Medical Department.—War Services. 3^^
^ Surgeon T. Wright served with the 20th Regiment the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, including the battles of
Alma and Inkermau, and siege of Sebastopol (Medal with three Clasps, and Turkish Medal). Served with the 38th
Regiment in the Indian campaign from Nov. 1857, including the captui-e of Meangunge, siege and capture of
Lucknow (Medal with Clasp).
"' Doctor F. S. B. F. de Chaumont served with the Rifle Brigade in the Crimea from 2i8t May 1855, and was pre¬
sent at the siege and fall of Sebastopol (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal).
"" Doctor A. Guthrie sei-ved with the Rifle Brigade in the Indian campaign of 1857-59, including the action of
Cawnpore, siege and capture of Luckuow, Trans-Gogra campaign, and afterwards with Ross' Camel Corps in Central
India in 1858-60 (Medal with Clasp).
*i Surgeon E. Y. Kellett served in the Crimea from the ist October 1854 to the 20th May 1856, including the
siege and fall of Sebastopol, and in medical charge of detachments from Balaklava that took part in the battle on
the 25th October 1854. Was in medical charge of Russian wounded prisoners after Inkerman, and of the General
Field and Cholera Hospitals of the 3rd Division (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal). Served in the New
Zealand war in 1863-65, and was in medical charge of the 14th Regiment at the battle of Rangiriri (mentioned in
despatches. Medal).
*^ Surgeon R. A. Chappie served the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, and was present with the Soots Greys at the
afi^xir of M'Kenzie's Farm, cajJture and battle of Balaklava (horse wounded), and with the Royal Artillery at tho
battle of Inkerman; served with the right siege train for more than ten months and performed constant trench
duty, and was in tho Trenches during the bombardments of April and 6th and 17th June and final assault (Medal
with three Clasps, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
'"' Surgeon L. G. Hooper ser\-ed in the Crimea from 22nd Sept. to Nov. 1854, when he was sent to Scutari in charge
of wounded, but returned to the Crimea the following spring, and was present at the siege and fall of Sebastopol
(Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal).
"* Surgeon A. G. Young served with the 2nd Battalion Rifle Brigade in tho Crimea, and was present throughout
the siege of Sebastopol (Modal with Cla,sp, and Turkish Medal). Served in medical charge of the 2nd Battalion 60th
Rifles throughout the campaign of i860 in China (Medal with two Clasps).
"' Surgeon C. C. Dempster served with the 46tli Regiment in the Crimea from 8th Nov. 1854 to 20th May 1856,
including the siege and fall of Sebastupol, and attack of the 18th ,Tune (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal).
Accompanied the expedition into the Hazara district under Sir Sydney Cotton in Octolier and Nov. 1857 (Medal
with Clasp). Was in medical charge of the Movalile Column from Ferozepore after Tantia To])ee iu Feb. and
March 1859. Served in the New Zealand war of 1863-65, and was with the 50th Regiment at the storm and capture
of Rangiawhia on 21st Feb. 1864—mentioned in despatches (Medal).
*^ Doctor S. M. Webb served at the siege of Sebastopol during the winter of 1854-55 (Medal with Clasp, and
Turkish Medal).
*8 Doctor R. W. Meadows served with the gth Regiment in the Crimea from Oct. 1854, including the siege and
fall of Sebastopol, and assault of the batteries on the iSth June (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal).
*' Surgeon A. Reid served with the Royals at the siege and fall of Sebastopol from 15th July 1855 (Medal with
Clasp, and Turkish Medal).
3" Surgeon R. Hungerford served in the Crimea from nth March 1855 (Medal with Clasps for Sebastopol, and
Turkish Medal). Served with the 53rd Regiment during the Indian campaign of 1857-58, including the action of
Khodagunge and entry into i'uttehgunge, storm and caiiture of Meangunge, siege and capture of Lucknow, and
affair of Koorsie, and some minor affairs (Medal with Clasp).
