Fusiliers in Oufram's foKO at the Alum Bagh in all the operations of the succeeding months,
including the capture of Lucknow ; also in the Oude campaign of 1858-50, including the capture
of the I'orts of SliunUcrpore. Amatee, and Oomrea, and action of Dounderkeira, where he com¬
manded the advanced suaid (Medal and Clasp). In 1848 when stationed at the Mauritius he
was iipsct in a Vjoat off Jlahebourg together with five others whose lives were saved by his skill
and courage in swimming, for which the Royal Humane Society conferred on him its Gold Medal.
211 Colonel Baynes served in the Crimea from Nov. 1854 as Captain in the Mounted
Staff Corps, ai:d alterwards as Military Magistrate of the Army (Medal and Clasp, 5th Class of
the Medjidie, Turkish Medal, and Brevet of Major). Served in India during the Mutiny, and com¬
manded the force consisting of H guns Horse Artillery, 150 men of 8th Regt., and a detachment of
Punjaub Cavalry, which surprised the garrison and secured the fort and magazine of Phillour,
on the Sutlej, 12tli and 13th May 1857. Served with the Bth Regt. at the siege of Delhi, and
was dangerously wounded at the assault of the city, leg amputated (Brevet of Lieut.Coloncl,
Medal and Clasp).
•212 Colonel Stapylton served in the 13th Light Infantry the campaigns of 1840 and 1842 in
AfTghanistan, and was present at the storming of the Khoord Cabool Pass, affair of Tezeen,
forcing the Jugdulhick Pass, reduction of the fort of Mamoo Khail, heroic defence of Jellala-
bad, and sorties on the 14th Nov. and 1st Dec. 1841, 11th March, 24th March, and 1st April
1842; the general action, with defeat of the besieging force under Akbar Khan before Jella-
labad en the 7th April, the storming of the Jugdulluck heights, general action at Tezeen, and
recapture of Cabul, for which he has a Medal, as also for Jellalabad.
213 Colonel Lamb served with the 10th Regt. during the Indian campaign of 1857-58, and was
present at the action of Shaligunge 5th July and battle of Agra on 10th Oct. 1857; was Assis¬
tant rield Engineer iu the fort at Agra in 1857 (Medal).
214 Colonel Cruice served with the Gth Regt. in the Kaffir war in 1851 (Medal).
215 Colonel J. A. Stewart served throughout the campaign in Syria in 1840,—at the camp at
D'Jouni as Acting Engineer, the storm and capture of Sydon, surrender of Beyrout, bombard¬
ment and capture of St. Jean d'Acre (War Medal and Clasp, and Turkish Medal). Served also
on the const of Africa for two years, commanded a detachment of Marines at the destruction of
several Bariacoons, and liberated 1,200 slaves in 1842; was attacked by large numbers of
Africans at Kabenda, three miles inland, and effected a safe retreat to the breach with three men
mortally wounded. Was present at the bombardment of the batteries at the Straits of Simono-
saki, the entrance of the inland sea of Japan, on the 5lh and 6th September 1864.
216 Colonel Bulwer served the Eastern campaign of 1854 with the 23rd Fusiliers, including
the battle of Alma and siege of Sebastopol (Medal with two Clasps, and Turkish Medal). Served
in the Indian mutiny of 1857-53, including the siege and capture of Lucknow, and operations
across the Goomtee under Outram. Commanded a column of troops with the left wing of the
23rd Fusiliers iu the Bueswarra district of Oude, Including the capture of the Fort of Selimpore,
and two other successful engagements at Julrowlee and Poorwah, commanded left wing of the
23rd at the defeat of Benee Madho by Lord Clyde at Buxarghat (Brevet of Lt.Colonel, CS.,
Medal with Clasp, and mentioned in dispatches).
217 Colonel F. C. Maude commanded the Royal Artillery throughout the operations with
General Havelock's Column in 1857, including the defeat of the Rebels at Futtehpore, actions of
Aoung, Pandoo Nuddee, Cawnpore, Oonao, Buseerut Gunge, Mungarwar, relief and defence of
the Residency of Lucknow ; with Outram's force at the Alumbagh from Jan. to March 1858;
also at the siege and capture of Lucknow (repeatedly mentioned in dispatches, Brevets of Major
and Lt.Colonel, CB., Victoria Cross, Medal with Clasps and a year's service).
218 Colonel Strong served with the Coldslream Guards the Eastern Campaign of 1854 and up
to 5th May lij55, including the battles of Alma, Balaklava, and Inkerman, and siege of
Sebastopol; commanded the 1st Battalion the greater part of the day at Inkerman and brought
it out of action (Medal and Clasps, Knight of the Legion of Honor, Sardinian and Turkish
Medals, and 5lh Class of the Medjidie).
219 Colonel Muloek commanded the 70th Regt. during the New Zealand war of 1863-60
(mentioned in dispatches, CB.).
220 Colonel Fellowes served the Eastern campaign of 1854-55 aa D.A.Q.M.G., Cavalry
Division, including the affairs of Bulganak and Mackenzie's Farm, battles of Alma, Balaklava,
Inkerman, and Tcliernaya, and siege of Sebastopol (Medal and Clasps, Brevet Major, Sardinian
Medal, and 6th Class of the Medjidie).
221 Colonel North was on service with the Gth Regt. at the defence of Aden against the
Arabs in 1840-41. Served in the Punjaub campaign of 1848-49, including the second siege
operations aud capture of Mooltan, battle of Goojerat, pursuit of the Sikh army until its final
surrender at Rawul Pindee, occupation of Attock and Peshawur, and expulsion of the Affghan
force beyond the Khyber Pass (Medal and two Clasps). Served during the Indian Mutiny in
1857 with Havelotk's Column from its formation, attached to 78th Highlanders in the actions
of Futiehpore, Aoung, Pandoo Nuddee, and Cawnpore, as Deputy Judge Advocate General'
from 21st July in the actions of Oonao, Buseerutgunge (1st), Mungarwar, and Alum Bagh, and
Relief of Lucknov.-, defence of the Residency until relieved by Lord Clyde. Thanked by
Governor General in Council and in Gen. Outram's despatch " for tlie readiness and success
â– with wiiich he established and superintended the manufacture of Enfield rifle cartridges. This
•valuable service was rendered without any relaxation of his other duties, in the prosecution of
which he met with a wound" (Medal and Clasps, Brevet of Lt.Colonel, and a year's service for
Lucknow).
222 Colonel Prior served with the 12th Lancers throughout the Kaffir war of 1851-53
CMedal), including the jiassage of, and operations across the Kei. The Eastern campaign from
17lh May 1855, iuoluding the battle of Tchcrnaya, siege and fall of Sebastopol, and operations
near Eupatoria under General D'AUonville (Medaland Clasp, and Turkish Medal). The Indian
campaign of 1858-59 with the Saugor and Nerbudda field force, including the action of Banda
where ho commanded the lefc wing of the 12th Lancers, actioa of Jegunge and Kobrai, relief of
