19 War Services of the General Officers.
the Army of the Sutlej in 1846—horse wounded at the battle of Sobraon (Medal). Was thrice thanked in General
orders and despatches, and promoted to the rank of Major.
*' Lt.General Inglis served in the Crimea from 23rd Sept. 1854, including the battles of Balaklava and Inkerman
(commanded the 57th Begt. after Captain Stanley was killed, and was honoui'ably mentioned in Lord Raglan's
despatch), siege and fall of Sebastopol, assault of the Redan on i8th June, and expedition to Kinboui-n (lledal with
three Clasps. Brevets of Major and Lt.Colonel, CB., Knight of the Legion of Honor, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and
Turkish Medal).
" Lt.General Shadwell served with the 98th Regt.on the China expedition in 1842, and was present at the attack
and capture of Chin Kiang Foo, and investment of Nankin (Medal). He served as extra Aide de Camp to Sir Colin
Campbell in the Punjaub campaign of 1848-49 and was present at the battles of Chillianwallali and Goojerat (Medal
with two Clasps). Accompanied Sir Colin Campbell as Aide de Camp to the Crimea, and was present in that
capacity at the battle of the Alma. Acted as Assistant Quarter Master General to the troops in front of Balaklava
previously to and during the action of the 2sth Oct. 1854. On the 29th of the same month succeeded to that appoint¬
ment and held it till the breaking up of the Army in 1856. On the 26th May 1855 was transferred to the isi Division,
and suljsoquently to the Highland Division (Medal with three Clasps for Ainia, Balaklava. and Sebastopol; Brevetc
of Major and Lt.Colonel, Knight of the Legion of Honor, Sardinian and Turkish Medals, and 5tli Class of tlie Medjidie).
®^Lt General Foster served with the i6th Lancers during the camjiaign in Affghanistan under Lord Keano,
including the siege and capture of Ghuznee (Medal). He sen-ed also at the battle of Maharajpore, gth Deo. 1S43
(Bronze Star); and in the campaign on the Sutlej in i8.i6, including the battles of Budcuwal, ^Miwal (as Aide de
Camp to Brigadier Cureton), and Sobraon (Medal and Clasp).
5* Lt.General Call served with the 18th Royal Irish throughout the first China expedition (Meda-1), and present
at the first capture of Chusan, attack of the Forts of the Bocca Tigris, stormijig of the Height anil Forts at Cantor.,
and destruction of the forts and capture of Amoy; and employed on the Staff in 1841-42 as Sub Assisli^nt Com¬
missary General. Served throughout the Burmese war of 1852-33 (Medal with Clasp for Pegu) as Brigade Major
to the ist Bengal Brigade, and for a part of the period as Assistanr Adjutant General of the Pegu Division, and was
present at the destruction of the stockades at the entrance of the Rangoon River, at the operations before, and
subsequent storming of, the Citadel of Rangoon, at the capture of Prome, and repulses of the enemy from that
position. Served in the Crimea from Dec. 1854, includingthe siege and fall of Sebastopol (Medal with Clasp, Brevet
of Lt.Colonel, Sardinian and Turkish Medals, and 5th Class of the Medjidie).
'^ Lt.General Bruce served with the 74th Highlanders throughout the Kaffirwar of 1S51-53 (Medal, and Brevet
of Major).
5S Lt.General Shipley served in the Eastern campaign of 1854, including the battles of Alma and Inkerman
(severely wounded), siege of Sebastopol, and sortie on 26th October (Medal with three Clasps, Brevet of Major, Sar¬
dinian and Turkish Medals, and 5th Class of the Medjidie). Served in the Indian N.W. Frontier war of 1S63 with
the Eusnl'zye Field Force in command of the ist Brigade from the 4th to the 14th December, and of the ist Battalion
7th Fusiliers, at the attack a:id storming of the Conical Hill, and the capture of Umiieyla (mentioned in despatches,
CB., Medal with Clasp).
'7 Lt.General CoUings served with the 33rd Regt. in the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, including the battles of
Alma and Inkermim, siege and fall of Sebastopol, and assault on the 18th June (Medal with three Clasps, Brevet
of Lt.Colonel, Knight of the Legion of Honor, Sardinian and Tui'kish Medals, and 5th Class of the Medjidie). Com¬
manded a Brigado in the Abyssinian campaign in 1868 (mentioned in despatches, CB., and Medal).
