While serving in H. M. S. North Star, from Sept. 1841 to Sept. 1846, he participated in the
operations of the Expeditionary Force in China, including the blockade of the Wcosunp: River
(Medal). On the termination of hostilities with China he proceeded in tlie Noitk Star to
New Zealand ; and was landed with all the detachments of Royal Marines from H.M. ships
present, and appointed to command that force, together with a detachment of the 9Glh Regt.,
with which he was actively employed in the field against the insurgent chiefs, whoso strongly--
stockaded Pahs, or Villages, were successfully attacked and destroyed: for these services he
obtained the Brevet rank of Major. Accompanied the expedition to the Baltic in 1834 (Medal).
b-i Major General L'Estrange served the campaign of 1808-9 in Spain with the 14th, and
was present at the battle of Corunna. Capture of the Isle of France in 1810. Capture of
Java in ISll, and engaged with a Dutch brigade at St. Nicholas. At the storming of a strong
Dutch Fort on the coast of Bantam. On board H.M.S. Roscins at the boarding and capture
of eleven French gun-boats. Present at the siege and storm of Cornelis, and storm and
capture of the heights of Serandole. At the capture of the town and fortress of Sambas, Isle
o{ Borneo, in March 1813. Nepaul war in 1815 ; siege and capture of Hattras in March 1817 ;
Mahratta campaign in 1817 and 18 : siege and storm of Bhurtpore under Lord Combermere.
He has received the War Medal and two Clasps for Corunna and Java.
53 Major General Williamson served with the 27th Regt. in the Kaffir war of 1834-35( Medal).
54 Major General Parke served in co-operation with the Spanish forces and Legion near
San Sebastian, and under Espartero in raising the siege of Bilboa—Medal (Knight 1st Class St.
Fernando and Knight of Isabella the Catholic).
55 Major General Jardine served during the Indian campaign of 1858, including the occu¬
pation, after the relief of Lucknow, of the fortified outposts and camp with Outram's force and
repulse of the enemy's attacks (Medal).
56 Major General Hurdle was at the attack on the forts and harbour of Courageaux in
1815 ; and battle of Navarino in 1827 (War Medal with one Clasp). He served during the re¬
volutionary war in Greece in 1828, and received the Cross of the Redeemer of Greece. Was
present in the engagement at Punta Obligada in the river Parana on the 20th Nov. 1845, for
which he received the Brevet rank of Major. Commanded the Brigade of Royal Marines
serving with the army in the Crimea, including the battle of Balaklava, siege and fall of Se-
bastopol in 1854-55 ; commanded the 2nd Brigade of the Army at the surrender of Kinbourn
(Medal and Clasps, CB., Aide-deCamp to the Queen, Officer of the Legion of Honor, Sar¬
dinian and Turkish Medals, and 3rd Class of the Medjidie).
57 Major General Lowth when Brigadier commanding at Kurrachee disarmed the 21st
Rogt. Bombay N.I. on the night of the 13th Sept. 1857. Served with the Central India field
force in 1858 in command of the 86th Regt. and was present at the siege storm and capture of
the strong hill fort of Chundairee, battle of the Betwa, siege storm and capture of the town
and fortress of Jhansi, action of Koonch, operations before Calpee from 16th to 21st May,
battle of Gowlowlie, capture of the town and fort of Calpee, battle of Morar, battle of and
capture of the town and fortress of Gwalior (several times mentioned in despatches. Brevet of
Colonel, distinguished service pension, CB., Medal and Clasp).
58 Major General Blachford served with the 24th in the Punjanb campaif.^n of 1848-9
(Medal), including the passage of the Chenab and battles of Sadoolapore, Chilli an wallah (suc¬
ceeded to the command of the Regt.), and Goojerat (Medal and Clasps).
59 Major General Hodgson served with the 45th in the Burmese war (Medal).
60 Major General M'Cleverty served the campaign against the Rajah of Coorg, in April
1834, with the 48th Regiment. Commanded the troops in New Zealand during the Native
disturbances in 1847, and repulsed 400 Natives in their attack at Wanganui on the 19th
July, which resulted in a peace undisturbed till 1860.
61 Major General Robert B. Wood served as Aide de Camp and Military Secretary to
Lord Hardinge throughout the campaign on the Sutlej (Medal), including the battles of Mood-
kee, Ferozeshah (severely wounded), and Sobraon (Medal and two Clasps, and CB.).
62 Major General Lewis served with the Grenadier Guards at the siege and fall of Sebasto-
pol from 13th Aug. 1855 (Medal and Clasp, Turkish Medal, and 5th Class of the Medjidie).
63 Major General Bedford served with the 60th Rifles in the Kaffir war of 1851-53 (Medal
and Brevetof Lt.Colonel).
64 Major General Longfield commanded the 2nd Brigade at the siege of Delhi in 1857,
the Reserve during the assault, and served in the City during the six days' fighting that en¬
sued {CB., Medal and Clasp).
65 Major General F. W. Hamilton served with the Grenadier Guards throughout the
Eastern campaign of 1854-5, including the battles of Alma, Balaklava, and Inkerman
(slightly wounded and horse shot), sortie of 26th October, and siege of Sebastopol, during the
latter period of which he commanded Divisions of the Army in the Trenches, and was in
temporary command of the Grenadier Guards after Inkerman {CB., Medal with four
Clasps, Officer of the Legion of Honor, 3rd Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
66 Major General Horn served the Eastern campaign of 1854-55; commanded the Right
Brigade 4th Division at the battle of Alma; and the 20th Regt. at the battles of Balaklava
(and recapture of the redoubts and guns from the Russians, who had driven the Tnrkish force
therefrom the same morning) and lukerman (twice wounded and horse shot under him): pre¬
sent throughout the siege operations against Sebastopol,and in the trenches at the two assaults
and fall of the town (Medal and Clasps): at Inkerman he succeeded to the command of the
4lh Division (Medal and Clasps, CB., Officer of the Legion of Honor, Sardinian and Turkish
Medals, and 3rd Class of the Medjidie).
67 Major General J. F. G. Campbell commanded the infantry force which foimed part o
the expedition against the Insurgent Boers, beyond the Orange River, South Africa, in Apri
