' Sir John Jarvis Bisset served
through the Kaffir war of 1833-36, as
a volilnteer, and ais Ensign and Lieu¬
tenant in a Battalion of Native In¬
fantry (Modal). Ho was Field Adjutant
to a division of troops proceeding to
Colesborg in Dec.1842 to suppress n,
rebellion of the Boors. He served
through the Kailir war of 1846-47, at
the commenceiiient of which he was
appointed Deputy Assist. Qr.Mr. Gen.
Was present at the battle of tho
Gwanga. and all the minor affairs
ivith theKafru's.and was twice slightly
wounded. He was repeatedly thankeil
in general orders by successive Gene¬
ral Officers, and linally received tbo
Brevet of Major for his servicoi^
during the campaign. At the close o;
the war he was appointed Brigade
Major of British Katl'raria. On tho
breaking out of the war in 1850 he
was severolj- wounded in the first en¬
gagement with the enemy at the
Bootnah Pass in the Amatola Moun¬
tains (Brevet of Lt.Colonel, Medal).
Was also present in the operations
subsequent to June 1852.
