the Army of the Sutlej in 1846—horse wounded at the battle of Sobraon (Medal). Was thrice thanked in General
orders and despatches, and promoted to the rank of Major.
'^ General G. B. Rodney served in Spain during the Carlist war. Served with the R.M. Battalion at Eupatoria in
1854, and with the Brigade in the Crimea as Aide de Camp and Brigade Major at the battle of BalaWlava and during
the siege and fall of Sebastopol; was also at the surrender of Kiubourn (.\Iedal with two Clasps, Brevet of Major,
Knight of the Legion of Honor, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
'' General H. Hamilton joined Sir Hope Grant's Column advancing to the relief of Lucknow, in Nov. 1S57 ;
commanded a Battalion of Detachments in the skirmish before and in the attack and capture of Bunterah, as also
during the operations resulting in the reliefofthe garrison of Luckuow; commanded 78thHighlanders during the occu¬
pation and defence for three months of the Alumbagh, and in the closing operations against Lucknow ; was present
at the affair of Gailee; served in the Rohilcund campaign in April 1858, and commanded the 78th Highlanders at the
capture of Bareilly (Cii., Medal with two Clasps, repeatedly mentioned in despatches, thanked by the Governor
General in Council, also thanked in division orders by Sir James Outram " for judicious conduct when in command
of the rear-guard on the occasiou of retiring when bringing away guns cajitiu'ed from the enemy ").
^'General Hatch was present at the capture of Waukeera in 1844—mentioned in despatches and thanked by
Government. Served wiib the Persian expedition of 1856-57, and was present at the action of Resliire, surrender of
Bushire, and battle of Kooshab (mentioned in desi)atches, Brevet of Majw, Medal with Clasp).
''^General Primrose served with the 43rd Light Infinitry in the KalKrwarof 1851 53 (Medal), and was for somo
time T). A.Q.M. General of the 2nd Division; accompanied the expedition to the Orange iUvcr sovereigiit.y, and was
present at the action of the Berea. Commanded the 43rd Light Infantry on i ts march from Bangalore through Centra I
India to Calpee in 1858 (a distance 01 1,300 miles during the hottest season of the year) and throughout the varioii-s
operations in Bmidelcund, and towards the conclusion of the rebellion he commanded one of the seven Column;*
linder Brigadier Wheeler, specially ordered to clear a large district infested by numerous b.ands under rebel chiefs
(Medal). Served in the Afghan war in 1879-S0 in command of the 1st Division of the Candahar Field Force : after¬
wards commanded the Candahar Field Force, and was present in the engagement at Girishk ; commanded the
garrison of Candahar during its investment by Ayoob Khan, and was present at the battle of Candahar (mentioned
in despatches. Medal with Clasp).
^' The Duke of Grafton served in the Eastern campaign of 1854 with the Coldstream Guards, including
the siege of Sebastopol, and battles of Balaklava and Inkerman—severely wounded (Medal with three Clasps, Sai-
dinian and Turkish Medals, and 5th Class of the Medjidie).
'3 General Gardiner served in the operations at Prescoit in Upper Canada in 1838. Also in the pursuit of Tantia
Topee in Central India in 1858.
'* General Fraser acted as Staff Officer to a Detachment sent from Bombay in 1837 against the rebels in
Canara. Served also with the 6th Regiment in the Kaffir war of 1846-47 (Medal). He was commissioned in Get.
1857 to raise the 2nd Battalion 6th Regiment, and having within one month raised considerably upwards of j,ooo
recruits, was Gazetted on the 25th Nov. 1857 its Lieutenant Colonel. This Battalion embarked in May 1858 for service
at Gibraltar.
" General G.W. P. Bingham served with the 64th Regt. in the Persian campaign of 1856-57, including tlio
storm and capture of Reshire, surrender of Bushire, night attack and battle of Kooshao (Medal with Clasp). Served
in Bengal and N.W. Provinces in suppressing the mutiii.y in 1857-58; present with Havelock's Column in the actions
of Futtehpore, Aoung, Pandoo Nuddee, Cawnpore, Onao, Bu.seerutgunge (ist and 2nd), Boorbeakechowkee, and
Bithoor ; commanded a convoy with piovisions from Cawnpore to Alumbagh ; served in defence of the Alumbagh,
and afterwards in the actions at La Martiniere and the second relief of Lucknow ; commanded the Regt. during the
defence of Cawnpore and defeat of the Gwalior mutineers, as also in the actions of Kala Niuldee antl Kerkeroulie^on
General Penny bemg killed succeeded to the command of the whole Infantry Brigade—capture of Bareilly, Shahje-
hanpore, Bunnie, Mahomdie, pursuit of the enemy the following day, and occupation of Mahomdie (mentioned in
despatches, CB., Medal with Clasp).
