pointed Provisional Ens. C. M.Rifles
19th Mar. 1835, and served througli-
out the Kaffir war of that period.
He was present m the attack on the
Amatola April 1846, and served on
the Statf of Major-General Somer.

M. Ritles under Sir Harry Smith
against the rebel Boers over the
Orange River, and was in the action
at Boem Plaats 29Ih August 1848,
where he was severely wounded, and
had his horse shot under him, for which he received
the rank of Brevet-Major. Was selected by Sir Harry
Smith to form and command a corpsof Irregular Horse
("Armstrong's Horse") during the war of 1852-3,
and was on several occasions mentioned in general
orders, having commanded detachments in various
successful aifairs against the enemy, for which he re¬
ceived the rank of Brevet Lieut.-Colonel (Medal).

1 Colonel Sutton served throughout the Kaffir war of 1846 and 47 (Medal).
3 Lt.-Col. rionovan served against the Fltcani tribe in 1828 under Colonel Somerset. Commanded an
advanced post in the Neutral territory, Cape of Good Hope, in 1832 and 8.3. Served against tlie insurgent
Boers in 1845. Was actively employed throughout the wliole of the Kaffir war of 184f> and 47 (Medal), and
commanded the ailvaneed guard in forcing the passage of the Fish River Jungle from Fort Peddie to
Trompeter's Dritt in May 1846, when the troops were engaged with the whole of Pate's tribe for upwards of
three hours: previous to the action on the Gwaiiga he led as a volunteer a small party into the jungle, where
he had a personal rencontre with four armed Kaffirs (the Chief Zeto and one of his captives being of the
party), two of whom he slew single-handed. For the above services he received the brevet rank of Major.
Commanded the troops in the Sovereignty during the Kaffir war of 1851-.53: crossed the Orange River In
Feb. 1851 (effecting the passage with guns, wagons, &c., in a temporary boat constructed on the occasion)
to assist in the protection of the Albert District, and on the 28th March following, with one troop Cape
M. Rifles, one six-pounder, and a small Burgher force, defeated a large body of Tambookies and Basutos,
under the chiefs Moocrose, Umhali, and Spepere, leaving upwards of 300 of the enemy dead on the field.
