' SirEichiird Dacres served in the Eastern campaiga of 1834-55, incUuliug the affairs of Bulganac and il'Jvenzie'a
Farm, and battles of Alma, Balaklava, and Inkerman (horse kuled); commanded the Royal Artillery at the repulse
of the Hussiansinthe sortie from Seijastopol on the 26th October; succeeded to the command of the Royal Artillery
at the siege of Sebastopol, after B rigadier General Strangways was killed at Inkerman on the 5th Nov. 1854 (Medal
with four Clasps, ECB., Commander of the Legion of Honor, Commander ist Class Military Order of Savoy, and
Class of the Medjidie, and TurkishMedal).
'" General England served the expedition to the Weser in 1803-6; to the Cape of Good Hope and South
America in 1806-7; campaign of 1813 in the Peninsula, including the battle of Vittoria and siege of San Sebastian,
for which he has received the Silver War Medal with two Clasps.
15 Six John St. George served in the Crimean campaign from March 1855, and commanded the siege train at the
fall of Sebastopol(Medal with Clasp,C5.,Officer of the Legion of Honor, 4th Class of the Mediidie,and Turkish Medal).
1^ Sir Edward Warde served in the Crimean campaign of 1835, in command of the siege train before Sebastopol,
and was present at the bombardicents of gth April and 6th and 17th June (Medal with Clasp, C'.B., Officer of the
Legion of Honor, 4th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal)..
1' Sir CoUingwood Dickson served on the staff of Lord Raglan during the Eastern campaign of 1S54-53, and was
present at the affairs of Bulganac and M'Kenzie's Farm, the battles of Alma and Inkerman, capture of Balaklava,
expedition to Kertch, and siege of Sebastopol (wounded 4th Feb. 1855); commanded the right siege train, and was
present at the bombardments of 17th October, 9th April, and 17th June (Medal with four Clasps, CB., Aide de Camp
to the Queen and Colonel, Victoria Cross, Officer of the Legion of Honor, 2nd Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish
Medal). He is also a Knight of Charles the Third, ist Class St. Fernando, and Knight of Isabella the Catholic.
I'* Sir David Edward Wood commanded the Boyal Artillery on the Eastern frontier of the Cape of Good Hope
during the insurrection of the Boers and Kaffirs in 1842-43 (Medal). Served in the Crimean campaign of 1834-55,
and commanded the Royal Artillery of the 4th Division at the battles of Balaklava and Inkerman, repulse of the
sortie on the 26th Oct. 1854, and during the siege of Sebastopol, until the final capture of the town; was afterwards
removed to the command of tlie Royal Horse Artillery, which he commanded until the close of the war in June 185&
(Medal with three Clasps, CB., Officer of the Legion of Honor, 4th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal). Com¬
manded the Royal Horse Artillerj' in India from Oct. 1837 to Feb. 1859 ; commanded the Royal Horse Artillery in
the affiiir of Pandora, where they acted as Cavalry and charged and defeated a large force of rebel Sepoys; com¬
manded as Brigadier the Field Artillery in the operations previous to and during the siege of Lucknow, and at the
conclusion of the siege and final capture of the town commanded the whole of the Artillery until the Army was
broken up. Subsequently to the capture of Lucknow was appointed to command the Station and Fort of Allahabad,
and carried on the successful operations against the rebels in that part of the country—four times mentioned in
despatches (Medal with Clasp, KCB.).
" Sir James William Fitzmayer served the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, including the affairs of Bulganac and
M'Kenzie's Farm, battles of Alma and Inkerman, aiege and fall of Sebastopol, and repulse of the sortie on the 26th
October 1854 ; was complimented on parade by Sir De Lacy Evans for his manner in bringing the Artdlery at the
Alma under "the hottest fire," and was again thanked by Sir De Lacy, and twice mentioned in his despatch on the
repulse of the sortie on 26th October 1834 (Medal with three Clasps, C.S., Officer of the Legion of Honor, 4th Class of
the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
2" General Askwith while attached to the British Embassy in Spain in 1838-39, was attached to the Spanish Army
dsiriug the Carlist War. The decorations of ist Class St. Fernando, Commander Isabella the Catholic, and Knight
of Charles the Third have been conferred on him.
" General PhiUpotts served in the Crimean campaign from June to September 1853, including the siege and
fall of Sebastopol (Medal with Clasp, 5th Class of the Modjidie, and Turkish Medal). Has also received the Syrian
Medal of 1841.