"< General Hope served with the 71st Highlanders in the Crimean campaign from 2otli Dec. 1854, including
the siege and fall of Sebastopol, and expedition to Kertch (Medal with Clasp. Knight of the Legion of Honor, 5th
Class of the Metijidie, and Turkish Medal). Served in Central India under Sir John Michel in 1858, and was present
at the actions of Kajghur (in command of a Brigade), Mungrowlee, Sindvvaho.and Kurai {CB., Medal, and mentioned
in despatches). Commanded the 71st in the operations in Eusafzye in 1863 under Sir X. Chamberlain—wounded on
the 20th Nov. at the recapture of the Crag Piquet (mentioned in despatches, and thanked by the Commander in
Chief in India, Medal with Clasp).
'* General J. T. Walker served throughout the Punjaub campaign of 1848-49 as Field Engineer and was present
at the siege and surrender of Mooltan, the battle of Goojerat, and the subsequent pursuit of the Sikhs and Affghans
fMedal with two Clasps). For five years (1849-53) te was employed in making a military survey of the Northern
Trans Indus Frontier, from Peshawur down to Derah Ishmail Khan, during which he served as Field Engineer in
many of the encounters with the Hill Tribes on the Frontier; at the attacks of Suggow, PuUi, and Zormundi, under
Colonel Bradshaw ; in the affair of the Kohat Pass, under Sir Charles Napier; in the actions of Prangzai, Nowa-
dund, Shahkoto, and Raneezai, under Sir Colin Campbell; the attack of Boree under Colonel Boileau; and subse¬
quently, in i860, in the expedition against the Mahsood Wuzeerees, under Sir Neville Chamberlain (Medal with
Clasp). In 1857, during the mutiny of the Bengal Army, he was at first attached to the Staff of Brigadier General
Neville Chamberlain when that officer was commanding the Punjaub Jlovable Column, and subsequently accom¬
panied him to Delhi, where he was also employed during the siege as Field Engineer, and was severely wounded
(Brevet of Maior. Medal with Clasp).
" General Donovan served with the 33rd Regt. the Eastern campaign of 1854 and up to 19th April 1855,
including the battles of Abna and Inkerman, and siego of Sebastapol—severely wounded in the Trenches on the
16th of April (mentioned in despatches. Medal with three Clasps, Brevets of Major and Lt.Colonel, Knight of the
Legion of Honor, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
8' General J. A. Fuller served in the Punjaub campaign of 1848-49, including the siege and surrender of Mooltan,
and was severely wounded by the explosion of a magazine in the town (Medal with Clasp).
82 Sir William Radcbffe served the Eastern campaign of 1854-55 with the 20th Regt., including the battles of
Alma (as Aide de Camp to acting Brigadier General Horn), Balaklava, and Inkei-man, siege of Sebastopol, and
affair of the i8th June (Medal with four Clasps, Brevet of Major, Sardinian and Turkish Medals, and 5th Class of
the Medjidie). Served in the Indian Mutiny campaign of 1857-58, and was present at the actions of Chanda, Umeer-
pore, and Sultanpore, and at the siege and capture of Lucknow—wounded (sabre-cut in right hand) and twice
mentioned in despatches (Medal with Clasp, and CB.).
M Lieut.General T. H. Pakenham served with the 30th Regiment in the Eastern campaign of 1854, and was
slightly and also severely wounded at the battle of Alma (Medal with Clasp, Brevets of Major and Lt.Colonel,
Sardinian and Turkish Medals, and 5th Class of the Medjidie).
** Sir Robert Hume served the Eastern campaign of 1854, and up to the 13th Jan. 1855, and from the 29th
May to the 30th Sept. 1855, with the 55th Regt. including the battles of Alma and Inkerman (Severely wounded),
siege and fall of Sebastopol, repulse of the sortie of 26th October, and assaults of the Redan on the iSth June and
Sth Sept.—severely wounded, and mentioned in despatches (Medal with three Clasps, Brevet of Major, Knight of
the Legion of Honour, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal. Commanded the 55lh Regiment in theBhoo-
tan Expedition, includiug the attack and recapture of Dewangiri in 1865 (Medal with Clasp). Commanded the
Southern A ghanistau Field Force from November 1880 to April 1881, including the evacuation of Candahar and
Southern Atghauistau and the withdrawal of the force to India (received the thanks of Government).
85 General F. Peyton served in the 98th Regt. with the expedition to the north of China in 1842, and was pre¬
sent at the i.peratious in the Yangtsekiang River, the attack and capture of Chin Kiang Foo, and at the landing
before Nankin (Medal). Punjaub campaign of 1848-49 (Medal). Served with the Flank Companies of the 98th
Eegt. at the forcing of the Kohat Pass, in the force under Sir Charles Napier and Sir Colin Campbell lu Feb. 1850
(mentioned in despatches. Medal with Clasp). Commanded four Companies of the 98th Regt ia the Peshawur Expe¬
ditionary Force on the Kuzofzie Frontier under Sir Sydney Cotton in April and May 1858, capture of Pungtar and
Chinglee, and the afl'air with the Hindostanee fanatics on the Heights of Sittaua on 4th May (mentioned in
despatches). In the Peshawur Division during the Sepoy mutiuj' in 1858.
