where he brought his Regiment out of action; siege and storm of Jhansi, where he commanded his Regiment;
action of Koonch; commanded the left wing of his Regiment at the capture and storm of Lohari; in the
several actions on the banks of the Jumna from the 15th to the 23rd of May 1858, ending in the capture of Calpee,
actions of Morar, Kotah-ke-Serai, and capture of Gwalior; commanded a column under Sir Robert Napier;
engaged in several skirmishes with the rebel leaders Raja Maun Sing and Tantia Topee in Central India in 1859—
received the thanks of the Supreme Government for services rendered at Gwalior, several times mentioned in
despatches (Brevet of Major, Medal with Clasp). Served througliout the Abyssinian campaign of 1S67-68, and
commanded the entrenched position of Addegevat (mentioned in despatches, Medal).
-' Lieut.General F. Schneider served with the loth Bombay N.I. in the campaign in the Southern Mahratta
Country in 1844-45, and was present at the taking of the forts of Munohur and Munsuntosh.
''' Lieut.General R. H. Keatinge served as Political Officer with the Mhow Field Force and ist Brigade Central
India Field Force in i8,s7-58 at the siege of Dhar, three days' fighting near Mundesora, and at the siege of
Chandaree—dangerously wounded in three places (Brevet of Major, Victoria Cross, and Medal with Clasp) : received
the UC under the following circumstances:—" Dateof act of bravery, 17th March 1858.—For having rendered most
efficient aid at the assault of Chundairee, in voluntarily leading the column through the breach, which was pro¬
tected by a heavy cross fire. He was one of the foremost to enter, and was severely wounded in the breach. The
Column was saved from a serious loss that would probably have resulted but for Captain Keatinge's knowledge of
the small path leading across the ditch, which had been examined during the night by himself and a servant, who
declined, when required, to lead the Column, without his master. Having cleared the breach, he led into the fort,
where he was struck down by another dangerous wound. The Commander in Chief in India states that the success
at Chundairee was mainly owing to this Officer, whose gallantry, really brilliant, he considers was equalled by hi&
ability and devotion. Captain Keatinge was at the time a Political Officer with the 2nd Brigade of the Central India
Field Force." Commanded a force of irregular troops against Seeta Ram Holkar in Sathpoora Hills in October
1858 ; served with Brigadier Parke's Brigade in pursuit of Tantia Topee in November 1858 ; commanded irregular
troops against insurgents in Sathpoora Hills in 1859; commanded field detachments in Kattywar against rebel
Wagheers in 1865.
"^ Lieut.General C. T. Palin served with the Bombay Column in the Punjaub campaign of 1848- 49, and was
present at the siege and surrender of Mooltan, battle of Goojerat, pursuit and surrender of the Sikh army
(Medal with two Clasps).
'* Lieut.General C. 'J'hompson served in the campaign in the Southern Mahratta Country in 1844-45, and was
present at the storm and capture of Samunghur and Powunghur; dangerously wounded at the takingof the village
of Seevapore. Served with the Persian Expeditionary Force in 1856-57, and was present at the assault and
capture of Reshire and surrender ofBushire (Medal with Clasp). Served with the field force in the latter part of
1857 as Staff Officer to Brigadier General LeG. Jacob, at the assault and capture of Kolapoor from the rebels on
6th December 1857.
25 Major Generate. O. Maude served in the campaign in the Southern Mahratta Country in 1844-45, and was present
at the taking of the forts of Munohur and Munsuntosh. Served as Deputy Judge Advocate General Head Quarters,
Abyssinian expeditionary force under Lord Napier of Magdala throughout that campaign, present at the storm¬
ing and capture of Magdala (mentioned in despatches, and Brevet of Lt.Colonel).
'■'^ MajorGeneral J. A. M. Macdonald served as D.A.Q.M.General attached to Head Quarters Persian Expeditionary
Force in 1857 (Medal with Clasp). Served on the Staff of the Mai wa Field Force as D.A.Q.M.Generalin 1857, and
was present at the capture of Dhar and of Mundesore, and action at Surraria. Appointed A.Q.M.General to Sir Hugh
Rose, and served in that capacity throughout the Central India campaign, and was present at the siege and capture
of Rhatghur, action of Barodiea, relief of Saugor, capture of Gorrakotta, action at the Pass of Ixuddenpore, battle of
the Betwa (horse killed), siege and storm of Jhansi, actions of Koonch and Muttra, battle of Golowlee, and capture
of Calpee (Brevet of Major, Medal with Clasp). Served as A.Q.M. General with the Field Columns under Sir Hugh
Rose south of the Nerbudda in 1850.
-'' MajorGeueral W. G. Mainwaring served with the Bombay Column in the Punjaub campaign of 1848-49, and was
present at the siege and surrender of Mooltan, battle of Goojerat, pursuit and surrender of the Sikh army (Medal
with two Clasps). Served with the E.xpeditiouary Force in Persia in 1857 (Medal with Clasp). Served in the
Indian Mutiny campaign in 1857-58 (Medal). Served in the Afghan war in 1879-80, and took part in the defence of
Candahar (mentioned in despatches, Medal).
