personal conflict ensued, in which Major Browne, Commandant of the 2nd Punjab Cavalry, received a severe
Bword-cut wound on the left knee, and shortly afterwards another sword-cut wound, which severed the left arm at
the shoulder, not, however, before he had succeeded in cutting down one of his assailants. The gun was prevented
from being reloaded, and was eventually captured by the infantry, and the gunner slain." In the Afghan war
of i878-7q he commanded the ist Division Peshawur Valley Field Force in the attack and capture of the Fort of AH
Musiid, the forcing of the Khyber Pass in November 1878, and subsequent operations till the end of the campaign
(received the thanks of the Government of India and of both Houses of Parliament, KCB., Medal with Clasp).
'^ General Charles Cureton servedin the Sutlej campaign in 1845-46, including the battle of Aliwal (Medal and
Clasp). Served in the Punjaub campaign of 184S-49 as Aide de Camp to Brigadier General Gureton commanding the
Cavalry Division in the action of Ramnuggur (slightly wounded); also present at the passage of the Chenab,
battle of Goojerat, and accompanied Sir W. Gilbert's Column in pursuit of the Sikh and Affghan Army, capture
of Attock, and occupation of Peshawur (Medal with Clasp). Engaged against the Mountain Tribes, North
West Frontier, in 1849, 1S52, andiSoo (Medal with Clasp). Served in suppression ofthe Indian mutiny in TS37-59,
s gainst the Sealkote mutineers at the action of Trimmoo Ghat, and against the Gogaira rebels in 1857. Commanded
Cureton's Mooltanee Regiment of Cavalry and had charge of the InteiUgonce Department throughout the campaigns
in Rohilcund and Oude in 1858-59, including the actions of Bhagwala, Negina, Bareilly, Shahjehanpore, Bunaie,
Shahabad, Bunkegaon, Mahodipore, Russoolpore, Mittowlee, and Biswa (eleven times mentioned in despatches,
published in General Orders, Medal, Brevets of Major and Lt.Colonel, and CB.).
3' Sir D. M. Probyn served on the Trans-Indus Frontier from 1852 to 1857, and was present at the opera¬
tions in the Bozdar Hills in March 1857 (Medal with Clasp). Served during the Indian mutiny campaign in
1857-58, and was present throughout the siege of Delhi, including the action of Nujjufghur and other minor en¬
gagements, a-p.d commanded the 2nd Punjab Cavalry at the assault and capture of Delhi (mentioned in
despatches) ; servedin the same command with the Flying Column under Colonel Greathed, and was present
at the action.s of Bolundshur, AUj-ghur, and Agra (four times mentioned in despatches, and Victoria Cross)
received the KiE under the following circumstances ;—" Has been distinguished for gallantry and daring through¬
out this campaign. At the battle of Agra, when his squadron (of the 2ud Punjab Cavalry) charged the rebel
infantry, he was some time separated from his men and surrounded by five or six sepoys. He defended himself from
the various cuts made at him, and before his own men had joined him had cut down two of his assailants. At
another time, in single combat with a sepoy, he was wounded in the wrist by the bayonet, and his horse also waa
6lightl.y wounded; but, though the sepoy fought desperately, he cut him down. The same day he singled out a
standard-bearer, and, in presence of a number of the enemy, killed him and captured the standard. These are
only a few ofthe gallant deeds of this brave young OSicer .—tiespatch from Major General James Hope Grant, KCB.,
&ated loth Jannarij 1858," He was also present at the action of Kanouje, the relief of Lucknow by Lord Clyde
(twice mentioned in despatches, and thanked by the Governor General), battle of Cawnpore and defeat of the
Gwalior Contingent, action of Kale Nuddee, storm and capture of Lucknow (Brevet of Major, Medal with three
Clasps, CB., and a year's service). Was permitted to retain the command of the ist Sikh Irregular Cavairy,
while on furlough, as a special reward for his services. Commanded the Regiment throughout the campaign of
I 860 in China (mentioned in despatches, Brevet of Lt.Colonel, Medal with two Clasps).
35 General B. Boyd served against the Bheels in Malwa in 1836. Sutlej campaign in 1846, including the
battle of Sobraon ;Medal). Burmese war in 1852-53 (Medal with Clasp for Pegu). Served in Bundlecund in 1858.
''General S. F. MacmuUcn served during the Punjaub campaign of 1848-49, and was present at the battles
of ChilUanwallah and Goojerat (Medal with two Clasps).
