I Sir James Jackson served in the Peninsula, from April 1809 to the end of the war in 1814, including the battles of
Oporto, Talavera, and Bmshco; action at Pomhal Redinlia, and Foz d'Arouce (wounded), battle of Fuenie^ d'Oiior (3rd and
5th May), first siege of B.jdajoz, action at El Budon, siece and capture of Ciudud Rodrigo, siege iind capture of Badajoz,
battles of Salamanca, Vittor.a (horse shot), Maya Puss, Pampeluna, 15tli July, Pyrenees, 30th ./uly, Nivelle, Nivc, and
Bayonne. Present at Waterloo, and with the army of occupation in France. Served in India and Arabia from 1819 to 18'26,
including the capture ol Bcni-Boo-Ali, as Military Secretary to Sir Lionel Smith, and fir which service he was recom¬
mended by the Marquis of Hastings for the rank of Lieut.Colonel. He has received the War Medal with nine Clasps for
Busaco, Fueiites d'Onor, Ciudad Rodrigo, Badajoz, Salamanca, Vittoria, Pyrenees, Nivelle, and Nive.
3 Colonel Custance served in the Crimean campaign fr.im 14 Aug. 1855, including the battle of the Tchernaya, siege
and fall of Sebastopol (Medal and Clasp, and Order of theMedjidie,5th Class). Comrnaiided the Carabineers at the ontbreak
of the Sepoy Mutineers at Meerut on 10th May 1857, as also during the ciunpaiin of that year, including the battles of
the Hiiidun, 30tli and 31st May (horse killed), batt'e of Budlekaserai, 8th June (hor-o wounded), affair of 9th June, and
siege of Delhi; and commanded the Irre'jiilar Cavalry under Brigadier Grant, at the storming of the Ciiy Hlh Sept,; as
also in the subseouent operations under Brigadier Showers. Commanded a Wing of Ihi' Regiment at Ibe action of Bunkiigaon
on 8th Oct. 1858, also three squadrons in the subsequent campaign, including the actions of Maboiidispore, Rusf.oolpore,
advance ou and capture of Mitoudee, the affairs of Allygung, Bishwa, and pursuit of the rebels for three months through
Bajpootana and Central India (thanked by tiie Governor General in Council and frequently mentioned in despatches. Medal
