The OBJECTS of the Scciety are:
(1) To help Soldiers and Sailorn by providing (hem with the name and address of a "Friend" ii»
each parish or ward tlirouglioiit the Kingdom, to whom tht-y n.ay be commended on
discharge from the Army or Navy for aid in obtaining employment or other forms of Help
suited to their needs.
(2) In time of War to arrange for accommodation of Sick and Wounded Convalescent Soldiers
and Sailors in Temporary Convalescent Homes and Private Houses.
(3) To establish and maintain Convaksceiit Homes and Homes of Rest for disc harged Soldiers
and Sailors who are disabled and necessitous, and to contribute to the support of such
cases in their own homes, if considered necessary.
(4) To teach usetiU trades to men discharged as medically unfit, who, hy reason of theirdiEahility
consequent on their service, are unatile to take ordinary employment, and to make such,
cases as far as possible self-supporting by disposing of the work they turn out.
Employment was found during 1903-l.S for 42,02.3 discharged Soldiers and Sailors, while 85,311
were assisted with money or clothing. ti,46S Sick and Wounded Convalescents from the South
African War ha\e been sent to temporary' Convalescent Homes. The Society's Permanent Home
at Portsmouth accommodates from 20 to 2n disal'led men;- 68 Cottage Homes in Counties are
established for disabled married Soldiers of Crimean, Indian Mutiny, and other Wars, 18 men
disabled on active service are in the Home and Workshops at Brookwood, while 53 are employed
daily in the*Vorkshop5 in London learning trades.