" General W. Vine served with a squadron of his Regiment in May and June 1842, with Lt.Coionel Watson's
ffield Detachment in the Saugor district, and in the campaign in the Nerbudda Territories till 26th January 1843,
was present at the affair at Simoeriah in Bundlecund; served also in the Saugor and Nerbudda Territories during
ithe mutiny in Bengal from November 1857 to February 1858 and was present at the affair at Kooahgaum ; served
with Brigadier Rowcroft's Field Force in Goruckpore and Oude districts from May to December 1858 and present
fi,t the action at Amora on the 9th June ; commanded the Outpost at Hurriah, and repulsed a very large number of
rebels 29th August 1858; present at the action at Debeeriah, and thanked on three occasions by Brigadier Row-
croft ; present at the battle of Toolsepore 23rd December 1858, was also present at the reduction of Bundlecand
under Brigadier Wheeler (Medal).
'^ General W. G. Owen was engaged in quelling disturbances in the Hill tracts of the Golcondah Zemindary.
^ General R. A. Doria served with the expedition to China in 1842-43 (Medal). Served on several expeditions
-against the Rohillas insurgents in the Deccan. Commanded the Hingoleo Field Force in the expedition against
.Mybad Khan in the Oodgheer district. Commanded a detachment of the 28th Madras Native Infantry and Police
Force at Hoshungabad against Bybod Singh and the rebels on the Mahadeo Hills, and the capture and burning of
the town of Ry'ierra in the Saugor and Ncrbudda Territories (Medal).
*" General G. Caulfeild served in the Punjaub campaign of 1848-49, including the actions of Chillianwallah and
Ooojerat (Medal with two Clasps).
*i General D. S. Dodgson served throughout the Jhoudpore Campaign of 1839. Throughout the campaign of
1842 in Afifghanistan under General Pollock, and was engaged in the actions of the 19th 23rd and 24th January at
the mouth of the Khyber Pass, forcing the Khyber Pass on the 5th April, relief of Jellalabad, and subsequent
operations in Affghanistan (Medal). Sutlej campaign in 1846, including the affair of Buddiwal and action of Aliwal
(Medal). Was Brigade Major at Benares when the Native Troops there mutinied on the 4th ,]um3 1857, and was
wounded by one of the mutineers on parade. Afterwards served as Assistant Adjutant General with Havelock's
Force and was present at the actions of Mungarwar and Alumbagh, and relief of Lucknow—wounded (Brevet of
Major); throughout subsequent defence of the Bailie Guard, Residency of Lucknow, until relieved by Lord
Clyde's Force, and engaged in repelling of all attacks, and in sorties, including the bringing in of the rear guard
and heavy guns, attack on and capture of the Hirn Khana and King's Stables (Brevet of Lt.Colonel); subsequent
•occupation of the Alumbagh from November 1857 to March 1858, and engaged in repeUing eight attacks thereon,
and capture of the enemy's guns and camp at Ghylee. Served at the fiual capture of L\icknow (frequently men¬
tioned in despatches, thanked by the Governor General, the Commander in Chief, by Sir James Outrara, and
Colonel R. Napier for his services during the several operations at Lncknow, Medal with two Clasps, a year's
service, CB., and his name recorded as deserving of honourable mention).
" General J. P. Coode served in the Burmese war in 1852-53, and was present at the capture of the Pegu Forts
<Medal).
♦' General E. D. Watson served in the Indian Mutiny campaign in 1857 (Medal). Served with the Bhootaa
Expedition in 1864-65, and was present at the capture of Buxar and Tazagaon (Modal).
♦5 Sir John Schneider commanded the Contingent, Infantry and Irregular Cavalry, of the Rajah of Sattara
dn the campaign in the Southern Maratha Country in 1844-45, including the storm and capture of the forts of
PunallaandPownghnr. Commanded the Kolapore Infantry at the suppression of the mutiny in the late 27th Bombay
Native Infantry in July and August 1857 ; also at the recapture of Kohapore in December 1857 (Medal). Served
with the Abyssinian Expeditionary Force in iS6B with the rank of Brigadier General; commanded the ist Brigade
of the ist Division which led during the advance on Magdala, and was engaged at the battle of Arogee, and in the
assault on Magdala (CB., and Medal).
*^ General D. Brown served in the Burmese war in 1852-53, and was present at the relief of Pegu and during
its subsequent investment (Medal with Clasp for Pegu).
" General A. N. Rich was employed on field service with the Kamptee Movable Column in the Jubbulpore
and Raepore districts from 19th November 1857 to 30th April 1858 and commanded a mixed detachment of Cavalry
and Infantry against the rebels at Gootea and Ruagaum (Medal).
•" General H. A. Adams commanded his Regiment at the assault and capture of Kotah; present with the
Column m pursuit of the Gwalior rebels under Tantia Topee, the Rao Saheb, and the Nawab of Banda, June to
August 1858; action of Sanganeeronthe 8th and the battle of Bunass on the 14th August 1858; action of Purtabghur
on 24th December 1858 (Brevet of Major, Medal wiih Clasp).
=» General W. W. Anderson served in the Punjaub campaiiru of 1848-49, present at the siege assault and cap-
