59 War Services of the Colonels.
the Crimea, and was present at the battles of Balaklava and Inkerman. Has received a Gold
Medal from the Sultan for his services on the Danube; the Crimean Medal with three Clasps,
and the Turkish Medal.
90 Sir William West Turner served with the 26tli Cameronians in China, and was present at
the defence of Ningpo, action of Tscke, storm and capture of Chapoo, Woosung, Shanghai,
and Chinkiangfoo, and demonstration before Nankin (Medal). Served with the 16th Regt. in
Ceylon, and during the Kandian rebellion of 1848. Served with the 7th Fusiliers in the Eastern
campaign during the siege of Sebastopol in 1855, including the sorties of 5th April and 9th
May, assault and capture of the Quarries on 7th June (in command of the storming party of his
Regt. and slightly wounded), assault of the Redan on 18th June (brought the Regt. out of
action), assault of the Redan on 8th Sept. (in command of the Regt. and wounded), and was
commandant of the Karabclnaia at Sebastopol from 3rd Dec. 1855 to the end of June 1856
(Medal and Clasp, Brevets of Major and Lt.Colonel, CB., Knight of the Legion of Honor,
Turkish Medal and 5th Class of the Medjidie). Served in Bengal in suppressing the Mutiny
in 1857-58, with the Jounpore field force in the actions of Chanda, Ummeerpore, and Sultan-
pore, afterwards at the siege and capture of Lucknow. Employed on special duty in command
of tlie troops on the Grand Trunk Road near Sasseram from 2:3rd July 1858 to 10th July J859,
carrying on operations against the Shahabah, Beliar, and Palamow rebels, including the actions
of Suhejnce, Nonadee, and thirteen minor affairs (most honourably mentioned by the Com¬
mander in Chief of India and the Governor General of India in Council, and promoted to
Colonel). Again employed on special service in command of No. 2 Column of Bundlecund
field force from 14th Oct. to 7th Dec. 1859, including the night surprise of the enemy near
Bomorie on the Kalla Nuddee on 5th Nov. 1859 (Medal and Clasp). Appointed to the
command of the 1st Brigade Eusofzye field force and commanded it on the 15tli and ICth
Dec. 1863 at the assault and taking of the Conical Hill and Lalloo, the descent into theChumla.
Valley and attack on tlie enemy's rear at the entrance to the Bonair Pass.
97 Colonel Lockliart commanded a field force in Central India from 2nd Aug. to 17th Sept.
1858, including the action near Rajhghar. Commanded a Brigade in the Central India field
force from 18th Sept. to 6th Dec. 1858, including the actions at Mongrowlie, Sindwaho, and
Korai (three times mentioned in despatches, Medal, Brevet of Colonel, and CB.)
98 CJolonel Faunce commanded the Light Company of the 4th Regt. at the^ recapture of tho
Fort of Nepaunee on the 21st Feb. 1841.
99 Colonel Mayow served throughout the Eastern Campaign of 1854-55, first as a Brigade
Major of the Light Cavalry Brigade to the 19th Dec. 1854, including the affairs of Bulganac
and McKenzie's Farm, and battles of Alma, Balaklava, and Inkerman, and afterwards from the
20th Dec. to the end of the War as Assist. Qr. Master General of tho Cavalry Division,
including tlie night attack on the Russian outposts on 19th Feb. 1855, battle of the Tchernaya,
and tlie siege and fall of Sebastopol (Medal and Clasps, Knight of the Legion of Honor, Sar¬
dinian and Turkish Medals, and 4th Class of the Medjidie).
100 Colonel Hale served in the N. W. Provinces and Oude in suppressing the mutiny in
1857-59; commanded three companies of the 82d Kegt. at the relief of Lucknow by Lord
Clyde, and succeeded to the command of the 5th Brigade on Brigadier Russell being severely
wounded and Colonel Biddulph killed (wounded and horse killed by a round shot); com¬
manded the 82nd during the latter part of the defence and at the battle of Cawnpore, and the
6th Brigade at the action of Khodagunge, subsequent occupation of Futtehghur; served
throughout the Rohilcund campaign and was left in command of the post of Shahjehanpore on
the advance of the army under Lord Clyde to Bareilly (wounded); commanded the Regiment
at the actions of Kankur and Bunkagaon; was appointed to the command of a Brigade for
field service in Oude in Oct. 1858, and held it to the end of the campaign (frequently men¬
tioned in despatches, CB., Colonel, Medal and Clasp).
101 Colonel Ewart served throughout the Eastern campaign from the first landing at
Gallipoli in April 1854 until the final evacuation of the Crimea in June 1856; present with the
93rd at the battle of Alma, and until after the occupation of Balaklava ; appointed a D.A.Q.M.G.,
26th Sept. 1854, and as such was present at the battles of Balaklava and Inkerman, and
throughout the siege operations before Sebastopol up to 13th Feb. 1855, when he rejoined the
93rd on promotion; accompanied the expedition to the Sea of AzoiF, and w.ns at the
capture of Kertch and Yenikali; afterwards present at the siege and fall of Sebastopol, and
assaults on the 18th June and 8th Sept. (Medal and four Clasps, Brevet of Major and Lt.Col.,
Knight of the Legion of Honor, Sardinian and Turkish Medals, and 5th Class of the Jledjidie).
Served in Bengal during the Indian Mutiny ; was at an engagement near Bunnee, and after¬
wards at the final relief of Lucknow; held for a short time a command consisting of three
squadrons of Cavalry, 5 guns, and 500 Infantry (specially named in dispatches, and appointed
a CB.); and on the 16th Nov. commanded the leading party of stormers at the assault of the
Secunderbagh, on which occasion he personally captured a colour, receiving two sabre wounds in
an encounter with tlic two Native Officers who were defending it; was again (very severely)
wounded by a cannon shot (left arm carried away) when in action with the Gwalior rebels at
Cawnpore on the 1st Dec. 1857 (Medal and Clasp, Aide de Camp to the Queen and Colonel).
Commanded the 93rd Highlanders for a short period during the siege of Sebastopol, and was
Lieut.Colonel of the 78th Highlanders for upwards of five years.
102 Colonel Parke served in the Crimean campaign from 13th June 1855, in command of the
72nd Highlanders from July, including the expedition to Kertch, siege and fall of Sebastopol,
and assaults of 18th June and 8th Sept. (Medal and Clasp), Knight of the Legion of Honor,
Turkish Medal, and 5th Class of tho Medjidie). Served in India in 1857-59, was appointed 1st
Class Brigadier, and commanded 2nd Brigade of the Rajpootana field force from March 1858 to
July 1859, including the siege and fall of Kotah, on which occasion he commanded the leading
column of assault; subsequently throughout the operations in Central India in 1858-59, and
