^ Lieut.General During served in the Peninsula during the Corunna campaign, and subsequently from the latter
part of t3i2 to the end of that war in 1S14, including the biittles of Corunna, Vittoria, Pyrenees, the Nivelle, the
Nive, Orthes, and Toulouse, for which he has received the War Medal with seven Clasps.
^ Major General Daveney sei-ved with the ist Royals the Crimea,n campaign of 1854, including the battles of
Alma amd Balaklava, and siege of Sebastopol (Medal with three Clasps, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish
Medal).
^ Major General Walsh commanded a Battalion on the China expedition of 1857-58, including the blockade of the
Canton river, the landing before and storming of Canton {CB., Medal with Clasp).
^' Major General M'KiUop served with the R.M. Battalion in conjunction with the French army at the bombard¬
ment and surrender of the Forts of Bomarsnnd in Aug. 1854 (Medal).
5^ Major General Moore was at the destruction of 58 piratical vessels at Cho-Keum in October 1849. Accompanied
the expedition to the Baltic in 1855 (Medal).
'* Major General Cleaveland served on the north coast of Spain in 1837-39, in co-operation with the Spanish army,
towards the conclusion ef the war in San Sebastian and its vicinity.
"' Major General Simon Fraser served throughout the campaign in Syria (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal),
including the storming and capture of Sidon (in command of three companies which forced the Citadel Gate), sur¬
render of Beyrout, bombardment and capture of St. Jean d'Acre. Served with the B.M. Brigade in the Crimea in
1854-55, including the battle of Balaklava and siege of Sebastopol, acted as Major in the Marine Batteries, and in
command of No. 3 Battery was actively engaged at the battle of Balaklava (Medal with two Clasps, Brevet Major,
5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
'^ Major General Cunningham served the Gwalior campaign of 1843-44, ^^<^ ''^^^ present at the battle of Punniar
(Bronze StarJ. Also served the Punjaub campaign of 1848-49, including the battles of ChilUanwallah and Goojerat
(Medal with two Clasps, and Brevet of Major).
" Major General John Fraser commanded a Battalion of Royal Marines in the Crimea at the siege of Sebastopol in
1854 (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal).
'^ Major General Burmester commanded the 59th Regt. at the operations before Canton and capture of the city
(Brevet of Lt. Colonel, Medal with Clasp, and CB.).
*i Major General Newton served with the Coldstream Guards in the Crimean Campaign from i8th Oct. 1854 to 8th
April 1S55 including the battles of Balaklava and Inkerman, and siege of Sebastopol (Medal with three Clasps, 5th
Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
'^ Major General Dixon served with the 77th Regt. the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, including the liattles of Alma
and Inkerman, and siege of Sebastopol (Medal with three Clasps, Brevet Lt.Colonel, CB., Knight of the Legion of
Honor, 4th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
** Major General Perceval served with the Coldstream Guards in the Crimean campaign from Sth April 1855, includ¬
ing the siege and fall of Sebastopol (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal).
^ Major General T. C. Smith, prior to entering the Army, served for a short period in the Navy, and was three
times wounded. He served in the Peninsula from June 1813 to the end of that war in 1814, and was present at the
affair of OrdaL He served also the campaign of 1815, and was wounded at the battle of Waterloo.
*' Major General Pott served the Gwalior campaign of 1843-44 smd was present at the battle of Maharajpore
(Bronze Star).
™ Major General Morris served in the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, and was present at the siege and fall of Sebas¬
topol (iledal with Clasp, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
8^ Major General Crombie embarked in Feb. 1854 with the Coldstream Guards for Turkey, and served in Bulgaria.
'' Major General Doherty served with the 14th Light Dragoons throughout the Punjaub campaign of 1848-49,
including the action of Ramnuggur, passage of the Chenab, battles of Chillianwallah and Goojerat, pursuit of the
«neniy across the Jhelum, and of the Affghans over the Indus through the Khyber Pass (Medal with two Clasps).
At Ramnaggur he brought the charging squadrons, under Col. Havelock, who wa,s killed, across the nullah and out
of the enemy's entrenchments; and at Goojerat he commanded a body of H.M. Dragoons and Native Light Cavalry.
^* Major General Ferryman commanded the 89th Begt. in the Crimean campaign from 15th Dec. 1854, including
the siege and fall of Sebastopol, and attacks on the i8th June and Sth Sept. (Medal with Clasp, CB., Knight of the
Legion of Honor, 4th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
'5 Major General Faher served with the 49th Regt. throughout the war with China (Medal), and was present at the
first and second captures of Chusan, storm and capture of the heights above Canton, attack and capture of Amoy
and of Chinae (mentioned in despatches, and Brevet of Major), occupation of Ningpo and repulse of the night
attack, attack and capture of the enemy's entrenched camp on the heights of Segoan, of Chapoo, and of Woosung,
and investment of Nankin. Served in the Indian campaign in 1S57-58 in command of the 53rd Regt., and was
present at the battle of Cawnpore on 6th Dec. 1857, and in the affair at Seraighat (mentioned in despatches. Medal).
