Medjidie, and CB.). Sir Edward Hamley is the author of "The Operations of War," a work that may confidently be
characterized as one of the most invaluable modern military books extant—"there exists nothing to compare
with it in the English language for enlightened, scientific, and sober teaching in the general art of war : " vide

and was present at the affairs of Bulganac and M'Kenzie's Farm, the battles of Alma, Balaklava, and Inkerman,
capture of Balaklava, siege and fall of Sebastopol (Medal with four Clasiis, Brevets of Major and Lt.Colonel,
Sardinian and Turkish Medals, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and CB.); was also present with the Turkish Army under
Omar Pasha during the operations at Rudchuck and Giurgevo, in the summer of 1854, and has received the Gold
Medal for the campaign on the Danube, awarded to him by the Turkish Government.

"* Colonel Reillyweut to the Crimea as Aide de Camp to Brigadier General Fox Strangways; served in the
Trenches during the winter of 1854-55 and was appointed Adjutant to the Siege Train in February 1835, and subse¬
quently Brigade Major; was present at the bombardments of the gth April, 6th and 17th .June, 17th August, and
Stli September. After the fall of Sebastopol he was appointed Deputy Assistant Quarter Master General at Head
Quarters (three times mentioned in despatches. Medal with Clasp, CM., Brevet of ilajor. Knight of the Legion of
Honor, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal). Appointed to accompany the Prussian Army in the cam¬
paign of 1866. Appointed Military Attache to the French Army in 1870, and being attached to the Army of the
Loire, was present at the various operations around Orleans including the battles of the 2nd (battle of Artenay) 3rd
and 4th December, which resulted m the evacuation of the city, when he was taken prisoner by the Gcrm/m Army
and sent to England (^Coinmander of the Legion of Honor, and Medal). Cominauded the Royal Artillery in
South Africa, and was present in the field with the army during the latter part of the campaign in Zululand in
1879 (Medal with Clasp).
"- Colonel Godby served in the Crimean campaign from May 1855, including the siege and fall of Sebastopol,
m the Trenches with the siege train, including the bombardments of 6th and 17th June (Medal with Clasp, Brevet
of Major, and Turkish Medal).
8' Colonel D. Sarsfield Greene sei-ved in India as Aide de Camp to Sir John Dupuis in 1857-58; commanded
the Field Artillery at the action of Pandoo Nuddee, and also at the several engagements on the 27th and 28th
November; was present at the operations round Cawnpore, and its relief by Lord Clyde; present at the battle of
Cawnpore on the 6th December 1857 (four times mentioned in despatches. Brevet of Major, Medal, and CB.). Was
selected by Lord Strathnairn to command one of the Columns during the Fenian outbreak in Ireland.
8* Major General Barry served in the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, including the battles of Alma, Balaklava, and
Inkerman, and siege and fall of Sebastopol (Medal with four Clasps, Brevet of Major, Sardinian and Turkish
Medals, and 5th Class of the Medjidie). Served in India in 1857-58, including the relief of the Garrison of Lucknow,
battle of Cawnpore, siege and capture of Lucknow—severely wounded (twice mentioned in despatches. Brevet of
Lt.Colonel, Medal with two Clasps). Served with the expedition to China in i860, and was present at Sinho,
Tangku, capture of Taku Forts, actions near Tangchow, and surrender of Pekin {CB. Medal with two Clasps).
'^'^ Colonel Elgee was present at the capture of Canton in Dec. 1857 (Brevet of Major, Medal with Clasp).
^^ Colonel Hay sei'ved as Assistant Adjutant General of Artillery with the expedition to China in i860, and was
present at Sinho, Tangku, capture of Taku Forts, actions near Tangchow, and surrender of Pekin (Brevet of Major,
Medal with two Clasps).
*" Colonel Spurway served in the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, including the battle of Inkerman, siege and
fall of Sebastopol (Medal with two Clasps, Brevet of Major, Knight of the Legion of Honor, and Turkish Medal).
"' Major General Michell served in the Eastern campaign of 1854, and up to May iS55,includingtho battles of Alma
and Balaklava, and siege of Sebastopol (Medal with three Clasps, Brevet of Major, Sardinian and Turkish iledals,
and 5th Class of the Medjidie). Served in the Indian campaign of 1857-58, including the storm and capture of
Moangimge, siege and capture of Lucknow, and commanded the Royal Horse Artillery at the affair of Tigree,
relief of Azimghur, action near Azimutghur, operations in the Jungle, and capture of Jugdespore, attack and
capture of Tiroul (four times mentioned in despatches. Brevet of Lt.Colonel, Medal with Clasp, and CB.).
5" Colonel Bedingfeld served with the expedition to China in i860, and was present at the capture of the Taku
Forts and surrender of Pekin (Brevet of Major, Medal with two Clasps).
" Colonel Govan served with the expedition to China in i860, and was present at Sinho, Tangku, and capture of
Taku Forts (Brevet of Major, Medal with Clasp). Also served in the operations agamst the Taepings in the
vicinity of Shanghai in April and May 1862.
52 Colonel Ingilb.y served in the Eastern campaign of 1854, and up to March 1855, including the affairs of Bul-
ganao and M'Kenzie's Farm, the battles of Alma, Balaklava, and Inkerman (severely wounded), the siege of
Sebastopol, and repulse of the sortie on the 26th October 1854 (Medal with four Clasps, Brevet of Major, Sardinian
and Turkish Medals, and 5th Class of the Medjidie).

the affairs of Saragunge on 23rd and 29th of July, also commanded the Artillery in the actions at Sultanpore on
13th and 28th Aug. 1858 (throe times mentioned in despatches. Brevet of Lt.Colonel, Medal with Clasp, and CB.).
