manded the advance guard (Medal and Clasp). In 1848 when stationed at tlie Mauritius he
was upset in a boat off Mahebourg together with five others whose lives were saved by his skill
and corn-age in swimming, for which the Royal Humane Society conferred on him its Gold Medal
211 Colonel Baynes served in the Crimea from Nov. 1^*54 as Captain in the Mounted
Staff Corps, and afterwards as Military Magistrate of the Army (Medal and Clasp, 5th Class of
the Medjidie, Turkish Medal, and Brevet of Major). Served in India during the Mutiny, and com¬
manded the force consisting of 2 guns Ilorse Artillery, loOmenof 8tU Regt., and a detachment of
Punjaub Cavalry, which surprised the garrison and secured the fort and magazine of Phillour,
on the Siitlej, 12th and 13th May 1857. Served with the 8th Regt. at tlio siege of Delhi, and
was dangerously wounded at the assault of the city, leg amputated (Brevet of Lieut.Colonel,
Medal and Clasp).
212 Colonel Stapylton served in the 13th Light Infantry the campaigns of 1840 and 1842 in
Affghanistan, and was present at the storming of the Khoord Cabool Pass, affair of Tezeen,
forcing the Jugdulluck Pass, reduction of the fort of Mamoo Khail, heroic defence of Jellala-
bad, and sorties on the 14th Nov. and 1st Dee. 184!, 11th March, 24th March, and 1st April
1842; the general action, with defeat of the besieging force under Akbar Klian before Jella-
labad on the 7th April, the storming of the Jugdulluck heights, general action at Tezeen, and
recapture of Cabul, for which he has a Medal, as also for Jellalabad.
213 Colonel Lamb served witli the 10th Regt. during the Indian campaign of 1857-58, and was
present at the action of Shahgunge oth July and battle of Agra on lOtli Oct. 1857; was Assis¬
tant Field Engineer in the fort at Agra in 1857 (Medal).
214 Colonel Gordon served in tlie campaigns against the Kaffir tribes of South Africa in
1834-35 (Medal). Also as Assistant Engineer during 1837 and 1838, on the eastern frontier of
the Cape Colony; and employed imder Colonel Lewis, commanding Royal Engineers, to
execute a confidential survey (trigonometrical and statistical) on that frontier. Served in the
Indian campaign of 1857-58, commanding the 75th Regt. during the capture of Delhi from
the 15th Sept. and was wounded on the 18ih leading the assault on the Hubshec-ka-
Phateek; planned and carried out the forward movement of the right attack within the city,
surprising and capturing the Burra Bastion at its gorge on the evening of the 19th, retaining it
under a constant fire until the next morning when the enemy evacuated Delhi. Proceeded
with Greathed's Column and commanded the Regt. in the actions of Bolundshuhur, Allyghur,
Akrabad, Agra, and Kanoj, advance into Oude and minor affairs ending in the relief of Luck-
now; subsequently with the Oude field force in front of the city until 14th Feb.—specially
mentioned in Outram's despatch for "judgment and coolness" in defending the left advanced
outpost of the Camp during a night attack made by a very large force of the enemy on the
16th Jan., which he repulsed with severe loss (Medal and Clasps, and Brevet Lt.Colonel).
215 Colonel J. A. Stewart served throughout the campaign in Svria in 1840,—at the camp at
D'Jouni as Acting Engineer, the storm and capture of Sydon, surrender of Beyrout, bombard¬
ment and capture of St. Jean d'Acre (War Medal and Clasp, and Turkish Medal). Served also
on the coast of Africa for two years, commanded a detachment of Marines at the destruction of
several Barracoons, and liberated 1,200 slaves in 1842 ; was attacked by large numbers of
Africans at Kabenda, three miles inland,and effected a safe retreat to the breach with three men
mortally wounded. Was present at the bombardment of the batteries at the Straits of Simono-
saki, the entrance of the inland sea of Japan, on the 5th and 6th September 1804.
216 Colonel Bulwer served the Eastern campaign of 1854 with the 23rd Fusiliers, including
the battle of Alma and siege of Sebastopol (Medal with two Clasps, and Turkish Medal). Served
in the Indian mutiny of 1857-59, including the siege and capture of Lucknow, and operations
across the Goomtee under Outram. Commanded a column of troops with the left wing of the
23rd Fusiliers in the Bueswarra district of Oude, including the capture of the Fort of Selimpore,
and two other successful engagements at Julrowlee and Poorwah, commanded left wing of the
23rd at the defeat of Benee Madho by Lord Clyde at Buxarghat (Brevet of Lt.Colonel, CB.,
Medal with Clasp, and mentioned in dispatches).
217 Colonel F. C. Maude commanded the Roval Artillery throughout the operations with
General Havelock's Column in 1857, including the defeat of the Rebels at Futtehpore, actions of
Aoung, Pandoo Nuddee, Cawnpore, Oonao, Bnseerut Gunge, Mungarwar, relief and defence of
the Residency of Lucknow ; with Outram's force at the Alumbagh from Jan. to March 1858;
also at the siege and capture of Lucknow (repeatedly mentioned in dispatches, Brevets of Major
and Lt.Colonel, CB., Victoria Cross, Medal with Clasps and a year's service).
218 Colonel Strong served with the Coldstream Guards the Eastern Campaign of 1854 and up
to 5th May 1855, including the battles of Alma, Balaklava, and Inkerman, and siege of
Sebastopol; commanded the 1st Battalion the greater part of the day at Inkerman and brought
it out of action (Medal and Clasps, Knight of the Legion of Honor, Sardinian and Turkish
Medals, and 5th Class of the Medjidie).
219 Colonel Mulock commanded the 70th Regt. during the New Zealand war of 1863-65
(mentioned in dispatches, CB.).
220 Colonel Fellowes served the Eastern campaign of 1854-55 as D.A.Q.M.G., Cavalry
Division, including the affairs of Bulganak and Mackenzie's Farm, battles of Alma, Balaklava,
Inkerman, and Tcliernaya, and siege of Sebastopol (Medal and Clasps, Brevet Major, Sardinian
Medal, and 5th Class of the Medjidie).
222 Colonel Prior served witli the 12th Lancers throughout the Kaffir war of 1851-53
CMedal), including the passage cf, and operations across the Kei. The Eastern campaign from
i7lh May 1855, including ths battle of Tchernaya, sie^s and fall of Sebastopol, and operations
nearEupatoria under General D'AUonville (Medal and Clasp, and Turkish Medal). The Indian
campaign of 1858-59 with the Saugor and Nerbudda field force, Including the action of Banda
where he commanded the left wing of the 12th Lancers, action of Jegunge and Kobrai, relief of
Kirwce, and action at the storming of the heights of Puawarrie (mentioned in despatches,
Brevets of Major and Lt.Colonel, Medal and Clasp).
