1858, when he commanded the Left Column of attack on and occupation of the Iron Bridge from nth to 15th March
and was mentioned in the despatches ; commanded a Column in the chain of operations by Lord Clyde against the
rebels in Dec. 1858 and Jan. 1859, when they were driven from Oude into the Nepaul territory (Medal with two Clasps,
and CB.).
"' Lt.General the Honourable Leicester Smj^h served in the Kaffir war of 1832-53 (Medal) ; also at the battle of
Berea. Served the Eastern campaign of 1854-55 as Assistant Military Secretarj' to Lord Raglan, and aftoi-wards to
General Simpson (Medal with Clasps, Brevets of Major and Lt.Colonel, Knight of the Legion of Honor, Sardinian
and Turkish Medals, and 5th Class of the Modjidie).
'^Lt.General Stepheuson served in the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, including tli6 battles of Alma, Bala-
klava, and Inkerman, siege of Sebastopol and sortie on the 2()th October. Was Military Secretary to the Com¬
mander in Chief in the Crimea from early ia July until Nov. 1855 (Medal with four Clasps, Knight of the Legion
of Honor, 4th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal). Served as Assist.Adjutant General to the expeditionary
force in China from March 1857 to 14th Feb. i860, and present at the capture of Canton in Dec. 1857; and served
as Deput.y Adjutant General to the force under Sir Hope Grant from 14th Feb. i860 to 16th March 1861, present at
the storming and capture of the Taku Forts, the actions of the 18th and 21st Sept., and subsequent advance on
Pekin (CB., Brevet of Colonel, Medal with three Clasps).
'■* Lt.Genoral AVhitmcre served in the Eastern campaign of 1854 a,s Aide de Camp to Sir George Brown, including
the battles of Alma (horse shot) and Inkerman, and siege of Sebastopol (Medal with three Clasps, Knight of
the Legion of Honor, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
'■^ Lord Alexander Russell served with the ist Battalion Ritle Brigade in the Kaffir war of i8s2-S3as D.A.Q.M.G.
to the ist Division, and was present at the battle of Berea—mentioned in General Orders (Medal, and Brevet of
Major). Served also in the Crimea from the nth July 1855, including the siege and fall of Seba.'itoi)ol, and com¬
manded the ist Battalion from the 25th October 1855 until the evacuation of the Crimea (Medal with Clasp, Brevet
of Lt.Colonel, Sardinian and Turkish Medals, and 5th Class of the Medjidie).
'■^ Sir Gai-net Woteeley served with the 80th Regiment in the Burmese war of 1852-53 (Medal for Pegu), was with the
expedition under Sir John Cheape against the robber chief Myattoon, and severely wounded when leading the storming
party against the chief's stronghold on the 19th March (mentioned in despatches). Landed in the Crimea with the
90th Light Infantry on 5th Dec. 1854, and employed in the Trenches as Acting Engineer until Sebastopol was taken ;
was engaged in the assault and defence of the Quarries on 7th June, and on duty in the Trenches at the attack
of the i8th June ; severely wounded in a sortie 30th August, when in charge of the advanced sap—several times
mentioned in despatches (Medal with Clasp, Knight of the Legion of Honor, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish
Medal). Served in the Indian campaigns of 1857-59, ^'Hd was present at the relief of Lucknow, defence of the Alum-
bagh by Outram, with the several engagements there, siege and capture of Lucknow, subsequently as D. A. Q. M.
Huneral to Grant's Division and with it at the afiiiir of Baree, action at Nawabgungc, and all the others fought by
'iiit force (repeatedly mentioned in despatches. Brevet of Lt.Colonel, Medal with Clasp). Served in the war of i860
n China upon the Quarter Master General's Staff, and was present at the assavilt of the Taku Forts, and in all the
engagements throughout the campaign (Medal with two Clasps). Commanded the Expedition sent in 1870 from
Canada to the Red Hiver Territory for the suppression of the Rebel Government established at Fort Garry against
the Queen's authority, and was created a Knight of St. Michael and St. George for his services upon that occasion.
Was Governor and Commander of the Forces on the Gold Coast during the Ashanti war of 1873-74: received the
thanks of both Houses of Parliament, promoted to be Major General for distinguished service, nominated OCM&.,
and IlCB. (Medal with Clasp). Was sent to South Africa in June 1879 as Governor and High Commissioner of
Natal and lands adjacent, with local rank of General. Completed the subjugation of the Zulus and brought the
Zulu war to a conclusion ; afterwards overpowered Sekukuni's hostile nation and destroyed their stronghold; and
finally subdued the disaffected Boers and completed the annexation of the Transvaal (Medal with Clasp, OCB).
