1 Sir John Michel was nominated a CB. after the termination of the Kaffir war in 1853, in consideration of his
distinguished services in the Kaffir wars of 1S46-47 and of 1851-53 (Medal). Was nominated to the 2nd Class
of the Medjidie for sei-vice with the late Turkish Contingent. Served in the Indian campaign in 1858-59 in com¬
mand of the Mhow Field Force, and defeated the rebels under Tantia Topee at Beorora, taking 27 guns; subse¬
quently actively engaged in pursuing the fugitive bands (KCB., and Medal). Commanded a Division of the Army
in the campaign of i860 in China, including the action at Sinho (Medal with Clasp for the Taku Ports).
^ Major Mackenzie served with the 86th Kegiment with the Malwa, Nerbudda, and Central India Field Forces
in 1857-58; present at the siege and capture of Dhar, operations at Mnndesore and battle of Goodaria, siege storm
and capture of Chandaree, and also of the fortress of Jhansi, action of Koonch, battle of Gowlowlee, and operations
before and capture of the town and Fort of Calpeo (Modal svith Clasp).
■* Lt.Colonel Brockman entered the Royal Navy in 1S47 ; was actively employed during the Kaffir war of i8si-=;2
(Medal). Served in H.M.S. Hermes at the first attack on the stockades in the Rangoon river, was present at the
attack and taking of Martaban and afterwards at the storm and cajiture of Rangoon nth April 1852 (Medal with
Clasp for Pegu). Afterwards was in several actions with pirates on the coast of China. Operations against rebel
tribes in Guzerat in 1857. Served with the 86th Regiment in the Central India Field Force under Sir Hugh Rose
from Feb. 1858 to Jan. 1859, including the capture of the strong Hill Fort of Chandaree ; siege storm and cap¬
ture of Jhansi, action of Koonch, operations before Calpee, battle of Gowlowloe, capture of Calpee, battle of Morar,
and capture of Gwalior ; captured a battery of 3 guns on tho Heights before Gwalior nndtumed them on the enemy ;
commanded a Detachment of 100 men forming part of a Plying Column sent in pursuit of Ferozo Shah and Tantia
Topee (mentioned in despatches, Medal with Clasp, and Brevet of Major).
5 Major Crofton served with the 9th Lancers in suppression of the Indian mutiny in 1858-59, and was present at
the afifair of Kumdakoti (Medal).
« Captain Cutbill served throughout the New Zealand war of 1863- 6, and was present with the Thames
expedition and with that of the Waikato (Medal).
