13" Lord Methuen served in the second phase of the Ashanti war from the 17th Dee. 1S74, and was present at
the battle of Amoaful (Medal with Clasp). Served in the Egyptian war of 1882 as Assistant Adjutant and Quarter
Master General and Commandant at Head Quarters, and was present at the engagements of Tel-el-Mahuta and
Kassasin (9th Sept.), and in the battle of Tel-el-Kebir (mentioned in despatches, CB., Medal with Clasp, 3rd
Class of the Osmanieh, and Khedive's Star). Served with the Bechuanaland Expedition under Sir Charles
Warren in 1884-85 in command of Methuen's Horse (mentioned in despatches, CM6.).
^=^ Major General W. H. Ralston served with the 70th Regiment in the New Zealand war of 1863-65, and was
present at Katikara and Eangiavrhia, and commanded the Expedition lauded at White Cliffs (received the thanks
of the Major General Commanding, Medal). Served with the 70th Regiment in the Afghan war in 1878-79 (men¬
tioned in despatches, Medal). Served in the Soudan campaign in 1885 (mentioned in despatches, CB., and Medal
with Clasp).
"* Major General John Fryer commanded the Carabiniers throughout the Afghan war of 1879-80. On the istb
January 1880, in command of a force of Royal Horse Artillery and Cavalry, he repulsed with heavy loss a large
body of Mohmunds at Ali Boghan. Commanded the Cavalry in the expeditions under Lt.General Bright to the
Lughman Valley and against the Wuzeeree Khugianis. On the sthjuly 1880, he commanded a force of Carabiniers
and 4th Bengal Cavalry at the attack and destruction of the Ghilzai villages of Nargozi, Arab Kheyl, and Jokan
(CB., Medal).
'" Major General O. H. A. NicoUs served in the Crimean campaign of 1854 till October of that year. Served
also the campaign of 1855 from September, including the siege and fall of Sebastopol (Medal with Clasp, and
Turkish Medal). "Was in command of the Royal Artillery throughout the operations in Perak in 1875-77 under
Major General the Hon. Sir F. Colborne, including the advance on and capture of Kinta in December 1875 (Brevet
of Lt.Colonel, Medal with Clasp).
'" Major General C. B. Knowles served with the 77th Regiment in the Crimea from the i tth July 1855, including
the siege and fall of Sebastopol, and was wounded at the assault of the Redan on the 8th September (Medal witn
Clasp, and Turkish Medal). Commanded the 67th Regiment throughout the Afghan war of 1B78-80, and was
present in the engagements at Charasiab on 6th October 1879 (mentioned in despatches) and in the operations
around Cabul in December 1879, including the engagement at the Asmai Heights on 14th December—mentioned
in despatches (CB., Medal with two Clasps).
^^ Major General W. C. Justice served with the 75th Regiment during the Indian campaign of 1857, and was
present at the siege of Delhi from 23rd Jime (in command oitheLight Company from 13th Sept.), storm and capture
of the city (Medal with Clasp).
1" Major General A. H. Utterson served wtth the 17th Regiment in the Crimea from the nth July 1S55 including
the siege and fall of Sebastopol, and assault of the Redan on the Sth September; was also at the bombardment and
surrender of Kinbourn (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal). Served with the 17th Regiment in the Afghan war
ill 1878-79, and was present at the capture of Ali Musjid and in the expeditions into the Bazar Valley, including
the engagement at Deh Sarak (mentioned in despatches. Medal with Clasp).
"■* Major General J. N. Crealock served with the 95th Regiment in the Indian mutiny campaign in 1858, including
the siege and capture of Kotah, battle of Kotake Serai (wounded), and general action resulting in the capture of
Gwalior, siege and capture of Pourie, and surprise of the rebel camp of Kunrye (Medal with Clasp, and twice
mentioned in despatches). Served throughout the Kafir war of 1878 and the Zulu war of 1879 as Assistant
Military Secretary to Lt.General Lord Chelmsford commanding the forces, and was present at the action of
Gingindhlovu (slightly wounded) and relief of Ekowe, and in the engagement at Ulundi (several times mentioned
indespatche3,Brevetof Lt.Colonel, CB., Medal with Clasp). Served with the sndBattalion Derbyshire Regiment
in the Egyptian warof 1882, and commanded the troops in Alexandria from the 25th August to the 14th September
(Medal, and Khedive's Star).
1** Major General E. Hopton served with the 88th Regiment in the Crimea from 17th June 1855, including the
siege and fall of Sebastopol, and attacks of the Redan on the 18th June and 8th September—severely wounded
(Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal). Served also in suppression of the Indian mutiny in 1857-58, including
the siege of Lucknow in March 1858, and siege of Calpee (Medal with Clasp for Central India). Served with the
SSth Regiment throughout the Kafir war of 1877-78 (mentioned in despatches. Brevet of Lt.Colonel), and through¬
out the Zulu war of 1S70, during the first portion of the latter as Director of Transport (Medal with Clasp).
"j? Sir H. J. Alderson served throitghout the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, including the battles of Alma and
Inkerman, siege and fall of Sebastopol, in the Trenches with the siege train, and bombardments of 17th October,
gth April, and 6th and 17th June (Medal with three Clasps, Knight of the Legion of Honor, and Turkish Medal).
'™ Sir G. B. Wolseley served with the 84th Regiment during the latter part of the Indian mutiny, and was engaged
in aU the mmor affairs in the Shahabad district under Sir John Douglas (Medal). Served in the Afghan war in
1878-79 as Assistant Adjutant General with the Candahar Field Force (Brevet of Lt.Colonel, Medal). Served in the
Egyptian war of 1882 as Assistant Adjutant General with the Head Quarters of the Army, and was present at the
battle of Tel-el-Kebir (mentioned in despatches. Aide de Camp to the Queen, Medal with Clasp, 3rd Class of the
Medjidie, and Khedive's Star); also servedwith the Nile Expeditionin 1884-85 as Assistant Adjutant General at Head
Quarters, and afterwards commanded at Abu Gus(mentioned in despatches, CB., and Clasp). Served with the Burmese
Expedition in 1887 and 1889-91 in command of a Brigade (mentioned in despatches, KCB., and Medal with Clasp).
Commanded the troops during the operations in the Wimtho Territory in 1891 (received the thanks of the
Government of India).

