Depot Battalions.—War Services. 414
in 1848, including the assault and capture of the port of Serapiqui, and surrender of the Forts of Castello
Viejo and St. Carlos. He also iiccomjianied Captain Loch to the town of Grenada, and was present at the
deliberations and conclusion ol a tieaty with the Nicaragua Commissioners. Served the Eastern campaign
of 1854-55, including the battles of Alma and Inkennan, siege of Sebastopol, capture and occupation of the
Ceraeterv and suburbs on the 18th June, and was senior officer of the S8ih at the close of the war (Medal
and three Clasps, Knis;ht of Ihe Legion of Honor, 4th Class of the .Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
16 Lt.Colonel Hardy served the Eastern campaign of 1864, and commanded the detachment of two com¬
panies 46th Foot at the battles of the Alma, Biilaklava, and Inkerman (severely wounded in right shoulder),
and siege of Sebastopol (Medal and Clasps, Brevet Major, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
18 Lt.Colonel Wilkinson served with the 42d Highlanders in the Ciimea up to Oct. 1854, including the battle
of Alma and siege of Sebastopol (Medal and Clasp, otii CUiss of the Medjidie, and Turkisli Mediil. Served the
campiigu of 18o7-58 against the Mutineers in India, including the action of Kudygunge, siege and fall o
Lucknow, attack on the fort of Rooyali, aclion at AUygnnsie, and capture of Bareilly (Medal and Chisp).
19 Colonel Burton served at the siege of Sebastopol from 20th Nov. 1854 to 5th July 1855; commanded
the Light Company, 97th Regt., in the sortie on the night of the 2(lth Dec. 1854, and succeeded in driving
the Russians out of the most forward parallel, from which the Guard had been compelled to withdraw, and
retained its possession (Medal and Clasp, Brevet Lt.Colonel, Sardinian Medal, 5tn Class of the Medjidie,
and Turkish Medall. Served in Bengal in suppressing the Mutiny in 1857-59. with the Jounpore field force
in the action and capture of Fort Nusrutpore (commanded the Sharpshooters of the Brigade), actions of
Chanda, Ummeerpore, and Sultanpore (mentioned twice and thanked in despatch), siege and capture of
Lucknow and storming of the Kaiserbagh : afterwards served in Central India (Medal and Clasp).
80 Lt.Colonel MDonald served the Eastern campaign of 1834 as Aide-de-Camp lo General Pennefather,
including Uie battles ol the Alma (severely wmnded) and Inkermaii (severely wounded), and siege of Sebas-
topiil (Medal and Clasps, Brevet Major, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
21 Major Chiehester served at the siege of Sebastopol from 20th Nov. 18.i4 (Medal and Clasp, Brevet Major,
and Turkish Medal). Served in Bengal in suppressing the Mutiny in 1857-58, with the Jounpore field force
in the action of Nusrutpore, during part of which he commanded the reserve consisting of a Regt. of
Goorkas and a wing of the 97th Regt.; commanded the Selected Marksmen of the 97th with the Jounpore
field force, including the actions of Chanda, Ummeerpore, and Sultanpore; advanced with 2 Subalterns
and 80 men in support at the attack of Fort Dhowrara and passing through the village stormed two faces
of the entrenchments from the opposite side, and assisted in bringing out two guns under a close fire; was
afterwards at the siege and capture of Lucknow and storming of the Kaiser Bagh (thrice thanked in de¬
spatches. Medal and Clasp).
22 Lt.Col. Stewart served with the 1st lloyals the Eastern campaign up to 23rd April 1855, including the
battles of Alma and Inkerman and siege of Sebastopol (Medal and three Clasps, oth Class ol the Medjidie, and
Turkish Medal).
24 Major Greene served with the 43rd Light Infantry in tlie Kaffir war of 1861-53 (Medal). Nominated
to the 4ih Class of the Medjidie for service with the Turkish Contingent.
25 Colonel MuUer served with the 1st Royals in the Burmese war, under Sir Archibald Campbell (Medal).
26 Colonel Goodenough served at the siege of Sebastopol in 1854-55, and commanded the 34th Regt.
at the assault of the Redan on the 8th September (MedalTind Clasp, Brevet of Lt.-CoL, Knight of the
Legion of Honor, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkisih Medal),
27 .Major Nason served at the siege of Sebastopol from May 1855, including the assault on the Quarries
(Bt.Major), and on the Redan on 18lh June and 8th Sept. (Medal and Clasp, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and
Turkish Medal).
28 Lt.Colonel Hobbs served at the siege of Sebastopol in 1855, and commanded the 21st Fusiliera at the
attack on the Redan on the 18th June (Medal anc 'lasp, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
29 Colonel Kgerton served at the siege and lu^l of Sebastopol from 16th Dec. 1854, and attacks on the
18th June and 8th Sept. (Medal and Clasp, Sardinian and Tuikish Medals, and 5th Class of the Medjidie).
