War Services of the Officers of the Royal Marines,
80 Lieut. John Miller served at the battle of Navarino, in 1827.
80* Lieut. George Elliott served on the China expedition, and was wounded in the attack
on the intrenched camps on the heights of Segoan, 15th March, 1842.
81 Lieut. Langford served in co-operation with the Spanish and Legion Forces on the
north coast of Spain for a period of nearly four years and a half, including the actions of
Fuenterabia and Hernani.
82 Lieut. Urquhart was at the reduction of the Fort of Munora in Scinde, in Feb. 1839.
Debarked with a detachment of his Corps, under a brisk fire, at Bushier in the Persian
Gulf, for the protection of the East India Company’s Political Resident. He was present
at nearly all the affairs in China, from the capture of Chusan up to the attack on the heights
above Canton, under Sir Hugh Gough. His name was also favourably mentioned in the
Dispatches of Sir Gordon Bremer.
83 Lieut. Fraser landed for the protection of British property at Lima, during the revo¬
lution in Dec. 1835, when in possession of the rebels. For his conduct on that occasion, he
was presented with a piece of plate by the merchants.
84 Lieut. J. H. Wright served with the Battalion, in co-operation with the Spanish and
Legion forces on the north coast of Spain, from 1836 to 1840, and was present at the
actions of Fuenterabia and Hernani.
85 Lieut. Brittain was presented with a sword by the merchants of Bombay, for services
performed against pirates in the Straits of Malacca.
86 Lieut. Parker was wounded through the arm at Prescott, in Upper Canada, 13th
Nov. 1838.
87 Lieut. Shewen was employed during the whole of the campaign on the coast of Syria,
including the storming and capture of Sidon, surrender of Beyrout, and bombardment and
fall of St. Jean d’Acre. Served also with the Battalion at the camp at D’Jouni.
88 Lieut. White served with Battalion, in co-operation with the Spanish and Legion
forces, on the north coast of Spain, and was taken prisoner by the Carlists. Served also
on the China expedition, and was wounded at the assault and capture of the forts and bat¬
teries of Chunpee, 7th Jan. 1841.
89 Lieut. A. J. B. Hambly served on the China expedition, and was severely wounded
in the attack on the intrenched camps on the heights of Segoan, 15th March, 1842.
90 Lieut. C. W. Adair was slightly wounded in the assault upon Gebail, in Syria,
12th Sept. 1840.
91 Capt. Hookey served as Yolunteer 1st class, in His Majesty’s ship Prince of Wales,
from Jan. to Dec. 1805, and was in the general action of the 22nd Dec. 1805. Served in
the West Indies, from 1806 until 1809, including the capture of Les Saints, and Martinique,
and several actions in boats cutting out French vessels, and destroying batteries, &c. From
1809 to 1811 served on board H. M. S. Theban, blockading the French flotilla at Boulogne;
several times in action with them. Assisted in the boats cutting out a large French lugger
at Dieppe. From 1812 to 1814, served on board His Majesty’s ship Daphne, in the Baltic,
and was several times in action with Danish gun-boats in the Belt.
92 Captain Wolrige served in the year 1809 with Lord Cochrane in Basque Roads ; and
in the same year was engaged in action with gun-boats in the Baltic. From 1810 to 1812
defence of Cadiz and Tarrifa. Severely wounded at South Beveland in 1814, and received
a reward from the Patriotic Fund. Present at the battle of Algiers in 1816.
93 Doctor Rae has served in every quarter of the globe ; eight years in the East Indies at
one period, and was at the destruction of the Dutch squadron in Surabaya, in 1808. He has
been in frequent engagements with batteries, and in the cutting out of numerous vessels, and
in many boat-actions.
94 Doctor Charlton was present in the attack upon the island of Corisco, western coast
of Africa, by the boats of H. M. sloop Wolverine, on the 7th Nov. 1840.
95*Lieut. Marriott served two years with the expeditionary force in China, and was
present at the first capture of Chusan ; assisted at the demolition of the Bogue Forts in
the Canton River ; participated in the actions of the first and second Bars ; was engaged
in the destruction of all the enemy’s sea and river defences, including the fortresses of
French Folly and Hoqua’s Fort; bombardment and taking of Macao Passage Fort ;
storming of the Bird’s Nest Battery, and finally at the combined attack on the enemy’s
position and entrenched camp on the heights above Canton.
