Rao'a Horse in theRunnin 1843-44. Served as Aide de Camp and Secretary to Sir James Outram in the Expedition to
Persia, including the march to Borazjoon, action at Khooshab, and the operations at Mohumra in 1S57 (Brevet of
JIajor, Medal with Clasp, and CJB.). Served in the Indian Mutiny campaign in 1858, and was present at the relief
of Kolapore (Medal).
■8 General J. E. Gastrell served against the Jeypore Insurgents in 1838. Also in the Bundlecund cam¬
paign of 1842-43. Served in the Punjaub campaign of 1848-49, including the passage of theChenab and adair at
Ramnuggur, battles of Chillianwallah and Goojerat, and pursuit of the Sikh Army (Medal with two Clasps). Served
also in the Sonthal campaign of 1855, and commanded one of the columns in the final beating up and Subjection of
the tribe.

^2 General H. D. Abbott served with the Nizam's Cavalry in the operations against Kumool in 1839; as
Brigade Major with the Head Quarters of the Nizam's Cavalry Division during the operations against Rohillas at
Waronee and Urnee in 1849; also ;is Brigade Major of the Force at the investment and reduction of Fort Rai (Msow),
December 1850, and at repulse of the sortie by the Arab Garrison. Served as Brigade Major of the Force at the
siege of Dharoor in January 1851. Also as Brigade Major to the Force in the engagement with the Arabs near
Aurungabad, 22nd September 1853. Commanded one of the attacking Columns on the entrenched village of Jesurint
Poora. Brigade Major to Brigadier Mayne's Force at engagement with Rohillas at Sailoor 21st Sept. 1854 (severely
wounded—sabre cut of left arm and two horses wounded under him). Commanded at Aurungabad during the
disaffection of the troops at that station in 5f ay 1857. Served with the Hyderabad Contingent Force under Colonel
Orr at the reduction of Peeplia in Malwa. Commanded the ist Hyderabad Cavalry with the Force despatched to
Mahidpoor. Commanded the right attack in the Cavalry action at Rawal in Nov. 1857. Present with the Malw.a
Field Force at the battles of Mundepore and Goodariah 21st 22nd 23rd and 24th Nov. 1857. Commanded a Brigade
of Cavalry at the repulse of the attack made on the roar (Brevet of Major). Served in the action in forcing the Pass
of Dhamonee. Piesent with the force under Sir Hugh Rose at the action at Mudenpore, and commanded the
Squadron of the ist Hj'derabad Cavalry sent in pursuit; capture of the Fort of Talbhet 12th March 1858 ; invest¬
ment and siege of Jhansie (wounded). Commanded the Hyderabad Cavalry Contingent at the battles of Ivoonch
and Golow-lee, advance on Calpee, pursuit from Calpce, liattle of Morar (horse killed); pursuit of rebels under Tantia
Topee from Gwalior, action at Jowra AUipoor (Medal with Clasp for Central India, and CB.). Commanded a Brigade
of Cavalry for the protection of the line of the Nurbudda during Tantia Topee's passage into the Deccan m
Nov. and Dec. 1858, and Jan. 1859. Commanded a P'ield Detachment in pursuit of Rohillas in the Hill country
near Gintoor in Nov. 1859.
"* General S. Richards served in the Sutlej campaign of 1845-46, and was present at the battle of Sobraon
(Medal). Served with the Bhootan Expedition in 1865-66 (Medal).
*^ General M. J. TurnbuU served with the 7thBongal Light Cavalry in Sind for two years on the frontier under
Sir Charles Napier in 1844-45 ; and in the Punjaub campaign of 1S48-49 with tlie force under General Wheeler, the
greater portion of the time as Officiating Quarter Master General to the Force (mentioned in despatches. Medal).
8^ Sir Robert Phayre served with the field force in Sind and Affghaiiistan from 1840 to 1845, commanded a
party of the Poona Irregular Horse at the actiou at Kotra, present at the battle of Meeanee—severely wounded
(mentioned in despatches. Medal). Served in the Abyssinian war in 1867-68 as Quarter Master General to the
pioneer force, and conducted the reconnaissiince of the Magd.ala position, and was present at the action of Arogee
(mentioned in despatches, CB., Aide de Camp to the Queen, and Medal). Served in the Afghan war in 1879-80 in
command of the Reserve Division and the line of communication to Quetta, and in command of the Division took
pare in the relief of Candahar (mentioned in despatches, received the thanks of both Houses of Parliament, KCB.,
and Medal).
*' General C. C. MoCallnm served with a field detachment in the Southern Mahratta Country in 1841, and was
present at the capture of the fort of Badamee.
'** General F. Young served in the suppression of the mutiny in Bengal in 1857-59, and received the thanks of
the Lieut.Governor of iJengal for a successful pursuit of a body of sepoy rebels in Beharir. June i858,on which occasion
he with nine of his men crossed the Poon Poon river in a lioodo(l state and killed with his own hands two of the
sepoy rebels who had remained behind to dispute the passage of the ford, in a hand-to-hand encounter (Medal).
