1809 to the end of that war in 1814, including the battles of Talavera and Castalla. He has
received the War Medal with one Clasp for Talavera.
84 Major-General Parkinson served at the capture of the Island of Bourbon in 1810, as
Deputy-Adjutant-General. Proceeded with the 33rd to Stralsund in Pomerania in 1813; and
from thence to Holland in 1814 ; was present at the attack on Merxem and bombardment of
Antwerp, and commanded the regt. at the storming of Bergen-op-Zoom, where he received a
severe contusion. Served also the campaign of 1815, and was severely wounded at Quatre Bras.
85 Major-General Lluellyn served in the 52nd at Ferrol, Cadiz, and in the Mediterranean,
in 1800 and 1801. Having obtained a company by purchase in the 28th regt, he accompanied
it to the Peninsula in 1809, and, with the exception of one year’s absence in England, occasioned
by ill-health, he was actively employed with it in the various duties that fell to its share in the
campaigns in which it bore such a conspicuous part. Besides many services of minor impor¬
tance, he was present with his regiment at the battle of Busaco, defence of the Lines of Lisbon,
advance on Campo Mayor, siege of Badajoz, battle of Albuhera, capture of a French corps at
Arroyo de Molino, attack and capture of the Forts and Bridge of Almaraz, advance on Aranjuez
and Madrid, occupation of Bourdeaux, In 1815 he embarked with his regiment for the
Netherlands, where he was personally engaged with it in the battles of Quatre Bras and
Waterloo, in the latter of which he was severely wounded, and received for his conduct in the
field the brevet rank of Lt.-Colonel and the Companionship of the Bath. He has received the
War Medal with two Clasps for Busaco and Albuhera.
86 Major-General Lautour served in the Peninsula with the 11th Dragoons in 1811 and 12;
he attacked, with a squadron, on the 26th Sept. 1811, near El Bodon, a French Cavalry Regt.
which had captured part of the baggage of the Light Division, and covered the retreat of the
74th, aiid five companies of the 60th, from Ciudad Rodrigo. Present also at the siege of Bada¬
joz and battle of Salamanca. Whilst in command of a squadron he attacked, and took pri¬
soners, a company of French Artillery posted in a vineyard, near Valladolid, supporting the
enemy’s cavalry on 7th Sept. 1812, during the time the Army was crossing the Douro; he also
repulsed an attack of the enemy’s piquets, making one officer and many men prisoners, at Mo-
nasterio and in front of Burgos on 2nd Oct. 1812; and he was continually on outpost duty, and
almost daily engaged with the enemy’s skirmishers, and was slightly wounded in the retreat
from Burgos by the bursting of a shell. Served the campaign of 1815, with the 23rd Light
Dragoons, and was present in the actions of the 16th and 17th June, and at the battle of
Waterloo, where he succeeded to the command of the regiment and of the brigade. He has
received the War Medal with one Clasp for Salamanca.
87 Major-General Egerton, after serving as a subaltern with the 29th in North America,
and proceeding as a Captain with the 89th to South America, accompanied the 2nd battalion of
the 34th to the Peninsula in 1809. In the following year he was appointed to the staff as
Deputy-Assistant-Adjutant-General, and attached to the second division, in which capacity he
served at the battle of Busaco, and on the retreat to, and during the subsequent occupation of,
the Lines before Lisbon. He was then removed as senior of the Adjutant-General’s department
to the fourth division; was present at the siege and capture of Olivenca, the first siege of
Badajoz, battle of Albuhera (wounded), and action of Aldea de Ponte. Relinquished his staff
appointment and rejoined his regiment in the winter of 1811, and continued to serve with it
until appointed Aide-de-camp to Sir Rowland Hill in 1812, on whose personal staff he remained
until the termination of the war, and was present at the battles of Vittoria, Pyrenees,—for
which he obtained the brevet rank of Major,—Nivelle, NLve, Orthes, and Toulouse. On Lord
Hill’s appointment to a command with the army in Flanders in the spring of 1815, he selected
Colonel Egerton as his first Aide-de-camp, who served as such at the battle of Waterloo,—
where he obtained the brevet of Lieut.-Colonel,—and continued in the same capacity until the
return of the Army of Occupation from France in 1818. When Lord Hill assumed the com¬
mand of the army in chief in 1828, he was pleased to name Colonel Egerton for the confidential
appointment of first Aide-de-camp and private Secretary, which he held during the whole period
‘ of his Lordship’s continuance at the head of the army. He has received the War Medal with
eight Clasps.
88 Sir William Chalmers served in Sicily in 1806 and 7; campaigns of 1808-9 in Portugal
and Spain; expedition to Walcheren, including bombardment of Flushing; at Cadiz in 1810
and 11; and all the succeeding Peninsular campaigns, including the battle of Barrosa, attack of
the enemy on the heights near Moresco, affair of Senhora de la Pena, battle of Salamanca,
action of San Munos, battle of Vittoria, attack at Maya, battles of the Pyrenees on the 30th
and 31st July, repulse of the enemy in his attack of the heights of St. Antonio, 31st August,
attack of the enemy’s forts near S irre, 9th Oct. 1813, battle of Nivelle, besides a great many
minor affairs and skirmishes on the advance to Madrid and capture of the Retiro. He was
present with the army in the Peninsula during almost all the sieges, and was engaged in the
following affairs during the retreat from Burgos, viz., Olmos, Monasterio, bridge of Valladolid,
and passage of the Huebra, Served also in the Netherlands in 1814 and 15, including the
battle of Waterloo, capture of Paris, and posterior operations in France, to Aug. 1817. He
was severely wounded in assault of the entrenchments at Sarre, and has had nine horses killed
or wounded under him in action, three of them at Waterloo. During the above campaigns he
