Bengal Staff Cur^s.— War Services. 459
' Sir Arthur Becher served the campaign in Affghanistan in 1839 and was present at the storm and cap-
tare of Ghuznee (Medal). Throughout the Sutlej campaign of 1845-46, including the battles of Moodkee, Feroze-
shah, and Sobraon (Medal and two Clasps, and Brevet of Major). Also the Punjaub campaign of 1848-49, including
the siege and surrender of Mooltan and battle of Goojerat (Medal with two Clasps, Brevet of Lt.Colonel). Served
as Quarter Master General with Army Head Quarters throughout the siege of Delhi in 1857 (severely wounded,
CB., and Medal with Clasp).
* General A. Tucker served with the 9th Bengal Light Cavalry throughout the campaiga of 1843 in Sind, and
was severely wounded in five places at the battle of Meeanee (Medal, Cli., and Brevet of Major).
^ General E. Darvall served throughout the Burmese war of 1824-26, and was present at the attack and capture
of various stockades (Medal). Served also throughout the Indian Mutiny campaigns of 1857-59 (Medal).
' General H. Palmer served against tbe Bheel tribes in 1827-28. Campaigns during 1838-40 in Affghanistan
and Beloochistan, including the storm and capture 01 Ghuznee (Medal), and was severely wounded, matchlock-ball
through left thigh, in a skirmish at the entrance to the Bolan Pass on the 20th ilarch 1839. Sutlej campaign of
1845-46,commanded the 48th Bengal Native Infantry'in the battles of Moodkei> and Ferozesliah (horse shot), and was
a Brigade Major at the action of Alivval—wounded (Medal and two Clasps, and Brevet of Major). Served as Brigade
Major to Brigadier General Wheeler's Force at the sarreuder of Kote Kangra in 1846, and iiithe Punjaub campaign
of 1848-49, including the storming of the DuUah Heights and reduction of three small forts (Medal). Indian mutiny
campaign ia 1857-58, including the action of Chinhut in command of native details from mutinied regiments ; com¬
manded in the Muchee IShawu Fort from the flriui^ of the first rebjl shot against .t to the withdawal of its garrison,
and served in the defence of the Luuknow Residency to its relief; commanded a Detachment of all arms sent from
Cawnpore against rebels in 185b (Medal with Clasp, and a year s service).
' General D. Pott served with the 47th BengalXative Infantry against the insurgents near Cuttack in 1833. Served
throughout the Sutlej campaign of 1845-46 ; commanded the 47th Bengal Native Infantry at the battles of Moodkee
and Ferozeshah, and was also present at the affair of Buddiwal, action of Aliwal, and battle of Sobraon—horse shot
(Medal and three Clasps, and Brevet of Major). Commanded a force of 1,800 men against the insurgents in Pegu
in 1854 (received the thanks of the Government of India—Medal). Commanded 47th Bengal Native Infantry in the
Indian mutiny in 1857-58 against the rebels in the Mn'zapore district (Medal) ; embarked in its command in June
1858 on service to China, and served during the campaign of 1858-59 (received the thanks of the Government of
India—Medal).
' General W. E. Mulcaster served the campaign of 1842 in Affghanistan under General Pollock, and was
severely wounded at the forcing of the Khyber Pass (Medal). Served throughout the Sutlej campaign of 1845-46,
including the battles of Moodkee, Ferozeshah, and Sobraon (Medal and two Clasps). Punjaub campaign of 1848-49,
including the siege operations before Mooltan, and action of Soorjkhoond (Medal with Clasp).
' General O. Uaveuagh served with the 4th Bengal Irregular Cavalry the Gwalior campaign, including the
battle of Maharajpore—left leg can'ied away by a cannon-shot and charger killed (Bronze Star, and mentioned in
despatches). Served also in the Sutlej campaign in 1846, and was severely wounded in the left arm in the action of
Buddiwal (Medal, and Brevet of Major).
1° General J. S. Paton served the Gvvalior campaign, and was present at the battle of Maharajpore (Bronze
Star). Sutlej campaign of 1845-46, including the battles of Ferozeshah and Sobraon (Medal and one Clasp), and
capture of Kota Kangra. Punjaub campaign of 1848-49, including the affair of Ramuuggur, passage of the Chenab,
and battles of Sadoolapore and Chilliauwallah—severely wounded (Medal with Clasp, and Brevet of Major). Served
with the e.\peditiou under SirCharles Napier against the Atfreedies in 1850, including the forcing of the Kohat Pass
near Peshawur (Medal with Clasp). Also with the Force employed to suppress the Googaira insurrection in 1857,
and commanded the Field Detachment sent from Lahore, which was thrice engaged. Has been twenty-seven
times mentioned in despatches and orders.
