1 Sir Frederick Paul Haines' services:—On the formation of the Army of the Sutlej in 1845 he was appointed to
•officiate as Military Secretary to the Commander in Chief in India, Sir Hugh Gough, and in that capacity he was
present at the battles of Moodkee and Ferozeshah (Medal and one Clasp); in the latter engagement he was severely
wounded by grape-shot at the attack on the enemy's works, his horse being killed under him at the same moment.
At the recommendation of Lord Gough he was promoted to a Company in the loth Foot, without purchase. As
Military Secretary to his Lordship he served the Punjaub campaign of 1848-40, and was present at the affair of out¬
posts at Ramnuggur, 22 Nov. 1848, and subsequent operations resulting in the passage of the Chenab, and the
l)attles of Chillianwallah and Goojerat (Brevet of Major, Medal with two Clasps). Served with the 21st Fusiliers
the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, including the battles of Alma, Balaclava, and Inkerman, and siege of Sebastopol
<Brevet of Lt.Colonel, Medal with four Clasps, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal). During the Afghan
war he directed the military operations as Commander in Chief from September 1879 to September i33o (recenred
the thanks of both Houses of Parliament).
* Lt.Colonel Whitton served in the Boer war of 1881 with the Natal Field Force, andhadchargeof a Laager during
the engagement at Lang's Nek.
' Major Browne served with the Royal Scots Fusiliers in the Zulu war of 1879 (Medal with Clasp). Served in
the Boer war in 1881 as Assistant Director of Transport with the Natal Field Force. Served with the Burmese Ex¬
pedition in 1885-86, and organised a corps of Mounted Infantry (mentioned in despatches, Mtndal with Clasp).
* Major Hewat served as Adjutant of H.M. Hospital Ship Victor Emanuel off Cape Coast Castle, and was
also emplo.yed on the river Volta during the Ashanti war of 1874 (Medal). Served in the Burmese Expedition in.
1883-87 with the 2nd Battalion Royal Scots Fusiliers (Medal witb Clasp).
' Major Douglass served in the Ashanti war from the 30th November, 1873, in command of the Bonny company
of Wood's Regiment, and was present at the battles of Amoaful and Ordahsu, and the capture of Coomassie (pro¬
moted Captain, Medal with Clasp).
* Major Willoughby served with the 21st Fusiliers in the Zulu war of 1879, and afterwards in the operations
against Sekukuni, and was present at the storming of the stronghold (slightly wounded. Medal with Clasji).

Adjutant of the Garrison of Pretoria daring its investment.
