655 War Services of the Officers of the Militia.
Devon.—1 Lt.Colonel Ferguson Davie served with the Grenadier Guards at the siege and fall
of Sebastopol from 29th Aug. 1855 (Medal and Clasp, and Turkish Medal).
2 Major Rattray served with the 13th Light Infantry throughout the campaigns in Affghan-
istan of 1838 and 1842, and was present at the storm and capture of Ghuznee (Medal), assault
and capture of the town and forts of Tootumdunal], storm ot Jhoolghur, night-attack at Baboo
Khoosh Ghur, destruction of Khardurrah, assault of Terwandurrah, storming of the Khoord
Cabul Pass, affair of Tezeen, forcing the Jugdulluk Pass, reduction of the fort of Mamoo Khail,
heroic defence of Jellalabad, and sorties on the 14th Nov. and 1st Dec. 1841, 11th March, 24th
March, and 1st April 1842; general action and defeat of Akbar Khan before Jellalabad, 7th April
1842 (Medal), storming the heights of Juijdulluck, general action of Tezeen and recapture of
Cabul (Medal). Wasseverely wounded whilst skirmishing on the Jugdulluck heights 29th Oct. 1841.
3 Captain Holman served in the Peninsula from Nov. 1811, attached to the Portuguese
service, and was present with Lord Hill's corps covering tlie siege of Badajoz, advance on
Llerena, siege and storm of the three fortified convents of Salamanca,—led the storming party to
the gate of San Vincente at its capture, battle of Salamanca,—slightly wounded by a musket-
shot in the leg; siege of Burgos, and storming the works and the White Church ; several skirmishes
on the retreat from thence near Torrequemada, and blowing up the bridge of Duenas ; battles of
the Pyrenees on the 28th, 29th, and 30th July ; night-attack and defeat of a French battalion on
the heights of Urdax, action near Zugarrimundi,—severe contused wound; battles of the Nivelle
and the Nive, actions at Ustaritz and Villa Franque, battles of St. Pierre and Orthes, actions at
Aire, Vic Bigorre, and Tarbes, and battle of Toulouse. Served the campaign of 1815, including
the battle of Waterloo; also with the Army of Occupation in France. He has received the War
Medal with six Clasps.
5 Captain James served with the 20th Regt. in the Eastern campaign of 1864, including the
battles of Alma and Inkernian, and siege of Sebastopol (Medal and Clasp, and Turkish Medal).
6 Surgeon Sandford served in the Baltic Fleet and was at the capture of Bomarsund (Medal).
7 Captain Savile served through the whole of the Southern Mahratta campaign of 1844, and
was present with the storming parties at the forts of Samunghur, Paunella, and Pownghur; also
served in 1845 in the Concan, and Sawant Warree rebellion.
Donegal.—1 Major Todd served with the 40th Regt. throughout the operation in Candabar and
Aflfghanistan in 1841-42 (Medal), also present in the action at Maharajpore 29th Dec. 1843 (Medal).
Dorset.—1 Colonel Bingham served 24 years in the Indian Army, and was with his Regiment
in the Burmese war of 1824-5-6, for which he has the War Medal with one Clasp.
Do'wn.—1 Captain Peard served with the 20th Regt. the Eastern campaign of 1854, including
the battles of Alma, Balaklava, and Inkerman, and siege of Sebastopol (Medal and Clasps, and
Turkish Medal).
2 Major Browne served at the defence of Cadiz in 1812; campaign of 1814 on the Canadian
frontier; with the Army of Occupation in Franco from 1815 to 1818. Has been instrumental on
various occasions in saving the lives of 137 persons from shipwreck, for which he has been
awarded the Gold and Silver Medals of the Royal Shipwreck Institution.
Dublin.—1 Major Forsyth served the Eastern campaign of 1854-55 with the 57th Regt., and
was present at the battles of Balaklava and Inkerman, siege and fall of Sebastopol with capture
of the Quarries, assaults of the Redan on the 18th June and 8th Sept. • was also at the capture
of Kinbourn (Medal and three Clasps, Brevet of Major, Knight of the Legion of Honor, Sardinian
and Turkish Medals).
Durham.—1 Lt.Col. Hall served as Staff Officer with the Madras Artillery, in the Light Field
Foi'ce in the Southern Mahratta Country in 1841, and was present at the taking of the Fort of
Nepaunee ; served also with Lord Gough's expedition to China, commanding Troop of Horse
Artillery (Medal and Brevet Major). Joined Lord Raglan's force on 14th Nov. 1854, and served
as an Assistant Engineer until after the storming of the Redan on the 18tli June, on which day he
was employed in the advanced parallel. Transferred to the Turkish Contingent with rank of
Lt. Colonel, and succeeded to the command of the Field Artillery as Brigadier, which appointment
he held until the peace (Medal with Clasp for Sebastopol, 3rd Class of the Medjidic, and Turkish
Medal).
2 Captain Lleullyn served with the 45th Regt. in the Crimea from 8th Nov. 1854 to 6th March
1855, including the siege of Sebastopol (Medal and Clasp, and Turkish Medal).
3 Capt.Scarman carried the colours ofthe39th Regt. in the action of Maharajporc,and was wounded
in the left leg by a grape-shot; shortly after which he received a severe wound in the left arm.
4 Surgeon Nixon served in the Peninsula with the Coldstream Guards, and.hiis received the War
Medal with two Clasps for the battles of Fuentcs d'Onor and Salamanca.
Edinburg^h.—2 Captain Boulton served at the siege of Sebastopol from March to July 1855
(Medal and Clasp, and Turkish Medal).
Essex.—1 Major Jodrell served in the 18th Royal Irish through the whole of the operations
in China (Medal), and was wounded at Chapoo.
2 Captain Edenborough served as a volunteer in New Zealand during the operations in 1845, and
was present in several of the skirmishes ; he also volunteered his services in the Mounted Police in
New South Wales on sever;. 1 occasions, and was once slightly wounded.
3 Captain Lennard served with the 28th Regt. in tlie CriiTica from 27th Feb. to 5tli July 1855,
including the siege of Sobastopol and affair in the cemetery —severely woimded (Medal and Clasj),
and Turkish Medal).
Fermanagrta.—1 Captain A. Nixon joined the 27th Regiment in the Peninsula, and was
present at the battles of Vittoria, Pyrenees, Nivelle, Nive, Orthes (severely wounded) and Tou¬
louse, siege of San Sebastian, and various minor affairs (War Medal and seven Clasps). Served in
the American war in 1814-15, including the action at Platsburg; and was afterwards with the
Army of Occupation in France after the Capitulation of Paris until 1818.
