1866. Surveyed the Waikato River under circumstances of ereat difficulty and danger, and piloted up it the K"^?"
boats Ann and Fionrer. AVas present at nearly the whole of tlie engageuients, and was repeatedly mentioned in
despatches—mentioned as being "always conspicuous for energy and daring" (Brevets of Major and Lt.Colonel,
and Medal}. Served as Chief of the Staflf of the Aslianti Expedition of 1873-74, and was present at the oattle ot
Amoaful, battle of Ordahsu and capture of Coomassie, including the minor eng:!.gements on the road. Mentioned
in despatches by Sir Garnet Wolseley in the following terms:—" Colonel Greaves assumed the duties of Chief ot
the Staff on the 17th December. His great knowledge of the army, his experience as a Staff Officer, the zeal and
ability he brings to bear upon his work mark him out as eminently qualitied for the post he occupied. He has
rendered the most valuable assistance " (Medal with Clasp, and CB). Served in the Souilan campaign in 1885 as
Chief of the Staff to Sir Gerald Graham (mentioned in despatches, KCB., and Medal with Clasp).
" Sir James C. Dormer served in the Crimea from 30th June 1855 as Adjutant to 13th Light Infantry and was
present at the siege and fall of Sebastopol, and battle of the Tchernaya (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal;.
Also served in the iiidian mutiny, including the relief of Azimghur and campaign in Gorruckpore in 105S
(mentioned in despatches); was afterwards appointed Aide do Camp to Lord Cl.yde, and present at the actions
during the Oude and Trans-Gogra campaign of 1858 (mentioned in despatches. Medal, and Brevet of Major). Pro¬
ceeded to China in i860 as Assistant Adjutant General to the Expeditionary Force, and was present throughout the
operations of that campaign, including the capture of the Taku Forts, advance on and entry into Pekin (promoted
to an Unattached Majority, Medal with two Clasps). Served throughout the Egyptian war of 1182 as Deputy
Adjutant General on the Head Quarters Staff, and w.as present at the reconnaissance m force from Alexandria (5th
August), the engagements ofTel-el-Mahuta and Kassasin (9th September), and in the battle of Tol-el-Kebir (twice
nier.tioned in despatches, nromoted Jlajor General for distinguished service in the field. Medal with Clasp,
:?nd Class of tiio Medjidie, a'nd Khedive's Star). Served with the Nile Expedition in 1885 in command of a Brigade
at Tani and niterwards of the Nile Field Force (Clasi)).
'' Sir Charios Knight Pearson served as Adjutant of the 313! Regiment in the Crimea from 3rd Sept. 1855
including the siege and fall of Stbastopol and attack of the 8th Sept. (.Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal).
Served in the Zulu war of 1S70 in command of No. i Column, a force of all arms, which invaded Zululand b.y the
passage of the Lower Tugela. On the 22nd Jinnary he defeated in the action of Inyezaiio a Zulu force which in
superior numbers had taken up position to overwhelm him at a formidable pass called Majia's Hill. He then
advanced and formed the fortified post of Ekowe and held it while invested by the enemy for two months, after
which the place was relieved by Lord Chelmsford (KCMG., Medal with Clasp).
«• Lieoit.General John Davis served with the 33th Regiment in the Shahabad district during the Indian
Mutiny campaign in 1838-59 (Medal). Served in the Soudan Expedition under Sir Gerald Graham in 1884 in
command of tlie and Infantry Brigade, and was present in the engagements at El Teb and Temai (several times
mentioned in despatches, CB., Medal with Clasp, and Khedive's Star). Served in the Soudan campaign in 1885
(Clasp).
^^ Sir Redvers Henry Buller served with the 2nd Battalion 60th Rifles throughout the campaign of i36o in China
(Medal with two Clasps). Served with the ist Battalion on the Red River expedition of 1870. Accompanied Sir
Garnet Wolseley to the Gold Coast in September 1873, and served as D. A. Adjutant and Qua,rter Master General
and Head of the Intelligence Department throughout the Ashanti war of 1873-74, including the action of Essa-
man, battle of Amoaful, advanced guard engagement at Jarbinbah, battle of Ordahsu (slightly wounded) and
capture of Coomassie (several times mentioned in despatches. Brevet of Major, CB., Medal with Clasp). Served
in the Kafir war of 1878-79, and commanded the Frontier Light Horse in the engagement at Taba ka Udoda and
in the operations at Molyneux Path and against Manyanyoba's stronghold (several times mentioned in despatches).
Served throughout the Zulu war of 1879, and commanded the cavalry in the engagements at Zlobane Mountain
and Kambula; conducted the reconnaissance before Ulundi, and was present in the engagement at Ulundi
(several times mentioned in despatches, ihauked in General Orders, Brevet of Lt.Colonel, Aide de Camp to the
Queen, Victoria Cross, CMG., Medal with Clasp) : received the F€ "for his gallant conduct at the retreat at
Inhlobana, on the 28th March 1879, in having assisted, whilst horiy pursued by Zulus, in rescuing Captain C. D'Arcy,
of the Frontier Light Horse, who was retiring on foot, and carrying him on his horse until he overtook the rear guard.
Also forhavingonthe same date, and under the same circumstances, conveyed Lieutenant C. Everitt,of the Frontier
Light Horse, whose horse had been killed under him, to a place of safety. Later on. Colonel Buller, in the same
manner, saved a trooper of the Frontier Light Horse, whose horse was comnletely exhausted, and who otherwise
would have been killed by the Zulus, who were within eighty yards of him." Served in the Boer war of 1881 as Cliie4'
of the Staff to Sir Evelyn Wood with the local rank of Major General. Served in the Egyptian war of 1S82 in
charge of the Intelligence Department, and was present in the action at Kassasin (gth Seplembei), and at tho
battle of Tel-el-Kebir (mentioned in despatches. KCMG., Medal with Clasp, 3rd Class of the Osmanieh, and
Khedive's Star). Served in the Soudan Exnedition under Sir Gerald Graham in 1884 in command of the ;st
infiintry Brigade and as second ia command of the expedition, and was present in the engagements at El Teb
and Temai (twice mentioned in despatches, pr'3moted Major General for distinguished service in the field, two
Clasps). Served in the Soudan campaign in 1884-85 as Chief of the Staff to Lord Wolseloy ; when Sir Herliort
Stewart was wounded and Colonel Burnaby had been killed, he took command of the Desert (;olumn and with¬
drew it from Gubat to Gakdul in face of the enemy, defeating them at Abu Klea Wells on the i6th and 17th
February (mentioned in despatches, KCB., and Clasp).

