5 War Services of the General Officers.
in South Africa from January 1854 to July i860. Received the thanks of the Irish Government in 1S67 for hia
services as Deputy Adjutant General during the suppression of the Fenian outbreak. While commanding the
troops in Mauritius, he vfas twice sworn in and acted as Governor in 1870 and 1871.
'■'' Lt.General Jeffreys served with the 88th Regt. the Eastern campaign of 1854, and was present at the battles
of Alma and Inkennan (wounded—at the latter he commanded the Regt.) and the siege of Sebastopol (Medal with
three Clasps, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
'* The Hon. Sir Francis Colborne served in Canada in suppression of the rebellion in 1838-39 and was
present in the action of St. Eustache. Served throughout the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, as Assistant Quarter Master
General to the 3rd Division, including the battles of Alma, Balaklava, and Inkerinan, siege and fall of Sebastopol
(Medal with four Clasps, Brevet of Lt.Colonel, CB., Knight of the Legion of Honor, sth Class of the Medjidie, Sar¬
dinian and Turkish Medals). Commanded the Perak E,\pedition in 1875-76 (Medal with Clasp).
°" Lt.General the Hon. St. George Foley served in the Eastern campaign in 1854-56, as Assistant Commissioner
at the Head Quarters of the French Army, and was present at the battles of Alma, Balaklava, Inkerman, and
Tchernaya, the siege and fall of Sebastopol (Medal with four Clasps, Brevet of Lt.Colonel, CB., Officer of the Legion
of Honor, 4th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal). Served as Military Secretary to the expeditionary force
in China from March 1857 to Feb. i860; was present at the capture of Canton in Dec. 1857 (Brevet of Colonel), and
other affairs in the neighbourhood. Served throughout the campaign as British Commissioner at the Head Quar¬
ters of the French Army in China from Feb. i860 to March 1861, and was present at the storming and capture of
the Taku Forts, the actions of the i8th and 21st September—in the latter commanded 200 French Mounted Artil¬
lerymen, 50 Chasseurs dAfrique, and a squadron of Fane's Horse—horse shot (mentioned in French despatches,
and made Commander of the Legion of Honor), and subsequent advance on Pekin (good service pension. Medal
with three Clasps).
21 Lt.Genei-al Elmhirst served with the 9th Regt. the campaign of 1842 in Affghanistan, including the forcing
of the Khyber Pass, capture of Mamokail, affair of Pi(|uets in the Tezeen Valley (mentioned in despatches as having
distinguished himself in a charge on the enemy); forcing the Tezeen and Hoftkuttul Passes, and capture of Istalifl
—mentioned in despatches as having captured a gun, and turned it with effect agninst the enemy (Medal). Also
served in the Crimea from Sth June 1S55, including the siege and fall of Sebastopol and assault of "the Cemetery ou
18th June (Medal with Clasp, Knight of the Legion of Honor, Turkish Medal, and 5th Class of the Modjidie).
-" Lt.General Taylor served the Eastern campaign of 1854-55 (save the interval between 9th Feb. and 15th
June 1855) with the 79th Highlanders, including the battles of Alma and Balaklava, and full siege of Sebastopol
(Medal with three Clasps, 5th Chiss of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal). Commanded the 79th Highlanders from
Feb. to i6th Nov. 1858 in the Indian campaign. Including the siege and capture of Lucknow, and commanded a
Brigade in Oude from Nov. 1858 to Jan. 1859 (mentioned in despatches, CB., Brevet of Colonel, Medal with Clasp).
^'i Lt General Hon. A. E. Hardinge served as Aide de Camp to Lord Hardinge throughout the camilaign on the
Sutlej in 1845-46, and was present in the battles of Moodkee, Ferozeshah (horse shot), and Sobraon (Medal and two
Clasps). Served the EasteiTi campaign of 1854-55, first as D.A.Q.M. General to the ist Division, and at Head
Quarters, and from the spring of 1855 as Assist. Qr. Master General at Head Quarters, including the battles of
Alma, Balaklava, and Inkermau, and siege of Sebastopol (Brevet of Major, Medal with four Clasps, CB., Knight of
the Legion of Honor, Turkish Medal, and 5th Class of the Medjidie ; promoted to 2nd Class of the Medjidie in 1876).
2» lit General Somerset served with the Rifle Brigade in the Kaffir war of 1852-53 (Medal). Also the Eastern cam¬
paign of 1854-55, including the battles of Alma, Balaklava, and Inkerman, siege and fall of Sebastopol (Medal with
four Clasps, Knight of the Legion of Honor, 5th Class of the Medjiche, and Tm'kish Modal).
2^ Sir Patrick Leonard MacDougall was employed on particular service in the Crimea, acting on the Quarter Master
General's Staff to the Kertch expedition (Medal with Clasp for Sebastopol, and Turkish Medal). Major General
MacDougall is the author of the following important and valuable military works, "Modern AVarfare as influenced
by Modern Artillery," " The Theory of War," and " The Campaigns of Hannibal."
