13th April succeeded to the command of the 1st Bengal Brigade, which be (•omraanded

140 Major-Gcneral Hugh Evans served in Ulyascs and Barosm from 1810 to 1815 on the
AVest India and North America station, and was engaged in the whole of the operations of the
sijuadron up the Chesapeake in 1813.
141 Major-General Lynch has received the War Medal with two Clasps for Egypt and Fuentes
d'Onor.
143 Major-GeBeral Diggle served with the 52nd Regt. in Sicily, under Sir John Moore, and
on the expedition to Gottenburgh. Subsequently he served in the Peninsula, and was present
durmg the retreat and at the battle of Corunna, as also in the action of the Coa, battle of Busaco,
and affairs when the Army fell back upon the Lines of Torres Vedras. He served also the
campaign of 1813, 14, and 15, including the two attaclcs on the fortified village of Merxem,—
in the latter of wliich ho commanded the 2nd Battalion in the advance upon Antwerp for the
bombardment of the French Fleet. He was also present at the battle of Waterloo, where
during the repulse of the French Imperial Guard he was severely wounded. He has received
the War Medal with two Clasps for Corunna and Busaco.
144 Major-General Belshes served with the 2nd Battalion 4th Regt. in the expedition to
Walcheren in 1800. On the 1st Battalion arriving in Portugal, he resigned his staff appoint¬
ment as Military Secretary at Gibraltar, and joined that Battalion then stationed at Torres
Vedras, and served with it during the whole advance from Santarem and the Lines, and was
present during several affairs; also at the battle of Fuentes d'Onor. In Dec. 1811 was appointed
Aide-de-Camp to Sir James Leith, and was present at the storming of Badajoz, battle of
Salamanca, and storming of St. Sebastian (mentioned in Dispatches). Served under Lord
Lynedoch at the passage of the Bidassoa, and was attached to Lord Hopetown at the passage
of the Adour and the blockade of Bayonne : he has received the War Medal with four
Clasps.
145 Major-General B. Orlando Jones accompanied the 3Gth to Hanover, and served the cam¬
paign of 1805-6. Embarked for the Peninsula in 1808, and served throughout the whole of that
and the following campaigns without having been absent from his duty for a single day, and was
present at the battles of Roleia and Vimiera. Attached to the Portuguese service in April 1809, and
served at the battle of Basaoo, occupation of the Lines at Lisbon, actions of Pombal, Kedinha, and
Condexia, Puente de Murcella, Casal Nova, Ceira, Guarda, Foz d'Arouce, Sabugal, and Fuentes
d'Onor, storming the forts at Salamanca (wounded), battle of "Vittoria, actions of Tolosa and
Vilja Franca (severely wounded), passage of the Bidassoa, battles of the Nivelle, Bayonne (9th
Dec), St. Jean de Luz (11th, 12th, and 13th Dec), passage of the Adour, blockade of Bayonne
and repulse of the sortie. He has received the Silver War Medal with seven Clasps.
146 Major-General Baby served the Egyptian campaign of 1801, and also in tlie Peninsula
with tlie 24th, and was present at tlie battles of Talavera, Busaco, and Fuentos d'Onor, and at the
' Arthur
expedition in
1809; subsequently in the Peninsula. He had charge of Napoleon at St. Helena when he died,
and he brought home the despatches of his death. Served afterwards in the East Indies. He
lias received the War Medal with four Clasps for Vimiera, Corunna, Vittoria, and Pyrenees
(severely wounded).
150 Major-General John Mitchell served with the 3rd Battalion of the Royals at Walcheren,
in 1809, and was present at the siege of Flushing. Subsequently in the Peninsula from 1810
to 1812, including the battles of Busaoo and Fuentes d'Onor, action of Sabugal, and those of
Massena's retreat. Accompanied the expedition to Germany, under General Gibbs in 1813.
Served as Deputy-Assistant-Quarter-Master.General in the campaign of 1814, in Holland;
and in the same situation on the staff of the army in Flanders, and afterwards at the head¬
quarters of the Army of Occupation. He has received the War Medal with two Clasps for
Busaco and Fuentes d'Onor.
151 Major-General Norcliffe served in the Peninsula with the 4th Dragoons, and was present
at the battles of Talavera, Busaco, and Albuhera; cavalry action of Usagre, and battle of Sala¬
manca, in which last he was severely wounded and taken prisoner. He has received the War
Medal with four Clasps.