^■'Lieut.General H. J.Buchanan served the Eastern campaign of 1854-55 as Adjutant of the 47th Regiment,
including the battles of Alma and Inkerman, sortie of 26th Oct., siege and fall of Sehastopol—appointed Town
Major (Medal with throe Clasps, Sardinian and Turkish Medals, 5th Class of the Medjidie). Commanded a
Column of the Field Force under Brigadier General Ross against the Afreedees on the North West Frontier in
1877-78 (mentioned in despatches, CB.. Medal with Clasp).
"' Lieut. General P. Smith served in the Egyptian war of 1882 in command of the 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards,
and was present at the battle of Tel-el-Kebir (mentioned in despatches, CB., Medal with Clasp, 3rd Class of the

s'Sj.Sir Thomas Durand Baker served with the i8th Royal Irish in the Crimea from 30th Dec. 1854, including the
siege and fall of Sebastopol, mentioned in despatches, aiid awarded the Sardinian medal for "gallantry displayed
at the attack of the Cemetery and suburbs of Sebastopol on the icth June 1855 " (Medal with Clasp, Sardinian and
Turkish Medals). Served in India during the mutiny (in 1857) with the Field Force under Colonel Beatson.

General and subsequently as Assistant Adiutant General; was present at the action at Rangiawhia as Acting
Assistant Military Secretary to Lt.Goneral Sir Duncan Cameron (mentioned in despiitches, Brevet of Major) ; was
Staff Oflicer to the Force under Major General Carey at the attack and capture of Orakau—mentioned in despatches
for " gallantry and untiring energy and zeal evinced" (Medal). Accompanied Sir Garnet Wolseley to the Gold

Served in the Afghan war in 1879-80 in command of the 2nd Infantry Brigade from September 1879 to October
1880, and was in command of the troops in the engagement at Charasiab on the 6th Octolier 1S79 (mentioned in
despatches), in numerous operations around Cabul in December 1879, including the engagement on the Asmai