="* Sir John Miller Adye served the Eastern campaign of 1854-33 as Assist.Adjt.General of Ro3-al Artillery, and
was present at the affairs of Bulganac and M'Kenzie's Farm, the battles of Alma, Balaklava, and Inkerman, capture
of Balaklava Castle, siege and fall of Sebastopol (Medal with four Clasps, CB., Commander of the Legion of Honor,
4th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal). Served in India in 1857-58 as Assist. Adjt. General of Royal Artillery,
and was present at the action of PandooNuddee 26th Nov., operations before Cawnpore under General Windham,
27th 2Sth and 29th Nov., battle of Cawnpore and defeat of the Gwalior Contingent 6th Dec. 1857 (three times men¬
tioned in despatches, Medal). Employed on special service with the expedition of 1S63 against the tribes on the
North-West Frontier of India, and was present at the storm of Laloo, captur eof Umbeylah, and destruction of
Mulkah (Modal with Clasp). Served as Chief of the Staff in the Egyptian war of 1882, with the rank of General,
and was present at the engagements of Tel-el-Mahuta, Kassasin (9th Sept.), and in the battle of Tel-el-Kebir
(twice meutioued in despatches, received the thanks of both Houses of Parliament, GCB., Medal with Clasp,
Grand Cross of the Medjidie, and Khedive's Star).
^^ General Price commaaded the Artillery of the Rajpootana Field Force under General Roberts at the capture
of Kotah on 30th March 1858, and at the action of Saugor, and defeat of the rebels on the right bank of the Bunnas
(mentioned in despatches, CB., and Medal).
■" Sir Charles D'Aguilar served the Crimean campaign from September 1854 to March 1855, including the battle
of Inkerman (horse shot) and siege of Sebastopol, in the Trenches with the siege train, and at the bombardment of
17th October (Medal with two Clasps, CB.. 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal). Served the Indian cam¬
paign of 1857-58, and commanded the Artillery of General Franks' Force at the action of Seoundra, also commanded
the Royal Horse Artillery at the siege and capture of Lucknow (three times mentioned in despatches. Brevet of
Colonel, Medal v/ith Clasp).
3* L'eut.Goneral John Turner was present at the capture of Port Natal on the 26th Jane 1842. Served also the Eastern
campaign of 1854 and up to April 1855, including the affair at M'Kenzie's Farm, the battles of Alma and Inkerman,
siege of Sebastopol, and repulse of the sortie on the 26th October 1854 (Medal with three Clasps, CB., E'.night of the
Legion of Honor, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal). Received the Brevet of Lt.Colonel for distin¬
guished service at the battle of Alma in crossing the river with two guns, ascending the Heights and enfilading the
Russian Columns. Commanded a Troop of Royal Horse Artillery in India in 1858-59.
" Major General Williams commanded the Royal Artillery in New Zealand in 1864-66 during the Waikato, Tauranga
and \Vauganui campaigns, and was present at Rangiawhia, Haerini, Gate Pah, Nukumaru, and seiveral minor
affairs (twice mentioned in despatches, CB., and Medal).
*" Major General Smyth and Colonel Council served in the Crimean campaign from June 1855, including the
siege and fall of Sebastopol (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal).
♦* Lt.Colouels Richardson and Wardell were present with three Batteries of Royal Artillery andei Colonel M'Crea
in the revolution (vhioh upset the Emperor Fausti in Hayti in Jan. 1859; landed and prcjtected the Kurojieans at
Port an Prince, and carried off the Emperor his family and ministers; received the thanks of the English and
French Governments.
" Major General Pipon served in the Eastern campaign of i854-55,including the affairs of Bulganac and M'Kenzie'a
Farm, the battles of Alma and Balaklava, siege and fall of Sebastopol (Medal with three Clasps, Brevet of Major,-
Sardinian and Turkish Medals, and 3th Class of the Medjidie).
" Sir Edward Hamley served the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, including the affairs of Bulganac and M'Kenzie's
Farm, the battles of Alma (horse shot), Balaklava, and Inkerman (horse killed), the siege and fall of Sebastopol,
and repulse of the sortie on the 26th October 1854 (mentioned in despatches. Medal with four Clasps, Brevets
of Major and Lt.Colonel, Knight of the Legion of Honor, Sardinian and Turkish Medals, and 2nd Class of the
Medjidie, and CB.). Sir Edward Hamley is the author of "The Operations of War," a work that may confidently be
characterized as one of the most invaluable modern military books extant—"there exists nothing to compare
with it in the English language for enlightened, scientific, and sober teaching in the general art of war : " vide
The Time) of ist Nov. 1869. Served in the Egyptian war of 1882 in command of the 2nd Division, and was present
at the battle of Tel-el-Kebir (received the thanks of both Houses of Parliament, twice mentioned in despatches,
KCB., Medal with Clasp, 2nd Class of the Osmanieh, and Khedive's Star).
" Major General Field served in the Eastern campaign of 1854-55 as D. A.Q.M.Gen. to the Royal Artillery, and was
present at the siege and fall of Sebastopol, and with the expedition to Kertch (Brevet of Major, Medal with Clasp,
Knight of the Legion of Honor, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