2^ Lt.General Macdonell served with the Rifle Brigade in the Kaffir war of 1846-47 (Medal). Also throughout
the Eastern campaign of 1854 as Aide de Camp to Sir George Brown, and jiresent at the affair of Bulganac, capture
of Balaklava.. and battles of Alma and Inkerman; commanded the 2nd Battalion from May 1855 to the fall ofSeljas-
topol, including the defence of the Quarries on 7th June, and assaults of the Redan on the i8th June and 8th Sept.
(Medal with three Clasps, Brevets of Major and Lt.Colonel, CB., Knight of the Legion of Honor, Sardinian ana
Turkish Medals, and 5th Class of the Medjidie). Commanded the 3rd Battalion during the Indian mutiny, includ¬
ing the skirmish at Secundra, siege and capture of Lucknow, and subsequent operations (Brevet of Colonel, Medal
with Clasp).
2' Lt.General Raines served throughout the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, including the battles of Alma
(where he carried the Queen's Color as a Captain), Inkerman, and Tchemaya, and repulse of the sortie of the 26th
October 1854; served as an Assistant Engineer throughout the siege and fall of Sebastopol (severely wounded in
the Trenches during the bombardment of the 17th Oct.), and present in the Trenches at the attack of the Redan on
the 18th June (Med.al with three Clasps, mentioned in despatches as " having served with zeal and distinction from
the opening of the campaign," Brevet of Major, Sardinian and Turki.sh Medals, and 5th Class of the Medjidie).
Served throughout the Indian mutiny campaign in 1857-59, commanded the Troops at the assault and capture of
Rowa on 6th January 1858 (received the high commendation of tlie Goveraor and ihe Conunander in Chief of
Bombay in Council for " gallantry displayed and ably conducting these operations "); commanded tlie Left Wing
95th Regiment at the siege and capture of Awah on 24t.h January; commanded the 95th at the siege and capture cf
Kotah, and commanded the 3rd assaulting Column on 30th March ; the capture of Chnndaree 26th May; com¬
manded the Infantry of Brigadier Smith's Column at the battle of Kota ke Serai (specially mentioned in despatches
by Sir Hugh Rose for "good service and assisting to take and hold the position of Kota-ka-Seria") before Gwalior
ou 17th June; and in the general action, storm and capture of the city and fortress of Gwalior on 19th Juno
(wounded by a musket-ball in the left arm, specially mentioned by Sir Hugh Hose for " gallantry and taking by
assault two i8-pounders" and for "good service in turning the guns captured on theenemj'"); present at the siege
and capture of Pouree on 24th August 1858 ; and the surprise and defeat of the rebels at Koondrye on the 19th
January 1859, (in addition to the above he has been four times mentioned in despatches, and marched 3,000
miles in command of the 95th Regiment in Central India, Medal with Clasp, Colonel, and CB. for distingu'shed
service in the field). As Brigadier General commanded the expedition from Aden into the interior of Arabia in
1865-66, when the troops captured and destroyed many towns and forts, includingUssala, theFudtheliscapitn], and
seven cannon (received the commendation of the Commander in Chief of Bombay for the efficient manner in
which those successful operations were effected).
'■"' Lt.General Street sei-ved in the 98th Regt. with the expedition to the north of China in 1842 (Medal) and was
present at the attack and capture of Chin Kiang Foo, and at the landing before Nankin. Embarked for the Crinier.
T8th Sept. 1854 as Brigade Major ist Brigade 4th Division : was present at the battles of Balaklava and Inkermnn,
siege and fall of Sebastopol, and expedition to Kinbourn (Medal with three Clasps, Brevet of Major, CB., Sardinian
and Turkish ?tedals, and 4th Class of the Modjidie).
^ Lt.General J. W. S. Smith commanded a Detachment of the 38th Regt. in co-operation with a Naval expedition
under Captain Loch in the ascent, in boats, of the river St. Juan de Nicaragua, Central America, in 1848, inchiding
the assault and capture of the port of Serapiqui, and surrender of the Forts of Castello Viejo and St. Carlos. He also
accompanied Captain Loch to the town of Grenada, and was present at the deliberations and conclusions of a treaty
with the Nicaraguan Commissioners. Served the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, including the battles of Alma and
Inkerman, siege of Sebastopol, capture and occupation of the Cemetery and suburbs on the 18th June, and was
senior Officer of the 38th at the close of the war (Medal with three Clasps, Knight of the Legion of Honor, 4th Class
of the Medjidie, Turkish Medal, and CB.). j
'^ Lt. General Claremont served as Assistant Commissioner at the Head Quarters of the French Army throughout j
the Eastern campaign of 1S54 a,nd up to the 6th August 1855, inclutling the battles of Alma. Balaklava, and Inkerman, 1
and siege of Sebastopol (Medal with four Clasps, Brevets of Major and Lt.Colonel, CB., OfHcer of the Legion ofl
Honor, and 4th Class of the Medjidie). Was also employed at the Head Quarters of the French Army during the f
Italian campaign in 1859 and was present at the battles of Magenta and Solferino (Medal). Promoted to Com-[
mander of the Legion of Honor in 1869. Was present in Paris, as Military Attach^, during the greater portion of the
period of its siege and bombardment by the German Army in 1870.
