompanied the 40th to the Peninsula in July 1808, and w as
present at the battles of Roleia, Vimiera, Talavera, and Busaco ; on the retreat to, and at the
occupation of, the Lines of Torres Vedras, siege of Badajoz, in May 1811, and repulse of the
sortie from Fort San Christoval ; actions of El Bodon and Aldea de Ponte, siege and storming
of Ciudad Rodrigo, siege and storming of Badajoz, action at Canizal, battle of Salamanca, cap¬
ture of Madrid, and subsequent retreat therefrom. Served also on the expedition against New
Orleans. Commanded the regiment at the battle of Waterloo. He has received the Gold
Medal for Badajoz (having commanded the regiment at the assault) ; and the Silver War Medal
with seven Clasps for the other battles and siege.
25 Colonel Childers served with the 11th Dragoons at the Helder in 1799 ; the Peninsular
campaigns from May 1811 to the end of that war in 1814, and has received the War Medal
with two Clasps for Salamanca and Vittoria. Also the campaign of 1815, as Major of Brigade
to Sir John Vandeleur, including the battle of Waterloo. Commanded a brigade of Cavalry
at the siege and capture of Bhurtpore, under Lord Combermere.
26 Colonel the Honourable Leicester Stanhope was employed in South America in 1807, and
was present at the attack on Buenos Ayres. Served also in the Mahratta war of 1817 and 18,
including the battle of Maheidpore, and storming of Talneir.
27 Colonel Alexander Higginson served the campaign of 1808-9, including the battle of Co¬
runna ; the expedition to Walcheren in 1809 ; and the Peninsular campaigns of 1812, 13,
and 14. He has received the War Medal with three Clasps for Corunna, Nivelle, and Nive.