"' Lt.General Mills, as a Field OIHcer of the 52nd Light Infantry, was attached to the Light Division of the
Army before Sebastopol during the campaign of 1855, from April until the fall of the place (Medal with Clasp,
and Turkish Medal).
"* Sir J ohn Josia'u Hort served throughout the Easterncampaign of 1854-55 with the 4thRegt., including the battles of
Alma and Inkerman, siege and fall of Sebastopol (Brevet of Lt.Colonel, Medal with three Clasps, Sardinian and
Turkish Medals, and 5th Class of the Medjidie).
"5 Lt. General Rainey served with the 49th Regt. throughout the operations in China (Medal), commencing with
": le first taking of Chusan, and terminating with the demonstration before Nankin, including the storm and capture of
■ I le heights above Canton, attack and capture of Amoy, second capture of Chusan, attack and capture of the heights
of Chinhae, occupation of Ningpo, repulse of the night attack on Ningpo, attack and capture of the enemy's
intrenched camp on the heights of Segoan, attack and capture of Chapoo, Woosung, and Chin Kiang Foo. Served
with the 6ist Regt. at the siege assault and capture of Delhi, and commanded the Wing engaged at the action of
Nuijufghur (Medal with Clasp and CB ).
'1 Lt.General R. W. Lacy landed with the 56th Regt. in the Crimea on the 25th Aug. 1855, was present at the
siege and fall of Sebastoyiol and the final assault (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal).
^^ Sir Frederick F. Maude served the Gwalior campaign of 1843-44 as Adjutant of the Buffs, and was present at
the battle of Punniar on 29th Deo. 1843—horse shot under him (Bronze Star). Served in the Crimean campaign from
April 1855, including both as.sa.ults on the Redan on iSth June, in reserve, and 8th September, and siege and fall of
Sebastopol. Commanded the Buffs from 3rd August till the 8th Sept., on which date he commanded the covering and
ladder party of the 2nd Division, furnished by his regiment, at the final assault on the Redan—dangerously wounded,
mentioned in despatches. For his conspicuous and devoted bravery on this occasion he was recommended by his
Regiment for, and received, the Victoria Cross (Medal with Clasp, Brevet of Lt.(Jolonel, CB., Knight of the Legion
of Honor, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal). Commanded the 2nd Division Peshawur Valley Field
-Force during the campaign of 1878-79 in Afghanistan (mentioned in despatches, thanks of both Houses of Parlia-
:iient, unAKCB.).
*^ Lt.GeneralE.H. Maxwell served the Eastern campaign of 1854-55 with the 88th Regt., including the battles
)f Alma and Balaklava, siege and fall of Sebastopol, attack of the Quarries on the 7th June, and of the Rodan on
the i8th June and 8th September—brought the 88th out of action, and was mentioned in despatches (Medal with
three Clasjis, Brevet of Lt.Colonel, Knight of the Legion of Honor, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
Served also during the suppression of the Indian mutiny in 1857-58, including the operations at Cawmpore from
;;6th Nov. to 6th Dec. 1857, siege of Lucknow in March 1858, and siege of Calpee (Medal with Clasp for Central India).
''* Lt.Genera! Walter served throughout the Kaffir campaign of 1846-47 as Adjutant of the 90th Light In¬
fantry, and Field Adjutant of the ist Division (Medal). Served with the 53rd Regiment in the Punjauli cam¬
paign in 1849, and was present at the battle of Goojerat (Medal with Clasp). Campaign of 1851-52 against the Hill
Tribes on the Peshawur frontier. Served with the 35th Regiment in the Indian campaign of 1857-59; commanded
the Arrah Field Force in the actions of Sirthooa, Bramineegunge, Ramjioorperoiora Jemaon. and Karecsath;
Eubsequently a Column in the operations in Shahabad, including the actions before Nonoodhce (twice mentioned
in despatches, CB., and Medal).
*= Lt.General Thackwell served with the 22nd Regt. in the campaign in Sind, and was present at the battle of Hy¬
derabad (Medal). Also the campaign of 1844-45 in the Southern Mahratta Country, including the investment and
capture of Forts PanuUa and Pownghur. Served the Eastern campaign of 1854-55 as Brigade Major to ist Brigade
2nd Division—incluchng the battles of Alma and Inkerman (horse shot), siege of Sobastopol and repulse of the
sortie on 26th October. On 4th August 1855 he was appointed Assistant Adjutant General to the 3rd Division and
3ei-ved with it until broken up in April 1856 (Medal with three Clasps, Brevets of Major and Lt.Colonel, Knight of