'' Surgeon W. G. N. Manley sei-ved with the Royal Artillery in the Crimea from the nth June 1855, including the
siege and fall of Sel)astopol (Medal with Clasp, and Turkisli Medal). Also served with tho Royal Artillery in the
New Zealand war of 1864-66, volunteered and accompanied the storming party at the assault of the (rate Pah near
Tauranga (Victoria Cross, and mentioned in despatches). Served with the field force under General Chute in tho
expedition from Wanganui to Taranaki, including the march through the bush at the rear (jf Mount Kgmont, and
was present at the assault and capture of the following Pahs, viz.: Okotoukou, Putahi, Otapawa, and Waikokou
(thanked in general orders, and promoted Staff'Surgeon for " distiiiguisheil and meritorious services rendered to
the sick and wounded during the operations iu New Zealand," Medal). Has received the Bronze Medal of the Royal
Humane Society for swimming to the assistance and rescuing from drovvuiug a gunner of the Royal Artillery who
had fallen overboard while disembarking from a steamer in the Waitotara river. New Zealand. Proceeded with
the British Ambulance to the Franco-German war of 1870-71. Was in charge of "B" Division of the Ambu¬
lance and attached to the 22nd Division of the Prussian Army, accompanying it during the operations consequent
on the advance on Orleans. Marched with it between 200 and 300 miles during the severe winter weather in Novem¬
ber and December, and was present at several engagements. For his services was thanked by General Von Wittich
commanding the Division, and received the Steel War Medal; also, at the recjuest of the Crown Prince, was granted
by the Emperor of Germany the 2nd Class of the Iron Cross '* on account of his devoted and excellent conduct in
seeking out and caring for the wounded of the 22nd Prussian Division in the actions of Chateauneuf and Breton-
celles on the i8th and 21st November, and the battles of Orleans and Cravant on the 2nd to the loth December
1870." Has also received the Bavarian Order of Merit for 1870-71. Was present also at the siege of Paris, and
on the declaration of the Armistice jiroceeded into the city with supplies for the hospitals.
"2 Surgeon A. R. Hudson served with the 6th Regiment in the Indian mutiny campaign in 1858, Including the
operations in the Jugdespore Jungle (Medal). Served also throughout the operations against the hill tribes in
Sikkim in 1861.
'^ Surgeon W. M. Calder served in the Crimea with the 49th Regiment from 27th July 1855. including the siege
and fall of Sebastopol, and assault of the Redan on the 8th September (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal).
'■* Surgeon B. Burland was promoted Staff Surgeon " iu consideration of his highly meritorious services rendered
during the epidemic of yellow fever in Bermuda."
'5 Surgeon W. J. Rendell served with the 41st and 55th Regiments in the Crimea from loth March 1855, including
the siege and fall of Sebastopol (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal). Served in India during the mutiny
of 1857-59 ; present in mediciil charge of two Batteries of Ro.yal Artillery at the action of Secundra (Medal).
Served with the 55th Regiment on the Bhootan expedition in 1865 (Medal with Clasp).
'« Surgeon L. Kidd was in medical charge of the Troops on Vjoaril the C/iarlotte and Eastern Monarch, and was
honourably mentioned for his conduct on the occasion of the loss of each of these ships.
^' Surgeon L. O. Patterson served in medical charge of a field force against the rebel Kareens in Burmah, and
was present in six engagements. Served in India during the mutiny in 1858-59; was in medical charge of the
Arrah Field Force from June to Oct. 1858, and present in action at Sirthooa (wounded), Julpoora, Brahrainagunge,
Rampore, Perowra, Jumaon, Karrisath, and Jugdespore ; volunteered to overtake Lt.CJolonel Sir H. Havelock and
take medical charge Of his Cavalry; present with them at the charge and action at Neenadee, present again with
tho field force in the last action at Mahoolan, and in several other minor skirmishes (three times mentioned in
despatches. Medal).
^ Doctor John TuUoch served with tho loth Regiment in the Indian campaign of 1857-58, including tho sup¬
pression of the mutiny at Benares, capture of Atrowleea, advance to Lucknow and actions at Chandij, Umeerpore,
Sultanpore, and Douraha, siege and capture of Lucknow, relief of Azimghur, and operations near Jugdesporo
(Medal with Clasp).
™ Surgeon W. Haward served with the 34th Regiment in the Crimea from Dec. 1854, including the siege and fall
of SeVjastopol (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal). Served also in the Indian campaign iu 1857-58, including
the actions at Cawnpore on 26th, 27th, and 28th Nov. 1857, siege and capture of Lucknow and relief of Azimghur
(Medal with Clasp).
'"0 Surgeon G. B. F. Arden served with the 12th Regiment in the New Zealand war from July 1863 to June 1866
(Medal).
'"' Surgeon G. B. Poppelwell served on the Staff in the Crimean campaign of 1854-55, and was present with tho
j 31st Regiment at the siege of Sebastopol, and attack of the Redan on the 18th June (Medal wtth Clasp, and Turkish
1 Medal). Served with the 84th Regiment from the commencement of the Indian mutiny, and was present with
I General Havelock's Force in the actions of 21st and 23rd Sept. 1857, relief of Lucknow and its subsequent defence ;
t with Outram's Force at the Alumbagh, at the siege and capture of Lucknow; and with the qoth Light Infantry