^ Major General Burnett served with Brigadier General Wheeler's force in the Punjaub in 1848-49 (Medal).
^ Sir William Jones served with the 6ist Regt. in the Punjaub campaign of 1848-49, was present at the passage of
the Chenab, and in the battles of Sadoolaporo and Chillianwallah; after which he commanded the Regt. at the
battle of Goojerat; and he commanded a portion of Sir Walter Gilbert's field force, consisting of a troop of Bengal
Horse Artillery and the 6ist Regt. in pursuit of the enemy to the Khyber Pass in March 1849 (Medal with two Clasps,
and CB.). Commanded as Brigadier the 3rd Infantry Brigade at the siege of Delhi in 1857 and repulse of the sortie
of the 9th July; commanded the 2nd Column at the assault on the 14th Sept. during which the command of the ist
Colmnn devolved on him on the fall ofGeneral Nicholson, and he continued in command of both colmrms during the
eix days' fighting within the city until its final capture on the 20th Sept. (mentioned in despatches, Medal with Clasp).
^ Major General Hon. Alex. Hamilton Gordon served on the Quarter Master General's Staff throughout the Eastern
campaign of 1854-55, including the battles of Alma, Balaklava, and Inkerman (horse killed), and siege of Sebastopol
(Medal with four Clasps, CB., Officer of the Legion of Honor, 3rd Class of the Medjitlie, and Turkish Medal).
'*' Major General Spence served with the 31st Regt. in the Crimea from 22nd May 1855, including the siege and fall
of Sebastopol and attacks on the i8th June and 8th Sept.; commanded the Regt. from 13th Nov. (Medal with Clasp,
Knight of the Legion of Honor, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal)." Commanded the 31st Kegt. through,
out the campaign in the North of China in i860 and was present at the action of Sinho and storming of Tangku
(Medal with Clasp for the Taku Ports, and CB.). Also during the operations against the Taepings in the vicinity of
Shanghai in April and May 1862, resulting in the ta.king of the stockade at Nanhsiang, capture by escalade of the
walled cities of Kadin, Tsinpoo, Tsolin, and the fortified town of Najow, and the affair at Nanhsiang.
'"1 Major General Woosnam served the campaign of 1839 in Affghanistan, including the storm and ca-pture of
Ghnznec (Medal), and of Khelat. Also served at the siege and surrender of Mooltan in 1848-49 (Medal with Clasp).
102 gir Vincent Eyre served at the defence of Cabul dm-ing the Affgha.n insurrection there in 1841, and commanded
a detachment of Horse Artillery in two successful actions, and was severely wounded in the action of Beymaroo, on
22nd November. Mentioned in despatch ofGeneral Elphinstone, as follows:—"Throughout the whole siege the
utmost zeal was manifested by Lieut. V. Eyre, Commissary of Ordnance, who, in consequence of the paucity of
Artillery officers, on all occasions volunteered his services." Wasmadeprisoneronretreatfi-omCa,bul. Commanded
field force for relief of AiTah, and in two successful actions against the Dinapore Brigade and Jugdespore rebels
under Koer Sing, on 2nd and 12th Aug. 1857 (special thanks of Governor General in Council, Brevet of Lt.Colonel,
and CB.), also in defeat of a body of rebels on nth Sept. following (special thanks of Governor General in Council);
was Brigadier of Artillery at the first relief of Lucknow by Havelock, and occupation of the Alumbagh by Outram.
Havelock, in his despatch, says—" Brigadier Eyre has earned my best thanks ;" and Outram records, "to the gal¬
lant Brigadier Eyre, commanding the Artillery, whose victories at Arrah and Jugdespore have already given him an
European reputation, my hearty and sincere thanks are due;" and the Governor General in Council " conveys to
Major Eyre the assurance of the satisfaction with which he has received the evidence of his zeal and gallantry."
(Brevet of Colonel). Commanded Artillery Division at Alumbagh during the final siege of Lucknow, and in repulse
of attack on 15th March 1858 (Medal with two ('lasps, and a year's service for Lucknow).
"" Major General Wormald served the campaign in Affghanistan from Oct. 183S to Jan. 1S40, including the storm
and capture of Ghuznoe (Medal), and occupation of Cabul,
'"' Major General Pottinger served throughout the Persian campaign of 1856-57 as Brigade Major of Artillery,
including the storm and capture of Reshire, surrender of Bushire, night attack and battle of Koo8ha,b (Medal with
Clasp). Commanded Ahmednuggur field force during the Indian mutiny, from Got. 1857 to Feb. 1858 (C.B. and Medal).
