War Services of the Colonels. 51
1 Sir David Cnnynghame served the campaign of 1793, including the actions at Famars,
St. Amand, and Lincelles (severely wounded) ; also the siege of Valenciennes. Taken
prisoner in the acticm at Ostend in Ma}' 1798.
2 Sir Archibald Christie served the campaigns of 1793, 94, and 95 on the Continent, and
was present at Dunkirk, and the siege of Newport. In 1794 accompanied the expedition
under Lord Moira, to the coast of France, and returned to Flanders—was present at the
forcing of the enemy from St. Andree, and was severely wounded at Bommell in Holland.
3 Colonel the Honourable Alex. Abercromby served in Holland, in 1799; with the ex¬
pedition to the Ferrol, in 1800 ; and subsequently in the Peninsula, including the battles of
Albuhera, Vittoria, Pyrenees, and Orthes, for which he has received a cross. Served also
the campaign of 1815, including the battle of Waterloo.
4 Colonel Sherlock served the campaign of 1794 and 95 in Flanders, Holland, and Ger¬
many, with the 8th Light Dragoons, including the attack of Bousbeque, all the outpost
affairs on the retreat from Ostend, particularly at Alost and at DuiFeldt; action at Boxtel,
where his horse was killed under him, and the retreat from the Rhine. Proceeded to the
Peninsula in command of the 4th Dragoon Guards, in August 1811, and served there until
that regiment returned to England, in May 1813.
5 Lord Portarlington served in Holland, in 1799 ; with the expedition to Hanover, in
1805 ; the Peninsular campaign of 1809, including the battle of Talavera ; the campaign of
1815, including the actions of Quatre Bras and Waterloo.
6 Sir Robert Chambre Hill served in the Peninsula, and commanded a brigade of cavalry
at the battle of Vittoria, for which he has received a medal. Served also the campaign of
1815, and was severely wounded at Waterloo.
7 Sir Wm. Cox served at the retaking of Grenada, in 1796 ; in Egypt, in 1801; em-
jdoyed on a particular service in Si)ain in 1808, and was present in the action at Lugo, and
battle of Corunna. Commanded the fortress of Almeida, from April 1809 to the 27th Aug.
1810, when, by the unfortunate explosion of its magazines, he was obliged to surrender it
to the army under Massena.
8 Sir Horatio Towushend served in the Peninsula, France, and Flanders, with the Grena¬
dier Guards, and was severely wounded at Quatre Bras.
9 Colonel John Frederick Browne served in Flanders in 1793, 94, and 95, including the
siege of Nimeguen and sortie from thence ; at the taking of St. Lucia, in 1796 ; the Egyptian
campaign of 1801, including the actions of the 8th, loth, and 21st March ; with the expe¬
dition to Hanover, in 1805 ; the campaign in Zealand, in 1807 ; expedition to Sweden, in
1808 ; and to Walcheren, in 1809. Served afterwards in the Peninsula, and commanded
the 28th regiment at the battle of Barrosa, for which he has received a medal.
10. Colonel Burslem served at the capture of the Isle of France; also at the attack and
conquest of Java, for which he has received a medal.
11 Colonel Ansley served the Egyptian cam])aign of 1801, and was severely wounded at
the battle of Alexandria. Medal for services in Egypt.
12 Colonel Gauntlett, was actively employed against the Maroons in the West Indies.
Served also in Egypt.
13 Colonel Woodgate has received a medal for the battle of Fuentes d'Onor, and was
wounded in that action.
14 Colonel Patrickson served in the Peninsula with the 43d Light Infantry, and has
received a medal for the battle of Toulouse, on which occasion he commanded the
regiment.
15 Colonel Thornton served in the Peninsula, and commanded the 40th regiment at the
battles of Talavera, Nivelle, Orthes, and Toulouse, for which he has received a cross.
16 Sir John Milley Doyle served the Egyptian campaign of 1801, including the actions
of the 8th, 13th, and 21st March. Served also in the Peninsula, and commanded the 19th
Portuguese at Fuentes d'Onor, Ciudad Rodrigo, Vittoria, the Pyrenees, and Orthes, for
which he has received a cross and a clasp. He has also received a medal for services in
Egypt.
17 Colonel Gold proceeded to India with a detachment of volunteers from the Royal
Artillery, which landed at Madras 10th Oct. 1791, and served under Earl Cornwallis at his
defeat of Tippoo Sultan's Army 6th Feb. 1792, and subsequent siege of Seringapatam.
Served at the siege and capture of Pondicherry from the French, in Aug. 1793; against the
Poligar Chief of Manapar, in 1795 ; and at the first conquest of Ceylon and capture of Co¬
lombo in the same year. Went with reinforcement to the Walcheren expedition, in Dec.
1809. Accompanied the expedition to Holland under Sir Tho. Graham, in Nov. 1813, and
was present at the attack on Merxem, and bombardment of Antwerp. Served also the cam¬
paign of 1815, including the battle of Waterloo and cn|)ture of Paris.
18 Colonel Keate served in the Peninsula from Dec. 1808 to Jan. 1813, including the
passage of the Douro, battle of Busaco, siege of Ciudad Rodrigo, battle of Salamanca and
siege of Burgos.
19 Colonel Ward served in the Peninsula, and has received a medal and two clasps for
Salamanca, Badajoz, and the Pyrenees.