30 Colonel Farren served with the 47th Begt. the Eastern campaign oi 1854-55,-present unin¬
terruptedly with the expeditionary force from the commencement of the war wllh Kussia to the
breaiiing up ot the army in the Crimea at the conclusion of peace,—including the battles of Alma and
Inkerman, capture of Hulaklava, sortie on 26tb Oct., siege and fall of Sebaaiopol. Commanded the
47th Regt. at the battle ot [nkerman and uninterruptedly during the siege of Sebastopol (the trenches)
from 5th Nov. 1854 to 8th Nov. 1855, including the attacks of the 18th June and 8ih Sept.: at Inkerman
he was the senior officer of the 2nd Hrigade 2nd Division coming out of action—mentioned in Dispatches
(Medal and Clasps, Brevet of Lt.Col., CJ3.,Officer of the Legion of Honor, Sardinian and Tuikish Medals,
and 4th Class of the Medjidie).
81 Major Swatfield served with the Slat Regt. in the Crimea from 22nd May 1855 and was present at
the siege and fall of Sebasiopol, and attacks on the Redan on the IHth June and Hth Sept. (Medal and
Clasp, 5th Clasp of the Medjiuie, and Turkish Medal). Served throughout the campaign in the North of
China in l8*>0. including the action of Sinho, and storming of Tangku (Medal).
82 Major West landed in theCrimea with the 48th Regt. on the 2l6t April 1855, and served at the siege
of Sebastopol (iledal and Cla«p, Knight of the Legion of Honor, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish
Medal).
36 Colonel Nugent served in the field in New Zealand during 1815-46; commanded the advanced
guard which penetrated the forest surrounding Ruapekapeka, and was present at the capture of that Pah
on nth Jan 1846.
37 Lt.Colouel Knox commanded the 67th Eegt. throughout the campaign of 1S60 in China, including the
action of Sinbo, taking of Tonghoo, and led the storming party acioss the main ditch at the taking of the
inner Takoo fort, when seventy-seven officers and men of the 67th were killed or wounded ; also present at
the surrender of Pekin (mentioned in dispatches, CB., Medal and Clasps).
40 Major Skipwith served throughout the Eastern campaign of 1854-55 with the 41st Regt., including the
battles of Alma and Inkerman, siege and fall of Senastopol, and repulse of the po>verful sortie of 26th"bet.
(Medal and three €la-ps. Brevet Major, Knight of the Legion of Honor, Sard)nian and Turkish Medals,
and 5ih rlass of the Medjulie).
41 Major King served with the 55th Regt. on the China expedition (Medal), at Amoy, Chnsan, Chinhae
ncludiiig repulse of night-attack), Cliapoo, Woosung, Shanghae, and Chin Kiang Foo. Also the Eastern
campaign of 1854, including the battle of Alma and siege of Sebastopol (Medal and Clasps, and Tuikish
Medal).
42 Major Drewe served with the 23rd Fusiliers the Eastern campaign of 11854-55, including the battles
of Alma and Inkerman, siege and fall of Sebastopol, attack of the Quarries, also attacks of the 18th June
and 8th hept.—wounded and mentioned in Disjiatches (Medal and three Clasps, Brevet Major, Knight
of the Legion of Honor, Sardinian and Turkish Medals).
43 Lt.Colonel Gordon served with the 93rd Highlanders the Eastern campaign of 18,H and up to llth
July 185.'i, including the battles of Alma and Balaklava, expedition to the Sea of Azoff, capture of
Kertch and Yenikali, and siege of Sebastopol (Medal and Clasps, BrevetLf.Col., 5th Class of the Medji¬
die, and Turkish Medal). Served i.T the Indian campaign under Sir Colin Campbell from Sept. 1857 to
April 18.i8, including the relief of Lncknow, action at Cawnpore, and final capture of Lucknow; at
the relief ni Lucknow from ISih to 24th Nov. commanded the 53r(i llegt., for which he was made a CB ;
commanded left wing 9:ird llighlandersat the storming of the Drguni's Palace, and specially mentioned
in despaiches as comn anding a part of the U3rd in dislodging ti,e enemy ironi their last position in
Lucknoiv (Medal and two Clasps).
41 Majnr Elton served with the .55th Regt. the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, including the battle of
Inkermaii. siej,'e and fall of Sebastopol, Sortie ot 26tb Oct., attack on the Quarries (mentioned in
despatclies), and assault of the Redan on the 8th Sept. (mentioned in despatches); was wounded in the
