1 Mr. Warneford served throughout the Afghan war of 1878-80 as Chaplain to the Southern Afghanistan Field
Force, theGhuznoe Field Force, and the 3rd Division of the Northern Afghanistan Field Force respectively, took part
in the advance on Cabul under Sir Donald Stewart, and was present in the engagements at Ahmed Kheyl and Urzoo
near Ghuznee (mentioned in despatches), and in the subsequent operations in theLogar Valley (Modal with Clasp).
' Mr. Adams was awarded the Victoria Cross for the following service:—" During the action at Killa Kazi on
the nth December 1879, some men of the gth Lancers having fallen, with tlieir horses, into a wide and deep
'nullah' or ditch, and the enemy being close upon them, the Rev. J. W. Adams rushed into the water (which
filled the ditch), dr.igged the horses from off the men upon whom they were lying, and extricated them, he being at
the time under a heavy fire, and up to his waist in water. At this time the Afghans were pressing on very rapidly,
ihe leading men getting within a few yards of Mr. Adams, who, having let go his horse in order to render mora
effectual assistance, had eventually to escape on foot."
» Mr. Speedy served in the Afghan war of 1841-42, and was present at the storming of the Khoord Cabul Pass,
the engagement at Tezeen, the capture of the JugduUuck Pass, the taking of Fort Mamoo Khail, and the iiivsst-