'^ Lt.General R. Budd served with the 14th Regiment in the Crimean campaign from loth January to Juno
1855, including the siege of Sebastopol (Medal with Clasp, ;th Class of tlieMedjidio, and Turkish Medal).
^^ Lt.General H. Hamilton joined Sir Hope Grant's Column advancing to the relief of Lucknow, in Nov. 1B57 ;
commanded a Battalion of Detachments in the skirmish before and in the attack and capture of Bunterah, as also
during the operations resulting in the relief of the garrison of Lucknow; commanded 78thHighlanders during the occu¬
pation and defence for three months of the Alumbagh, and in the closing operations against Lncknow ; was present
at the affair of Gailee ; served in the Rohilcimd campaign in Ajnil 1S5S, and commanded the 78th Highlanders at the
capture of BareiLj'(CJ?., Medal with two Clasps, repeatedly mentioned in despatches, thanked by the Governor
General in Council, also thanked in division orders b^' Sir James Outram " for judicious conduct when in command
of the rear-guard on the occasion of retiring when bringing away guns captured from the enemy ").
'"' Lt.General T. Addison served the campaign in Affghanistan and Beloochistan in 1839, including the
storm and capture of Ghuznee (Medal) and of Khelat. Served as Major of Brigade throughout the campaign in
the Southern Mahratta country in 1844 (including the storm of Punella,—wounded, and named in despatches as
one of the first on the breach), and that in the Concan in 1845. Served in the Katlir war of 1851, and was severely
wounded on 14th October on Waterkloof Heights (Medal, and Brevet of Major). Received the Brevet of Lt.
Colonel on 24th July 1857 for special services under Sir George Grey, Governor of the Cape of Good Hope. Com¬
manded the ist Battalion 2nd Queen's Royals throughout the campaign of i860 in North China, including the
actions of the 12th and T4th August, the taking of The Taku Forts, the actions of the i8th and 21st September,
and advance on Pekin (Medal with two Clasps, and CB.).
1™ Lt.General M'Intyre served in the Persian campaign of 1857; commanded the 78th Highlanders on the expe¬
dition to Borazjoou, in the night attack and in the battle of Kooshab, and present at the bombardment of Mohumrah
(mentioned in desjiatchcs. Medal with Clasp). Accompanied Havelock'sForce in Sejit. for the relief of Lucknow,
and was in the actions during that advance; on the morning that the force entered the City, was thrown into the
Alumbagh with 250 men for its defence from 25th Sept. to 7th Oct., was surrounded b}' the enemy and all communi¬
cation cut off, was then reinforced from Cawnpore by 250 men and two guns, and again on 25th Oct. by 500 men and
four guns; held the position, still suiTOunded by the enem3', for 52 days, until relieved by the approach of the Com¬
mander in Chief's Force (horse shot on 25th Sept., mentioned in despatches). Proceeded with the Commander in
Chief's Force for the relief of the garrison in the Residency, and commanded the advance-guard in the attacks on
the Dilkoosha and La Martiniere (mentioned in despatches as "conspicuous" in attack on La Martiniere). Was
with Outram's Force during the re-occupation for three months of the Alumbagh, and present at the repulse of all
the attacks made on that position. Present with Brigadier Campbell's Force in the third advance on Lucknow, and
In the operations of that force until the final capture of the City (Medal with two Clasps, CB., and a year's service
for Lucknow).
1"* Lt.General Primrose served with the 43rd Light Infantry in the Kaffir warof 1851-53 (Medal),and was forsome
time D.A.Q.M. General of the 2nd Division; accompanied the expedition to the Orange River sovereignty, and was
prei^ent at the action of the Berea. Cormnanded the 43rd Light Infantry on its march from Bangalore through Central
India to Calpee in 1858 (a distance of 1,300 miles dui'ing the hottest season of the year) and throughout the various
operations in Bundelcund, and towards the conclusion of the rebellion he commanded one of the seven Columns
under Brigadier Wheeler, specially ordered to clear a large district infested by numerous bands under rebel chiefs
(Medal).