'" Sir William Butler served in the 69th Regiment with the Field Force which repelled an incursion of
Fenians into Canada in May 1870. Served throughout the Ashanti war from the 23rd October 1873, and was employed
as Special Commissioner to the Western Akims (mentioned in despatches, substantive rank o( Major, CB., Medal
with Clasp). Served in the Egyptian war of 1882 as Assistant Adjutant and Quarter Master General on the Head
Quarters Staff, and was present at the engagements of El Magfar, Tel-el-Mahuta, and Kassasiu (9th September),
and in the battle of Tel-el-Kebir (mentioned in despatches, Aide de Camp to the Queen, Medal with Clasp, 3rd
Class of the Medjidie, and Khedive's Star). Served with the Nile Expedition in i884-85as Assistant Adjutant and
Quarter Master General, and was present at the action at Kirbekan (twice mentioned in despatches, two Clasps).
Served with the Egyptian Frontier Field Force in 1883-86 in command of a Brigade and was present in the engage¬
ment at Giniss (mentioned in despatches, KCB.).

Oct. to Dec. 1855, including the battle of the Tchernaya, and siege of Sebastopol (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish

1'* Major General Wilsone Black served with the 42nd Highlanders in the Crimea from 14th June 1855, including the
Bioge and fall of Sebastopol (Medal with Clasp and Turkish Medal). Served in the Kafir war in 1878, including the
engagement at Taba-ka-Udoda. Served also in the Zulu war of 1879, and commanded the party which recovered
the lost colours of the 24th Foot (mentioned in despatches, CB., Medal with Clasp).

with Clasp). Served with the Candahar Column in the Afghan warof 1878-80, including the advance to Khelat-i-
Ghilzai; commanded a squadron of the 15th Hussars and a troop of the 1st Punjaub Cavalry in engagements
with the Afghan cavalry at Takht-i-Pul on the 4th January 1879 (slightly wounded, mentioned in despatches.
Medal). Servedwith the ThuU-Chotiali Field Force under Brigadier General Biddulph, and accompanied Major