2' Major General H. II. James served throughout the Abyssinian campaign of 1867-68 from the first landing of
the Advance Brigade, and was present at the capture of Magdala; in command of the loth Regiment X.I. during
portion of the campaign (Brevet of Lt.Colonel, and Medal). Served in the Afghan war in 1879-80, and took part
in the march to Candahar with the force under Major General Phayre, when he commanded the ist Infantry Brigade
(mentioned in despatches, Medal).
2' Major General John Miles served in thelndian Mutiny campaign, and was present at the siege and capture of
Eatghur, action at Barodea, relief of Saugor, capture of Garrakota, forcing of the Muddeupore Pass, siege and
storm of .Thansi, and battle of the Betwa (Medal with Clasp).
^^ MajorGeneral Baumgartner served as Assistant Adjutant General of the Rajpootana Field Force, and was
present at the attack on the Fort of Arrahin September 1857, and at the siege of Kotahandits capture by assault on
the 30th March 1858 (Medal with Clasp).
^' MajorGeneral Nuttall served with the Persian Expeditionary Force in 1857, and was present at the bombardment
and capture of the forts of Mohumra, and pursuit of the Persian army (Medal with Clasp). Was in command
of detachments of Police in the Deccan and Concan against rebel Bheels, Peint rebels, &c., in 1857, 1858, and 1859,
including the relief of Peint and skirmish there; engagements at Wassiembiera (had two horses wounded under
him), Tursia Doonjur; skirmish and pursuit of the Bheels over the Chupurgaon hills, and engagement of Ambora
Durria (horse twice wounded; received on five occasions the commendation of Government). Served in the
Abyssinian campaign as 2nd in Command of the Land Transport Corps (mentioned in despatches. Brevet of
Lt.Colonel, and Medal). Served in the Afghan war of 1878-80, and was present in the engagement at Girishk in
command of a Cavalry Brigade, in the defence of Candahar iucluding the sortie of Deh Khojah, and at the battle
of Candahar (several times mentioned in despatches. Medal with Clasp).
'^^ Major General F. Roome served in Turkey during the war in the Crimea in 1855-56, with tho Osmanli
Irregular Cavalry (Bashi-Bazouks) as Captain in Turkey (Turkish Medal). Served in the Indian mutiny cam¬
paign, and was present at the storm and capture of the fortified village of Rowah, the siege and capture of the
rebel fort of Awah, siege storm and caiiture of Kotah in 1858; present during the operations of the brigade
under Brigadier Smith in Central India, at the battle of Kotah-ke-Serai, and at the storming of the various
heights and positions occupied by the enemy ; commanded his regiment in the general action of 19th June
1858, and attack and capture of the Lushkur and city of Gwalior; the siege and capture of Povvree, subsequent
pursuit of the rebels, action of Beejapoor, battle of Koondrye, with Brigadier Smith's Brigade, which surprised
and defeated a large force of rebels under command of Maun Sing; commanded the Bassoda Field Force at the
successful actions of Richia, Goonapoora, Goripoorie, and other minor skirmishes (nine times mentioned in des¬
patches. Medal with Clasp, and Brevet of Major). Served throughout the Abyssinian campaign in the Political
and Intelligence Department (mentioned in despatches. Medal;. Served in the Afghan war in 1879-80, and
took part in the march to Candahar with the force under Major General Phayre (Medal).
33 Major (ieneral VV. Bannerman served with the Bombay Column in the Punjaub campaign of 1848-49, including
the siege and surrender of Mooltan, battle of Goojerat, pursuit and surrender of the Sikh army (Modal with two
Clasps). Served with the field foi^-o which penetrated into the Busofzaie country north of Peshawur in December
1849 for the purpose of chastising tue Hill Tribe on the Swat border; present at the capture and destruction of the
villages of Sugoa, Pulai, Shurkannes, and Tjoomumda, in the Bagdurrah Valle.y (Medal with Clasp). Served with
the Persian Expeditionary B'orce in 1857 as Adjutant of the Light Battalion, present at the bombardment and
capture of the forts of Mohumra and pursuit of the Persian army (Clasp). Served as 2nd in Command of the
Detachment Southern Mahratta Horse in the pursuit through Central India, Meywar, Marwar, and Rajpootana of
the rebels under Tantia Topee, Rao Sahob, the Nawab of Banda, and Feroze Shah, and was present at the action at
Chota Oodeypoor (mentioned in despatches as having distinguished himself, horse severely wounded by sabre
cuts. Medal with Clasp). Served with the Horse Transport Service in the China Expeditionary Force in i860
under Sir Hope Grant, and was present at the landing at Pehtang, action of Sinho, capture of Tangkow, assault
and capture of the Taku Forts, and accompanied the advance of the army on Tien-Tsin and Pekin, including the
