'^ Sir John Boss served with the 'Rifle Brigade in the Eastern campaign, including the battles of Alma ana
Inkerman, and siege of Sebastopol, until February 1855 (Medal with three Clasps, Brevet of Major, 5th Class of the
Medjidie, and Turkish Medal). Served also in the Indian campaign of 1857-58, including the action of Cawnpore,
siege and capture of Lucknow. Commanded the Camel Corps at the capture of Calpee and during the subsequent
campaign m Central India (mentioned in despatches, Brevet of Lt.Colonel, CB., Medal with two Clasps). Served
with the Rifle Brigade in the North West Frontier of India campaigns of 1863-64 (Medal with Clasp). Commanded
the Bengal troops during the operations in the Malay Peninsula in 1S75-76 mentioned in General Orders of the
Government of India, Medal with Clasp). Commanded the Indian Expeditionary Force which was sent to the
Mediterranean in 1S78. Served in the Afghan war of 1878-80 ; commanded the 2nd Division Cabul Field Forca
which defeated the enemy at Shekabad (received the thanks of the Governor General in Council and of the Com¬
mander in Chief in India); accompanied Sir Frederick Roberts in the march to Candahar in command of the.
Infantry Division and as 2nd in command, and was present at the battle of Candahar (mentioned in despatches,
received the thanks of both Houses of Parliament, KCB., Medal with Clasp, and Bronze Decoration).
29 Sir Edward Bulwer served the Bastei-n campaign of 1854 with the 23rd Fusiliers, including the battle 01
Alma and siegeof Sebastopol (Medal with two Clasps, and Turkish Medal). Served in the Indian mutiny of i857-59»
including the siege and capture of Lucknow, and operations across the Goomtee under Outram. Conmianded a
Column of troops with the Left AVing of the 23rd Fusiliers in the Bueswan-a district of Oude, including the capture
of the Fort of Selimpore, and two other successful engagements at Julrowlee and Poorwah, commanded Left Wing
of the 23rd at the defeat of Benee Madho by Lord Clyde at Buxarghat (Brevet of Lt.Colonel, CB., Medal with two
Clasps, and mentioned in despatches).
" General Hon. W. H. A. Feilding accompanied the French Head Quarters as Military Attache during the
Franco-German war of 1870-71 (Chevalier of the Legion of Honour).
*^ General J. H. Dunne served with the 21st Fusiliers the Eastern campaign of 1854, including the battles
of Alma, Balaklava, and Inkerman, siege of Sebastopol, and attack on the Redan on the i8th June (Medal with
four Clasps, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal). Served with the ggth Regiment in the campaign of
i860 in the north of China, including the action of Sinho, taking of Tangku, assault and capture of the inner North.
Taku Fort, actions of the Chang-kin-wan and Palialchow, and surrender ofPekin (Medal with two Clasps).
•*' General T. C. Lyons served in the 20th Regiment in the Indian campaign of 1857-58, and com¬
manded the selected marksmen of the Regiment in the actions of Chanda, Umeerpore, Sultanpore, and Fort of
Dhowraha, whence he assisted in bringing away two guns under a heavy fire; was present at the siege and
capture of Lncknow, the subsequent operations in Oude and aftair of Mohan, and commanded four Companies
at Morar Mow and Bcerah, Fort of Simree, and action of Buxar Ghat; served as Brigade Major to the 2nd
Brigade Oude Force, and was present at the capture of Fort Oohmrea (three times mentioned in despatches, Medal
with Clasp, and Brevet of Major).
*5 Sir Reginald Gipps served the Eastern campaign of 1854, including the battles of Alma (bayonet wound of
hand), Balaklava, and Inkerman (severely wounded, shot through neck), siege of Sebastopol and sortie on the
26th Oct. (Medal with four Clasps, Brevet of Major, Knight of the Legion of Honor, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and
Turkish Medal.
'0 General H. Rowlands served the Eastern campaign of 1854-55 with the 41st Regiment, including thes
battles of Alma and Inkerman (severely wounded), siege and fall of Sebastopol, sortie of 26th October,
attack of the Quarries on 7th June and twice on the Rifle-pits, attacks of the Redan on the i8th June and 8th
September—wounded (Medal with three Clasps, Victoria Cross, Brevet of Major, Knight of the Legion of Honor,
5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal) : received the Y^Z " for rescuing Colonel Haly, of the 47th Regi¬
ment, from Russian soldiers. Colonel Haly having been wounded and surrounded by them, and for gallant exertions
in holding the ground occupied by his advanced piquet against the enemy, at the commencement of the battle of
Inkerman, 5lh November 1854." Served in the Kafir waV in 1877-79 oii special service at Lunebcrg, and com¬
manded the troops in the engagement at Tolako Mountain (mentioned in despatches, Medal with Clasp).
^' Sir Henry Evelyn Wood entered the Navy in April 1852, and served in the Naval Brigade as Aide de Camp to
Captain Peel from istOct. 1854 to 18 June 1855, when he was severely wounded carrying up scaling-ladders to th»
Eedan: mentioned in Lord Raglan's despatches (Medal with two'Clasps, Knight of the Legion of Honor, 5th
Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal). Served in the Indian campaign of 1858 as Brigade Major in Somerset's
Brigade, and was present at Rajghur, Sindwaho (mentioned in General Michel's despatch), Kharee,and Baroda
—mentioned in despatches (Medal). Employed in 1859-60, while commanding ist Regiment Beatson's Horse,
in hunting down rebels in the Seronge Jungles; thanked by the Government of India for an attack made on a
band in December 1859, and gazettedto the Victoria Cross "for having on the 19th October 1858, during action at
Sindwaho, when in command of a Troop of the 3rd Light Cavalry, attacked with much gallantry, almost single-
handed, a body of rebels who had made a stand, whom he routed. Also for having subsequently, near Sindhora,
gallantly advanced with a dufl'adar and sowar of Beatson's Horse, and rescued from a band of robbers a Pqtail,
Chemmura Singh, whom they had captured and carried off to the Jungles, where they intended to hang him."'

pression of Iler Majesty's approbation). Commanded the troops at the head of the road following the enemy
from Msnsu to the river Prah prior to the arrival of the European troops, including the reconnaissance ia
force of the 27th November. Commanded the Right Column at the battle of Amoaful (slightly wounded) ;
and commanded the Head Quarters of his regiment at the battle of Ordahsu and capture of Coomassi«»
(several times mentioned in despatches. Brevet of Colonel, CB., Medal with Clasp). Served throughout the
Gaika war of 1878 in command of a column (several times mentioned in despatches). Served throughout
the Zulu war of 1879 in command of No. 4 Column. As Political Agent raised a contingent of 1,000 friendly
Zulus, known as "Wood's Irregulars." Two days after the British reverse at Isanhlwana he surprised and'
defeated a force of several thousands of the enemy and then maintained an advanced position in the enemy's
country for which be was specially commended by the High Commissioner. Nominated KCB. Defeated the
Zulus in the action of Kambula on the 29th March. Appointed Brigadier General in April. Led the advance on
TJlundi with a flying column, and was present in the engagement there on the 4th July (mentioned in despatches.
Medal with Clasp). Served in the Boer war of 1881 with the rank of Major General, and on the death of Sir George
Colley, as Governor of Natal and Commander-in-Chief of the British forces (GCMG.). Served in the Egyptian,
•war of 1E82 in command of the 4th Brigade in the operations near Alexandria, including the surrender of Kafr
Dowarand Damietta (mentioned in despatches, received the thanks of both Houses of Parliament, Medal, 2nd
