was present in the actions of Rangiriri and Rangiawhia (mentioned iu despatches, Victoria Cross, Medal):
together with Lieut. A. F. Pickard (since deceased), he was awarded the >JC " for gallant conduct during the-
assault on the enemy's position at Rangiriri iu New Zealand, on the 20th November 1863, in e.xposing their lives
to imminent danger, in crossing the entrance of the Maori keep, at a point upon which the enemy had concen¬
trated their iire, with a view to render assistance to the wounded, and more especially to the late Captain Mercer,
oftheRoj'al Artillery. Lieutenant Pickard, it is stated, crossed and recrossed the parapet, to procure water I'or
the wounded, when none of the men could be induced to perform this service, the space over which ho traversedi
being exposed to a crossfire; aad testimony is borne to the calmness displayed by him and Assistant Siirgcon>
Temple under the trying circumstances in which they were placed."
1*^ Deputy Surgeon General H. R. L. Veale served in the Indian Mutiny camjiaign, and was present at the relief
of Lucknow by Lord Clyde—severely wounded (Medal with Clasp). Served in the Egyptian war of 188.2 {Medal^
and Khedive's Star).
H6 Brigade Surgeon R. Waters served in the Gambia during the outbreak of cholera in 1869. Was mentioned in
despatches by the Governor, and for his services during the ejiidemic received the thanks of the Colonial Goveim-
ment and of the Secretary of Stale for the Colonies, and was promoted Staff Surgeon, Surgeon Major, " in con¬
sideration of his highly meritorious service." Served in the Ashanti war of 1873-74 "-s personal Assistant to the
X'rincipal Medical Officer, and was present at the battle of Amoaful, capture .and destruction of Becquah, l>attlo
of Ordahsu a.nd capture of Coomassie (mentioned in despatches. Medal with Clasp). Served with the Nile Kx-
pcdition in 1884-85 as Sanitary Officer, and was for some time in charge of Field Hospitals at Korti and Abu
Fatmeh, and was also for some time officiating Principal Medical Officer on the Lines of Communication (men¬
tioned in despatches, promoted Brigade Surgeon, Medal with Clasp, and Khedive's Star).

Lucknow by Lord Clyde, and occupation of the Alumbagh from 25th October to 18th November, aud defeat of the
Gwalior Contingent at Cawnpore on 6th December 1857 (Medal with Clasp, and a year's service).