'^ Sir CharlesReid served in Upper Sind under Sir Charles Napier in 1843; and with the Sirmoor Battalion (Goorkhas)
throughout the Sutlej campaign of 1845-46, including the action of Aliwal and battle of Sobraon—brought the
Battalion out of action (horse twice wounded, specially mentioned in Sir Walter Gilbert's despatch. Medal and
Clasp). Served in the Burmese war in 1852-53 (Medal with Clasp for Pegu). Commanded the Sirmoor Battalion
throughout the Indian mutiny in 1857; opened the communication between Meerut and Calcutta, for which he
received the thanks of Government; was present at the battle of Budlee-ke-Serai and throughout the siege of
Delhi, and commanded all the advanced posts on the right of the Delhi Ridge, including Hindoo Rao's house (the
key of the position) from the 8th June to the 14th September, during which period twenty-six separate attacks upon
those positions were repulsed. Commanded a Column on the 17th June for the attack on Kissengunge, commanded
the 4th Column of assault on Delhi on the 14th September—severely wounded (Brevet of Lt.Colonel, CB., and
Medal with Clasp). Served also in the Oude campaign in 1S58-59 (Aide de Camp to the Queen and Colonel,
thanked by Parliament, and on four separate occasions by the Government of India). Is in receipt of the Good
Service and the Wound pensions, and in 1871 was nominated a KCB. for his distinguished military services.
'* General G. P. Whish served the campaign of 1842 iu Atfghanistan under General Pollock (Medal). Also in
the Punjaub campaign of 1848-49 as an Assistant Adjutant General, and was present at the battle of Goojerat
(Medal with Clasp, and Brevet of Major).
'* General H. P. Dunsford served as a Brigade Major in the Sutlej campaign in 1846, and was present at the
battle of Sobraon (Medal, and Brevet of Major). Commanded the Troops of the Rajahs of Puttialla and Jheend dur¬
ing the siege of Delhi in 1857, ana was present at its storm and capture. Commanded the Bu.xar Column of the
Shahabad Field Force in Oct. and Nov. 1858; commanded at the attack of Burahporq on the 14th Oct. 1858, driving
the rebels in force out of a strongly entrenched position, and routing them with great slaughter; defeated an
attack of the rebels at Sikurreea on i6th October and in other skirmishes leading to the successful attack on the
town of Jugdespore on 19th October—severely wounded (Medal with Clasp, and CB.). Commanded the Jynteah
field force in Kxpeditions of 1862-63 against rebel Jyntealis in Assam, including the capture of the stockades of
Ralloang, Munsow, Oomkai, Rungbarai, and Surteung (thanked by the Commander in Chief, the Governor General,
and the Secretary of State for India). Commanded Columns of the Bhootan field force at the storm and capture
of the fort of Dalimkote and stockade of Ohannoorchie in Dec. 1864 (Medal with Clasp).
'^ Lieut.General G. T. Chamberlain served throughout the campaigns in AfTghanistan of 1839-42, including the
siege and capture of Ghuznee (Medal), and various actions near Candahar (Medal). Punjaub campaign of 1848-49,
including the battles of Chillianwallah and Goojerat, pursuit of the Sikh Army and its final surrender at Rawul
Pindee, and was wounded in a skirmish with Sikh Cavalry (mentioned in despatches. Medal with two Clasps, and
Brevet of Major). Served at Mooltan during the mutiny in 1857, disarmed the 62nd and 69th Bengal Native
Infantry, was engaged against the Googaira rebels, and was besieged in the Serai of Cheekawutne for four days
(Medal, Brevet of Lt.Colonel, and thanks of Government).
'^ Lieut. General R. G. Taylor served the Gwalior campaign and was present at the battle of Punniar on 29th Dec.
1843 (Bronze Star). Sutlej campaign of 1845-46 and severely wounded at the battle of Moodkee (Medal). Punjaub
campaign of 1848-49, and present throughout the siege operations before Mooltan, capture of the town, suiTender of
the citadel, and battle of Soroojkhoond (Medal with Clasp, and Brevet of Major),
1* Lieut.General A. Pytche commanded a Detachment of the Arracan Battalion employed against the Walleng
hill tribe on the Arracan frontier in 1841-42,—took the Walleng Hill stockade, and reduced the tribe to submission.
Served the Punjaub campaign of 1848-49, including the battles of Chillianwallah and Goojerat (severely wounded),
and subsequent pursuit of the Sikhs and Affghans (Medal with two Clasps). Raised and commanded an irregular
force with which, in conjunction with a party of seamen and marines under Commander Rennie, he defeated tho
Burmese Chiefs Nga-thein and Moung-tha-bon, on the 22nd and 23rd Jan., and the Burmese Governor of the pro¬
vince of Bassein on the 29th Jan. 1853, capturing nine guns and upwards of 3,000 stand of armo (thanked by the
Governor General of India in Comicil). Co-operated with the force under Sir John Cheape during March 1853
against the force under Myat-Toon in the vicinity of Donabew—wounded (mentioned in despatches, thanked by the
Government of India, Brevet of Major, Medal with Clasp for Pegu). Quelled a rebellion of the Burmese in tho Bas¬
sein district in Feb. 1854, with a small force of regular troops and a levy of Burmese, and after three engagements
completely routed the insurgents and captured their leaders (thanked by the Government of India). Quelled a
rebellion of the Karen tribes in the Bassein district with the Bassein Police Corps, which ho commanded during
Jan. and Feb. 1857, routing a large body of insurgents under Meng-loung, a pseudo prince of that tribe, and taking
him prisoner (thanked by the Governor General of India in Council).
