Gill of June, 1st of October (woiuideJ) 1838; a^so lOih and IStli of March 1837. Attacked near Hernani,
16tli March, by the ilite of tlie Carlist army, 10,000 strong (about double the allied force), and obliged to
retreat about one mile, but with a less loss in killed and wounded (600) than that of the enemy. Besumed

Yrun, by storm 17 th May- o( Fontarabia by capitulation, 18th May. Tliese, and other minor art airs, were
for the most part, severely contested, and cost (including those of the enemy) above ten thousand killed
and wounded. Excepting occasionally two or three stragglers, gene rally without arms, the Legion never lost
(under his command) prisoners, artillery, or equipage, iliou^ih utterly conirary statements repeatedly ap¬
peared at the time—while iie took from lhe enemy 100 officers, 1000 in. n, thirty pieces of cannon, several
entrenched positions,fortified towns nnd posts, with an extensive and most important strategical tract of
Ihe instirsieiit territory, including their main line of retreat, communication and supply. Thenceforth

sioners' Dispatch, Parliamentary Paper)—and tlms did this auxiliary corps decisively contribute to Ihe
successful termination of the war. He holds the rank of Lieut.General in the national army of Spain, tpy
licence of a British royal warrant; also, honoured by Her Majesty for these services wiljj the Cross of
Commander of the Bath, and by the government of Spain with the Grand Crosses of St. Ferdinand and
Charles III. Beceived his Company, Majority, and Lieut.Colonelcy in the British service for conduct
against the enemy. Sir De Lney has received the War Medal with three Clasps for Vittoria, Pyrenees, and
Touloese. Commanded tlie 2nd Division in the Eastern campaign of 1854, including the battles of the
Alma (wounded), Balaklava, and Inkerman, and siege of Sebastopol, comprising the repulse of the powerful
sortie on the 26th Oct. 1854 (Medal and Cla8|.s, GCli., Grand Officer of the Legion of Honor, and 1st
Class of tlie Medjidio).
2 Colonel Stuart served the Eastern campaign of 1854 and latter part of 1855, including Ihe IiattUs
of Alma, Balaklava, and Inkerraan, siege and fall of Scbastopol (Medal and Clasps, 6th Class of the
Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
3 Lt.Colonel Lowe sen-ed with the 32nd Regt. at the first and second siege operations before Mooltan,
including the attack on the cucniy'.i position in front of the advanced trenches on 12fli Sept. 1818, on
which occasion lie succeeded to the command of tlic companies of the 32nd Ucgt. that were engaged; he was
also present at tlie action of Sooijkooud, storm and captiu-e of tlic city and surrender of the fortress of Mooltan,
