29-38 War Services of the General Officers.
Sebastopol and sortie of 22nd March (twice mentioned in despatches. Medal with Clasp, Brevet of Major, Knight
of the Legion of Honor, 5th Glass of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
^^ Major General F. G. T. Dashon served with the 22nd Regt. in Scinde, and was present at the battle of
Hyderabad (Medal). He sei-ved also the campaign in the Southern Mahratta country in 1S44-45, and was present
at'the investment a-nd capture of the Ports of Panulla and Pownghur, as also in the operations against the Forts
of Munnahur and Munsontosh in the Southern Concan. Landed in the Crimea with the 48th Regt. on 21st April
1855, and served at the siege and fall of Sebastopol, and commanded a portion of the Regiment detached on duty
in the Dockyard from 14th January to 14th March 1856 (Medal vrith Clasp, Brevet of Major, 5th Glass of the
Medjidie, and Turkish Modal).
2"i> Major General G. D. Pitt in 1S59 raised, organized and trained the Victorian Volunteer Force—for this service he
received the thanks of Her Majesty's Government. On the renewal of the war in New Zealand in 1863 he was, on the
recommendation of Lt.General Sir Duncan Cameron, commissioned by the Colonial Government to raise Local
Corps to aid the troops, and in a very short time succeeded in raising upwards of 2,000 men—for this service he was
promoted to an Unattached Majority. In Dec. 1863 he was appointed Assistant Military Secretary to Sir Duncan
Cameron, and served in the Waikato campaign of 1863-64, including the attacks on Orakau and the Gate Pah : also
in the Wanganui campaign of 1864-65, including the actions of Nukumaru and Kakaramia (mentioned in despatches,
Brevet of Lt.Colonel). On the departure of Sir Duncan Cameron he was appointed Assistant Military Secretary to
Major General Chute, and served throughout the Wanganui and Taranaki campaign of 1865-66, "including the
assaults on Okotukn, Putaki, Otapawa, and Waikoto, and the march through the Taranaki forest (mentioned in
despatches, CB., and Medal).
571 MajorGeneral G. N. Boldero served with the 21st Fusiliers in the Eastern campaign of 1854 and up to 27th
April 1855, including the battles of Alma and Inkerman (severely wounded in left arm) and siege of Sebastopol
(Medal with three Clasps, Brevet of Major, Sardinian and Turkish Medals, and 5th Class of the Medjidie).
272 Major General John Peel served with the 34th Regt. in the Crimea from Feb. 1855, including the siege and
fall of Sebastopol and capture of the Quarries—severely wounded (Medal with Clasp, Brevet of Major, 5th Glass
of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
273 Major General L. E. Knight served with the 17th Lancers in the Central Indian campaign in 1858-59, including
the action of Burode (Medal).
-'* Major General William Earle served with the 4gth Regiment throughout the Eastern campaign of 1854-55,
including the battles of Alma and Inkerman, siege of Sebastopol, sortie of 26th Oct., and assault of the Redan on
i8th June (Medal with three Clasps, Sardinian and Turkish Medals, and 5th Class of the Medjidie).
275 Major General P. Robertson-Ross served as an Ensign in the Cape Mounted Rifles during the KafHr war of 1850-51
(Medal), was appointed to the local rank of Captain when in command of a corps of irregular Cavalry called
" Armstrong's Horse; " in which capacity he was engaged in manj' successful affairs against "the enemy, including
the action against Seyola's tribe, i6th April 1S51, where he had his horse killed under him ; and more particularly at
the combined attack on the Amatolas 28th June 1851, when he commanded a detached body of Cavalry ; was six
times thanked in General orders, and three times specially mentioned in the despatches of the Commander in Chief,
and promoted to a Lieutenancy in the 4th Regiment. Served throughout the Eastern campaign of 1854-55 with the
4th Regt., including the battles of Alma and Inkerman, siege and fall of Sebastopol; specially mentioned in the
despatches of Lord Raglan for having, when in command of a detachment of the 4th Regt. in the advanced trench
before Sebastopol, repulsed two attacks of the Russians on the night of the 22nd Nov. 1854 ; and again thanked in
Lord Raglan's despatch for his conduct at the attack and occupation of the Cemetery, on which occasion he was
Aide de Gamp to Sir William Eyre (Modal with three Clasps, Brevet of Major, Knight of the Legion of Honor, 5th
Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
